DKC 2 music always hits me in the feels. Almost painful levels of nostalgia.

That’s what I love about it. It’s so beautiful, and it resonates the human spirit on such a deep level, unknowable to the conscious mind, that it’s painful, in the best way possible. It invokes that lost sense of childhood experience that we all knew, once, but that we can never quite comprehend anymore. At least, that’s how it feels to me. It’s suffocatingly beautiful.

Wonderful video Steve! As someone who has pretty limited experience with the original DKC trilogy, watching this gives me a whole new perspective on what makes them so special and hearing your stories of growing up with and discovering the series was awesome! Great work!

I’ve never even played these games but I ended up feeling the nostalgia of them and just that era of video games in general by the end. Absolute bop of a vid, dude.

The original DKC is my favorite, but it'll probably never be the same without living in the mid-'90s when prerendered 3D graphics were new, and felt like a taste of what the future would bring. Seeing the original prerendered models used in promotional imagery in game magazines and the like was literally like seeing alien technology. Now, it's something kids roll their eyes at.

Beautiful video. It gave me quite some feels. I was born in 1990 and got a SNES in 1997. I also grew up playing Super Mario World, but I didn't come to appreciate Donkey Kong Country until much later.

I also grew up on these games! The DKC trilogy were the first games I 100%ed! Or...104%? 😁 These games taught me about how important collecting EVERYTHING was! The introduction of the DK coin was the best thing ever! I don't even understand how I learned all the secrets to these games back in the 90s. Crazy how a game can have such an impact on your life. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

Some of those DK coins are crazy, I couldn't imagine completing the game 100% without a guide for some of the tougher and obscure ones, you're showing your gamer cred real hard right now

I'm loving the type of content you're making because by offering your own personal experience with a game you're giving a unique perspective on it which can be hard to do espically something as popular as the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Keep it up!

This is crazy how parellel our childhoods were. Born in '97, I remember playing Yellow before I could read, I grew up on my grandma's SNES, but I played FF4 in addition to SMW and between my cousins and mom and grandma and I we beat the whole DKC trilogy over and over again lol. I've gotten 101%, 102%, and 103% on all three games respectively and played DKC2 so much that I can beat it at 102%in an afternoon Very nice video, I'm glad you came around to the trilogy

Finally had time watch - loved this Steve. I can’t think of a better sum up of why the series is so special. Loved that this was your response to finally playing 102% after all these years of me begging you lol! I might have to stream myself playing it all the way through as well, I haven’t done it in years!

I see wideo, I like. Also DK country and SMW were some of the best memories of mine because I was always player 2 and there was a spot for me there. We only ever had them at my grandma's, but that was a big part of my childhood.

I was born in 95 and the only console i had growing up was a secondhand SNES with the original DKC, Killer Instinct, Batman Forever and Pinocchio. Your experience of playing the original and later experiencing the sequels thanks to emulation really resonated with me. The nostalgia hitted me hard, I love DKC and I consider a real privilege to have grown up playing these games. Great video my man.

Great video! This series is my personal favourite and I’m going through each of them again right now using the run button sparingly. It’s forced me to play differently and I can’t believe how much it changes the gameplay. I can see better now how the devs designed each level and how it progresses, What a thrill! Finally got the time to watch this! Gotta say you did a superb job at connecting all 3 games and taking something deep and meaningful from each, something that I’ve felt very similarly on with my time through DKC as well. I played em at a young age on the GBA ports of all things and still have yet to play 3, but I hope to soon since it’s on my list and your thoughts are what’s compelling me now! I love everything about these games and they’ll remain timeless for just how perfect those controls are with themes of nature and family on top of the ethereal soundscape and level design, also… these games are just like…. really freakin funny at times lol. Love the additional Steve lore with each passing vid and hope to see even more as the months go on :)

These games really are timeless to me. I don't think 3 is an absolute must play as I stated in the video, but it's definitely worth it to get the big picture of the entire trilogy. Thanks for the kind words as always my dude

And this is why I I prefer playing it legit than speedrunning. LULZ! Jokes aside, great story with the games, Steve. I don't have the nostalgic vibes with the DKC as you do, even though I played them during its tenure. But seeing you play these games (and reminding myself of your old SteveOHobo streams of yesteryear) makes me wanna revisit the games again. And as always, looking forward to your next video!

Sometimes I can't believe you're still with me watching my stuff, really good times back then!

This was a wonderful ride with an unexpected end that I absolutely loved and relate to. As it's harder to sink as much time for me finding that enjoyment and love of novelty versus everything being competitive all the time has been a breath of fresh air.

I never played any of the DKC games due to the SNES not being out where I'm from. I always was interested in it since it felt like 2D Crash Bandicoot. This video helped me want to play those games, so thank you!

Today I learned it is called 'Diddy's Kong Quest', not 'Diddy Kong's Quest'

Thank you for letting me reflect on my own time with these games. As someone who grew up with and owned all three DKC games since before I could remember not having one, your reflections on the series mirror how I felt in my childhood playing them. DKC2 was this imaginative journey that I loved, but was infinitely frustrated by due to its much more momentum-based levels. DKC3 served to pick me up from that, focusing on its slower, bonus and puzzle-based excursions and constant desire to reinvent itself; it ended up being the first I beat and was my favorite... until it lead me back to DKC2 and I ended up completing and adoring that all the more. And then stood DKC1, strangely aged in the face of its younger siblings, a bit more rough around the edges, a bit more "Mario" in its level design, a bit more "cheeky Rare" in its enemy placement... but with this infinitely fascinating and unique allure. Somehow that Rare logo jingle just felt so grand, so... almost otherworldly, and its worldbuilding definitely ended up reflecting that. I haven't thought about that experience in a really long time. And I think about Donkey Kong more than 99% of people do (or at least I hope, otherwise I'd worry for a DK-obsessed population)! Blows my mind to hear your experience with the game and how close it hits, ESPECIALLY from someone who didn't go the path of "first come the Countries, then the cartoon, and then DK64". The way it's articulated here is really wonderful. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Wow, thanks for sharing your story with the games as well! I find it so interesting that DKC3 was the first you completed. "Cheeky Rare" gave me a chuckle, that's such a good way of describing how some of their design felt. You really felt in when you talk to Cranky Kong and he just shits on you for not 100% completing the game LOL

Just like you, I dropped DKC1 at one of its hardest levels and didn't know 2 or 3 even existed, I just moved away from it into the next generation. But after watching this great video i'm now ready to experience the sequel i've been ignoring for years, thank you for the push, i'm sure playing it will be a blast!

Its crazy how much simarities our gaming journeys have. I have started writing down the games im playing and the ones I've finished to enjoy more variety, in response to my at times toxic relationships with some competitive games, especially overwatch. There are still significant difference, but both this video and the previous one on overwatch really resonated with me on some levels.

I've found that I now have a much healthier relationship with Overwatch after getting my story out and taking the game less seriously in order to put more time into other games. It's awesome to meet people who share a similar experience.

@@wizawhat my experience with overwatch was remarkable similar to yours (i pretty much follow the same stages but everything happens to a lesser degree if that makes sense) I too enjoy ow as a side game from time to time. It was great for me to hear your experiences with games, thanks for sharing.

Funny how SMW is also considered one of your first ever games btw, because I also technically had a very similar experience while playing the SNES in 2006 of all things (TL;DR: living in Brazil, fairly hard to buy newer consoles around here, and getting that SNES second-hand by someone else), where I played SMW, one licensed game (the SNES Aladdin game by Capcom in my case), and another game which wasn't all too remarkable and didn't give me as much of an impact; as you can probably tell, my story is actually very similar to yours, which again I just find funny as heck LMAO Well, that would be it, but I also have a bit of a similar story with SMW in comparison to DKC (alongside a few other games as well), that I mainly played on emulator with a underpowered Windows XP computer (which also basically made retro games the only option for me to emulate thanks to that), where I've played it, and where I've kind of lost the respect that I had for SMW over the years, with DKC I still very much enjoy playing all these years later, even to the point of getting 101% on the original not too long ago, and in general I still very much respect Rare and what they did with the trilogy a lot haha

Having watched the speedrun race live added that extra bit of oomf.

This was too good. Now I need to play all the dkcs

Long before the game awards, you'd have reviewers vote for their game of the year. In 1994 Donkey Country was the consensus winner, it won Game of the Year in 1994.

My first game was super Mario bros/ duck hunt on NES. It’s pretty lucky for my first game to be the most iconic game of all time

Amazing video, even though i haven't played any Donkey Kong game at all! Now it would be interesting to know how you feel about Tropical Freeze as someone who is that heavily invested in the series...

played this in game boy color, and for me... there is no donkey kong game like this. Other new games of the franchise doesnt feel the same as the first one.
