Donkey Kong Country 3 Review - Rareware Innovation At Its Finest

Ойындар

Yes, it's finally time for the long-awaited conclusion to the Donkey Kong Country review trilogy. This time around I of course will be taking a long, hard look at Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble the final game in the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy. This review turned out to be the longest scripted video I've ever made so I guess that should tell you I've got a lot to say when it comes to DKC3. Hope you all enjoy. Ack out!

Agreed. As good as the newer two games are, they never captured the same feel as the original DKC trilogy in my opinion - think part of that is how much the Kremlings brought to the earlier entries; the characters in the later games lacked ‘something’.

I have to disagree with your criticism about not including the story in the game, but the manual. In this particular part you have to judge the game from the time it was created in. Back then it was very common for almost all games to explain the story in the manual and it was normal to read the manual beforehand. Also, back then they could not know in advance the existence of online game stores and the lack of physical manuals when buying a game at online stores, so we shouldn't criticize the developers for being unable to predict 30 years into the future. Otherwise, very good video!

Thanks! I can see where you’re coming from but even setting aside the issue of playing the game in the future I just would’ve liked more of a setup in the game rather than in the manual. I do like reading the manual and I get that they can include more detail in there but that still doesn’t absolve you from putting even a few lines of text explaining what’s going on in your actual game in my opinion. There’s already a decent amount of dialogue in the game as it is so it probably wouldn’t have been an issue.

I guess the thing we need to remember too is that the SNES hardware was severely limited and Rare had a habit of maxing out their cartridge space, likely there wasn’t room left to store a story element there. (Remember these were the days where kilobytes of Data were still significant amounts of data to store, they only had 4mb storage to use) That being said, online storefronts like NSO really should be providing proper copies of manuals, they do have a completely separate app that has info but it’s not the same as being able to read the manual from a menu in game.

I placed DKC3 again this year after getting a copy for my collection and I think its pretty good its hard to top DKC2 but they got creative with these levels and gimmicks. I thought the music was a bit weak but all in all a fun time

I think it's just more laid back than the DKC2 for the most part. It takes a slower, more ambiance-based approach, a great example of this is Hanging' at Funky's, less bombastic but its got a slow quieter charm of its own all the same. Some of it is still really up there like Cascade Capers (waterfall/cliff levels) and Water World has a very interesting and different take to Aquatic Ambience that feeds really well into DKC3's setting and mood. It's a slightly different sort of mood than its predecessors, but great all the same. Also can't forget Bonus Time!

Just so you know, 103% isn’t “true” completion for this game. You can put in a code for a harder version where there is no save point barrels in the levels and then when you beat the game you get 105%

Diddy Kong Kong Racing is definitely one of my absolute favorite racing games of all time as well. I’m sure some people don’t think a story has any place in a racing game but in my opinion the charming and light-hearted story of DKR is one of the greatest strengths of that game.

I think the reasoning for including Kiddy Kong over DK or another Kong is that it's meant to be Dixie's starting role and having a stronger or more experienced male Kong might overshadow her. So they designed a character that was very strong but stupid with little personal agency that would allow Dixie to maintain her position as the dominant member of the duo. That might sound sexist, but it was the 90's and a female protagonist would've been a hard enough sell as-is without a cool guy to contend with. Even all the marketing tried to portray Kiddy as something cooler than he is. Also I THINK Kiddy is slightly faster than Dixie but don't quote me on that.

I love DKC2 (it brings back memories of summer 1997-1999) and 3 equally (only played it in 2019 and on. I hated 3 at first because it felt too different and Kong Fused Cliffs was awful. But I stuck with the game and eventually get 103%, 105% and then 104%. I ended playing so much I started running it as fast as I could getting 2 hours 45 mins for 103%. Now it’s one of my favourite games. I enjoyed your review/commentary a lot, you earned a new subscriber! Also, screw the Simon Says Banana Bird game, it’s unfair to people with bad memories! :(

Oh god, Kong Fused Cliffs was something else wasn’t it… I love Rare’s innovative level design and I think it’s one of their strongest points but sometimes they do go a little too wild and miss the mark a bit. You know when you get to the point of speedrunning a game you’re truly devoted. It’s really cool to hear that you enjoyed DKC3 that much! Thanks for the nice comment! And yeah the Bird Game was kind of annoying, especially on the last few…

Kiddie Kong's rope movement speed is quicker. You can also roll off edges and jump mid air with Kiddie. Also some bosses are easier defeat with Kiddie. Some DK coins are easier to get with Kiddie. Some enemies can only be defeated by him too. Yes he's annoying but he does have his merits and the way he holds barrels is good to defend yourself in some areas.

A game worthy of the original trilogy I think. What it lacks I think is a strong theme. The first has a technology encroaching on nature thing going on, the second has the pirate adventure thing, this. . . the great outdoors? Just a minor thing, but still, a great addition to the series

@@super_burstmode3652 Kinda like the first one but not as strong. I can see what you mean though. If you compare DKC1 and DKC3's progression through the world's, there are similarities. But I guess, for me anyway, it doesn't seem as much like a journey. DKC1 you go from the Jungle into the industrial area, before going on a Pirate ship for some reason, where as DKC3 all happens in the same environment. Not complaining though. I like the game. I just think the aesthetics are a step down from the Pirate adventure of the second game. What could they have done different to make it feel like an escalation? No idea, and these days we got the Retro Studios games on top of this great trilogy to provide it
