Donkey Kong Country is one of the greatest video games of all time due to it's groundbreaking and phenomenal gameplay, graphics, and levels as it was unique and creative as it was something new and fresh in the platforming genre. It was decent. To this day I still play it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍😎💯👍

man not a single mention of the beautiful music?
I think I can honestly say that across the board, this game series is the most flawless in all my video game experience. The music is perfect and i cant and wont stop listening to it, the graphics are perfect, and even if they could be remade i want it to look 90’s perfect. It’s wonderful just the way it is. It has replay value, secrets, graphics, music, charm, good characters, slight but meaningful character differences, secret moves and animal buddies for extended variety of gameplay and move sets, awesome gimmicks and all of this across a three game series.
OMG a retrospective of EVERY Country Game?!?! I adore your channel already and can’t believe it took the algorithm sooo long to recommend it to me.

Here I am, two years after video release... It took too long for me to find this as well.
You are SUCH an underrated channel. Just subbed! This is my favorite game!
Very very nice video, cant wait for your DKC2 video!! Subbed!
I actually have never beaten DKC, and it was one of my first games I’ve ever played, on the Wii virtual console of course. No doubt a beautiful game which I even listen to the soundtrack of on its own, the mechanics and visuals are amazing I just haven’t ever sank the time into the actual game which is weird. Maybe I’ll beat it sometime soon, hopefully. Amazing video by the way, best channel.

Thanks! You should really play the game all the way through when you get the chance :)
A new retrospective is approaching! Love these games so much, really enjoyed this vid! I only recently played through the original games on the SNES switch online app, and they hold up super well
This is a very well made video on Donkey Kong Country. I really enjoyed it, and will check out your other Retrospectives/Reviews.
my favorite game in the dunking Kong series is donkey Kong country two and I love playing is Dixie and flying with her ponytails. Well, I suppose it's more like a glide, kinda like knuckles. However my favorite animal in that game is the spider. It especially makes crossing through the volcano levels easier because you can just make web platforms to jump across. I also thought the level was pretty cool where it had the lava that you could switch and turned into water and then swim through it quickly before it turned back into lava again.
Excuse me?! There is a giant animal token? Not one has ever told me that ever. Never seven seen any game play with that. Got to use that for my next stream
Great retrospective, love DK Country 🍌
Gotta love Nintendo game retrospectives. Good voice for narration!
This is such a good video! I can see the passion and love for this game put behind it! I’m always so excited to find someone else that this was their first introduction to gaming! Made a subscriber quick! And I can’t wait to see your channel grow! 🎉
To me Ori and the Blind Forest was the first game after DKC that felt like it finally pushed 2D platform graphics to where I imagined they would go as a kid in 1995… The Ori games capture that level of effort and detail that was so impressive when the Country series were first released
Hey man, you’ve got some very entertaining videos. Hope you keep it up and I’m excited to see your channel grow.
Yoooooooo new vid, let’s go!!! 10/10 content!
This was one of my favorite games on game boy as a kid. This game and super Mario world were my main games I played over and over for years
I began replaying the DKC series recently, which is why i found your channel. I wanted to hear someone else's opinions snd thoughts on it. With that said, DKC2 undeniably has better gameplay but i prefer the atmosphere of the first game created through its artstyle and soundtrack. It feels more "primal" so to say, and I enjoy the jungles, forests, temples, and caves over the darker adventue theme of the second.
It was either Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that was the first video game I ever played, but Donkey Kong Country was the first video game that made me fall in love with video games. Donkey Kong Country felt more real, more immersive, maybe the story wasn't all that complex, but there was enough from the instruction manual and the game itself that showed me that video games were the future of storytelling. I even wrote a Donkey Kong Country movie script a few years ago. So glad this game still gets talked about and celebrated all these years later.
I have lots of fond memories of playing this game with my Dad in the 90's. He'd always remind me to get all the bananas in that purple bonus room in Jungle Hijinks. I loved all the sound effects, how you collect bananas, the quirky characters, and of course the music ♡
I just found out about your channel and its pretty good, i'm suscribed!
Let's gooooo
I really enjoy your content, good work man
Great video man. I was 12 when DKC came out. I remember going to the mall at Sears just to play the kiosk that had it. I then saved my allowance and walked to the mall and bought it…such a great game. And it was long too…definitely didn’t finish over the weekend , like a lot of my favorite games back then
Somebody give this man an award. You kind sir need more credit for your commentary on this awesome masterpiece. Anybody who talks well about my favorite SNES game Donkey Kong Country is my friend. Well done ❤
Dkc1 & dkc2 are basically one big game. That’s how I like to look at it. If you look at it that way then it’s a much more epic experience. Dkc 3 was just a bonus. An encore and final farewell to the snes and a fitting one at that. Greatest games on snes.
DKC was the first game I ever played, as well. It was my childhood. We didn't have any consoles besides the SNES for a large portion of my childhood. I can still remember watching my older brother play the final boss level while I sat so still and held my breath, waiting to see what would happen. We cheered when we finally beat K. Rool. Great video!
I remember when I got DKC for Christmas that year, everyone in the house was drawn to my tv even if they didn’t even play games. 😂❤
I love one of the very first well hidden secrets in DKC one, the barrel at the beginning of the level that is actually off the screen and underneath the one that launches you into the cart on Mine Cart Carnage. Love that because it jumps you to the end where all you have to do is jump over an alligator and a cart in your home free. Most people wouldn't think to jump over that first barrel and then scoot over against the wall before they die to go into the hidden one. I am visually impaired, and I had particular trouble with the mine cart levels so finding a way to zip past it without getting stuck and just having to give up the game was really cool.
Nah, you nailed it. When I hear "Video Game" I think Subspace Emissary and THEN Donkey Kong Country
While I wouldn’t say DKC was the first video game I ever played it’s definitely one of them, along with super Mario world. I’m fortunate to still have my SNES, as well as my copies of SMW, and all 3 DKC games. And despite playing these games for 30 years I still love to do so and they bring a smile to my face, and are among the first examples to come to mind when I think of what makes a video game
Very good analysis. I have pretty much exactly the same experience as you, although I was 9 and not 5. The only point where I beg tp differ is the music - although I recognize the greatness of DKC2's OST, I personally always preferred the more atmospheric tracks from DKC. Cheers to you, sir!

There's tracks I like just as much as my favorites from DKC2. I'll never get tired of Life in the Mines. Both have amazing soundtracks!
Great video man! Snes dkc combo was my first brand new console, my Mum and I played endlessly😊 loved the Land series on GameBoy, my Dad got me those, never played the GBC/A versions
I played this game when it came out, I was 11 and I beat it then, you had to play till you got good.
I bought this on the drop day and stayed up all night beating it. Late to school the next day, obviously. Cheers
@12:34 "I have a hard time differentiating the generic grass levels from each other..." That's a big reason why I prefer SMB3 over SMW. I can remember many of the stages having their own identity as opposed to a good majority in SMW. I know that's off-topic from this video, but that comment caught my attention. Nice to see you tackle the DKC games! I look forward to what you have to say about the future games!

Yeah, it's definitely my least favorite thing about Mario World. However I still personally prefer it over SMB3, just a little. Both are great games though. Thanks for tuning in!
Great video dude. I also started my video game journey with Donkey Kong Country on a hand-me-down SNES. Except I did develop the anger issues 🤣 keep up the great work, I’ve been loving all the DKC retrospectives and watched this one last.
This one is a very nostalgic game and experience for me. I also want to say it was my very first video game.
I love this channel so much u will Hit 500k in no time ❤️🙏 Dont forget us when you r big and keep up this amazing work 😊

6:30 🥲 poor boy me and my lil GBC loving the heck out of this game, only way I could ever play it
This was the first game I ever played when I was growing up. A certified hood classic for sure.
Great video. I've always wanted to play these games, and I planned on doing so before I canceled my NSO subscription. But once Nintendo inevitably pulls me back into it, these'll be the first classic games I boot up. Unless I feel like playing Super Metroid again.

16:57 I love this review but holy crap this caught me off guard lmao
my stepbrother found the secret in Snow barrel blast by accident too. I couldn't even play that level because being visually impaired, the snow made it way too difficult to see. I could play the levels that had snow on the ground just fine but had a hard time with the levels where it was actually snowing.
I love this type of content make the vids as long as you want lol
I love Donkey Kong, especially DK 2 because I had the chance to finish it on Snes in 2 days. I remember that someone lent me the game and praised it very much. DK 2 was the first shock related to the graphics, I was really impressed. I couldn't believe that Snes has such graphics. At that time we were playing on PS one, it was fashionable, this was somewhere around the year 2000.
Still remember Christmas 94 where I got so excited about getting DCK, I accidentally tore the box in half. Thankfully, the game lived up to my expectations. Only got the 101% a few years ago in my thirties! That bloody secret room in the secret room in the secret room!
Gang-Plank Galleon does indeed give that vibe of the bad guy just grinning and dancing silly with a gleeful welcome... 'till starts taking a more serious face and cracking neck and stretching, assuming more intimidating fighting posture as the music starts shifting...
18:19 lol I'm literally eating these while watching this video
Donkey Kong Country was my introduction to video games.
man, DKC is literally the first thing that jumps into my mind whenever anybody says "videogame" or "soundtrack"

I swear the screen crunch was real on GBC. Never played the SNES version until it _finally_ came out on Wii U VC. That was the first time I beat it too, because on GBC I got stuck on many levels for like weeks and could never get past Platform Perils before I eventually lost the cartridge. Still a great game, but I think it's absolutely overshadowed by every DKC game that came after it.
Great video!

that's wild the first game you ever beat was dkc1. that's a hard game!
Your thumbnails are fucking perfect btw
How can this channel have only 1.86k subscribers?!
Back then Sonic the hedgehog 1 took me 1 whole year to finish and after the final fight i was just out of breath but still I was so happy that i finally beat Dr. Robotnik!😂❤🎉

I actually found that the final boss on sonic one was way too easy. I had a much harder time with Labyrinth and Scrap Brain zones.
Great stuff. I played the original back in the day, and did everything in the Returns games. I should really play 2 and 3 at some point. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is the best DKC game of the past few years, for anyone that's missed it.

I've really been wanting to try out that sidescrolling Yooka-Laylee game. Yet another of the several games in my backlog.
Enguarde at the beginning of Poison Pond is a godsend.
I grew up with this game too. Back in the day I never managed to make it past world 2 😅
I always thought it was quite hilarious how a huge ape that's way bigger than even big Mario can get killed in one hit when Mario can take two or three. That's funny.
No joke, the GBA lack of a proper sound chip is the biggest reason I struggle to go back and play those games… which is a shame since there are some bangers on that handheld. But Jesus everything sounds like it’s being put through a wood chipper.
Damn, DKC being the first game someone played in their life is kinda dope. In some ways, it’s the 16-bit equivalent to Super Mario Bros. And it may not seem like it now but back in the day, SMB was hard as balls. Actually beating that game was not easy for a 4-year-old me. DKC is tough but pretty fair. Same deal with SMB (though some of those spinning fire bars with pits on either side were kinda bs). Good retrospective by the way.
I still see modern DK as DK Jr grown up
DKC was one of my first games ever as well, although it was the SNES version for me. According to my brother, it was also the first game I ever beat, thanks to the Co-op mode lol. Yeah, it's one hell of a game, and the Soundtrack is incredible. I really hope you'll give DKC 3 GBA's OST some love in that video, I consider DKC 1 and 2 better on SNES, but 3 better on GBA, mostly for the Soundtrack. If you get the chance, listen to some remasters of DKC 3 GBA, they really show how well those pieces are composed behind the crappy GBA speakers.

I'll definitely check it out, thanks!
With the new Super Mario Bros movie being a phenomenal hit. I’m really excited for a potential Donkey King Spin-off movie . But just like the SMB movie the story needs to be more developed since the plot of DK trying to recover his Bananas might not be enough. Either way really excited.
Donkey Kong Lands are all great too!
Nostalgia means so much with these guys. I grew up playing DKC3, and it was my first SNES game, and my sister had DKC2. So I have a lot of good memories playing both of those games, and didn't play the original DKC until I was an adult, and I don't like it as much because the last 2 games did everything this one did, but MUCH better in my opinion. But, probably mostly because I have no nostalgic feelings about it.
My most hated map on DKC1 was vulture culture.... omg...that stage scarred me
I'm eager to see the next 2 DKC reviews, and I'm really certain PGReviews won't approve of DKC3 very highly, like lots of people do.

I'm actually looking forward to getting to DKC3. I've only played it once and I remember liking it more than I expected. But who knows, maybe my opinion will change.
No, DK in DKC is actually DK Junior's son and Cranky's grandson.
nice
This game is also MY first game, I have alot of nostalgia for it
I think you should play DKC3 GBA, new world and entirely new soundtrack made with the GBA sound chip in mind, and by Dave Wise. Once you play the GBA version you never go back ;p
I find it hard to believe that Dk Island is in the southwestern part of the DKC3 overworld map
you should absolutely play donkey kong land. it's the best of these games in my opinion. and it's not a port of donkey kong country. completely different map, levels, enemies, etc. land 2 and 3 are closer to country 2 and 3, but still not direct ports. they aren't just missing stuff that was in the country games, so they're still worth playing IMO. I think some of the songs are actually better in the land games. some songs just sound better in 8-bit chiptune, like krook's march for example.
@ToxicallyMasculinelol

especially the later levels, the skyscraper and blimp and all that stuff is amazing
You really should play donkey Kong land 1. It’s the only one of the land series with its own distinct levels and music. Land 2 and 3 are just ports of country 2 and 3 (albeit still great).
Dk2 might have more bangers, but nothing beats aquatic atmosphere
@spacepope8495

Also the intro stage starting w just drums/nature sounds… tho the DKC2 intro stage might be even better somehow
Donkey Kong is Crankys Grandson. DK Jr is Donkeys dad
I actually have to thank the super mario movie for finally making me play DKC 🙈 haha
Donkey Kong is always my preference over Diddy. Idk why but the weight he has just helps me time jumps better.
Christ, if only the gba had the same sound chip of the super nintnedo made by Sony, it would be the ultimate way to play a lot of super nintendo classics
Similar to you donkey Kong Country was my first video game, Except it was donkey Kong Country Returns and it was on the the 3Ds
The GBA's CPU and PPU (Picture Processing Unit) are actually much more powerful than the SNES'. I think the main issue is the small, low-res display as well as battery life.
I remember when it came out, and it was big deal!
Did you ever include the miyamoto quote of people tolerating mediocre gameplay as long as it's pretty?
what about the game where you fart in donkey kongs mouth and he's all ''uh oh this nu banana ''
For some reason, and I think the reason might be I played them more often, DKC seems easier than mario to me.
Love the entire trilogy but I will always love the second one the best.
I agree this game is great but it really should not be someone's first platformer for the first few platformers you play I reccomend Mario or Kirby
Is the anyone alive now who was alive in 1985?
that was a poor pun...
Come on. Starting video off "WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORLD VIDEO GAME." Jr high-school level writing. Nobody cares. Its a very popular game, due almost all to nintnedo pushing it on you to buy it over and over again, while giving shaft to #2 and 3.

This comment has absolutely zero to do with the video so take your religious crap and spout it elsewhere.
You're pronouncing NES and SNES wrong. It should be spoken as one word.
