Donkey Kong MAME desync - Side-by-side comparison

A while back, I played in a "no hammer" Donkey Kong challenge at donkeykongforum.net. However, I was unknowingly playing on the "no kill screen" romhack rather than the standard DK rom. The RNG is almost identical, and MAME was able to play back the input file using the regular Donkey Kong rom, at least up to a point. However, one barrel on 4-3 took a different trajectory, causing the different playbacks to desync.
I recorded this comparison to see if any other incidental game elements had diverged. On the left is the input file as played back by regular DK. On the right is playback using the "no hammer" romhack the game was originally recorded with. (I couldn't start both at the exact same time, so one is slightly ahead of the other.) The desync occurs at about 8:20. The game continues accepting inputs during the high score screen, but stops recognizing player inputs after initials are entered.

Real talk. How about the joystick? Can we tell if someone uses an eight way joystick?

I'm not sure if one could tell if the player is barrel-steering from a direct feed alone. But I'm told that holding diagonals auto-dismounts from ladders (but does not auto-climb a ladder). So you might be able to tell if the player is stepping off the ladder on the first available frame way too consistently. Also, if you have over-the-shoulder cam with audio, you can probably tell if the player is jamming too many odd directions during what should be a straight up ladder climb.
