Donald Sutherland and the Elusive Oscar | Why He Wasn't Nominated

The late, great Donald Sutherland had a remarkable career in film that spanned seven decades, and yet he was never once nominated for an Academy Award. In this video, I talk about his many acclaimed performances and discuss the reasons why he didn't get an Oscar nomination. #oscars #academyawards #donaldsutherland #ordinarypeople #elusiveoscar #theawardscontender

I used to think he was snubbed for a nomination for Ordinary People because he had told Redford he wanted to play the father instead of the therapist for which he was originally cast and maybe that was frowned upon by voters. I didn't know he'd never been nominated before that. His role in OP is one of my favorite male lead performances ever. Beautiful tribute.

I'm sure Mr. Sutherland and his family would greatly appreciate this tribute. I admit that even though I knew who he was, I didn't really notice him until 2005's Pride and Prejudice! I remember being very surprised seeing him onscreen with all British actors and he was in no way out of place. I'm so glad that these more recent generations know him as Snow in the Hunger Games. His quiet intimidation was perfect casting. RIP good sir!

Actually, a lot of American films from that time got little or no love from BAFTA. If you look back at the New Hollywood era (and in the 2 years before and after that period), so many films that the Academy lauded the most (specifically the films that either got nominated for Best Picture or Best Director at the Oscars) didn't get nominated by the BAFTAs for either Best Picture or Best Director. And if those films DID get nominated at the BAFTAs, it was only one or just a few nominations in smaller categories. Best Picture or Best Director Oscar nominees that got little or no recognition at the BAFTAs: 1965: Best Pic nominee _A Thousand Clowns_ and Best Director nominees _The Collector_ and _Woman in the Dunes_ (no BAFTA nominations) -- Best Pic winner _The Sound of Music_ only got a Best Actress BAFTA nod and Best Pic nominee _Ship of Fools_ only got 2 BAFTA acting nods. 1966: Best Pic nominee _The Sand Pebbles_ and Best Director nominee _The Professionals_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic nominee _The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming_ only got a Best Newcomer nomination for Alan Arkin. 1967: Best Director nominee _In Cold Blood_ and Best Pic nominee _Doctor Dolitte_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic nominee _Guess Who's Coming to Dinner_ only got BAFTA nods for acting and screenplay. 1968: Best Pic nominee _Rachel Rachel_ only got one BAFTA nod for Best Actress. Best Pic nominee _Funny Girl_ only got Best Actress and 2 tech nods at the BAFTAs. Best Pic nominee _The Lion in Winter_ only got BAFTA nods for acting, screenplay and tech awards. Best Director nominee _The Battle of Algiers_ only got a single "UN Award" at BAFTA. 1969: Best Pic nominee _Anne of the Thousand Days_ only got 2 tech nods at BAFTA. Best Pic nominee _Hello Dolly_ only got 4 BAFTA nods for acting and tech. Best Director nominee _They Shoot Horses Don't They_ only got BAFTA nods for acting and screenplay. Best Director nominee _Alice's Restaurant_ got one BAFTA nod for music. 1970: Best Pic nominees _Five Easy Pieces_ and _Love Story_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic winner _Patton_ and Best Pic nominee _Airport_ only got 1 or 2 BAFTA nods (acting, sound). BAFTA didn't care about 1970. 1971: Best Pic nominee _Fiddler on the Roof_ only got 3 tech nods at BAFTA. 1972: Best Pic nominees _Sounder_ and _The Emigrants_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic winner _The Godfather_ only got BAFTA nods for acting, music and costumes. Best Pic nominee _Deliverance_ only got 3 tech nods at BAFTA. 1973: Best Pic winner _The Sting_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic nominee _The Exorcist_ only got one BAFTA nod for sound. Best Pic nominee _American Graffiti_ only got one BAFTA nod for acting. Best Pic nominee _Cries and Whispers_ only 2 BAFTA nods, acting and tech. Best Pic nominee _A Touch of Class_ only got nods for actress and screenplay at BAFTAs. Best Director nominee _Last Tango in Paris_ only got one BAFTA nod for actor. BAFTA especially didn't care about 1973. 1974: Best Director nominee _A Woman Under the Influence_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Picture winner _The Godfather: Part II_ only got 4 BAFTA nods for acting, music and film editing. Best Pic nominee _Lenny_ only got 3 acting nods at BAFTA. Best Pic nominee _The Towering Inferno_ only got tech and one acting nod at BAFTA. They didn't care about 1974 either. 1975: Best Director nominee _Amarcord_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic nominee _Nashville_ only got acting and screenplay BAFTA nods, but won for Sound. 1976: Best Pic nominee _Bound for Glory_ and Best Director nominee _Seven Beauties_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Director nominee _Face to Face_ only got one acting nod at BAFTA. 1977: Best Pic nominee _The Goodbye Girl_ only got acting and screenplay nods at BAFTA. Best Pic nominee _The Turning Point_ with 11 Oscar nominations only got a Best Actress nod at BAFTA. 1978: Best Pic nominees _Coming Home, Heaven Can Wait,_ and _An Unmarried Woman_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Director nominee _Interiors_ only got 2 acting nods at BAFTA. BAFTAs and 1978? Forget about it. 1979: Best Pic nominee _Norma Rae_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic nominee _Breaking Away_ only got a best newcomer award at BAFTA. Best Pic nominee _All That Jazz_ only got Best Actor and a bunch of tech nods at BAFTA. 1980: Best Director nominee _The Stunt Man_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Pic winner _Ordinary People_ only got two BAFTA nods for acting. Best Pic nominee _Raging Bull_ only got 3 BAFTA nods for acting and film editing. Best Pic nominee _Tess_ only got 3 tech nods at BAFTA. Best Pic nominee _Coal Miner's Daughter_ only got actress and sound nods at BAFTA. 1981: Best Pic nominee and Best Director winner _Reds_ only got acting and 2 tech nods at BAFTA. 1982: Best Pic nominee _The Verdict_ (no BAFTA nods) -- Best Director nominee _Das Boot_ with 6 Oscar nods only got one Best Foreign Film nod at BAFTA. It's nuts to think that so many American films that either became full-on classics, were super popular or were wildly acclaimed _(The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, The Sound of Music, The Exorcist, The Sting, American Graffiti, Nashville, Deliverance, Ordinary People, Raging Bull, Sounder, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Patton, A Woman Under the Influence, Five Easy Pieces, Love Story, Airport, Fiddler on the Roof, The Towering Inferno, Coming Home, Norma Rae, All That Jazz, Breaking Away, In Cold Blood, Bound for Glory, The Goodbye Girl, Coal Miner's Daughter, Reds, The Verdict)_ got little or no love from BAFTA. While many foreign classics from that era like _Das Boot, Last Tango in Paris, Woman in the Dunes, The Emigrants, Cries and Whispers, Amarcord, Seven Beauties_ and _Tess_ also got the same treatment from BAFTA.

I just watched “Ordinary People” Again, a couple weeks ago. He was so good in it and should’ve been nominated for an Oscar. Years ago, when I was young, he attended an event that I was working at as a server. He could not have been any more rude, entitled or demanding with the wait staff. Ironically Faye Dunaway was there and she could not have been more gracious. About five years ago, I met him at a screening for a film that he was in. He was OK, not nice, just OK even though I was with a famous actress friend that he knew. Maya Angelou was right “You never forget how someone made you feel.” As an actor as he was very talented, but I will always remember how he treated me when I was just a lowly server in his eyes.

Sometimes I don’t know what’s worse for an actor. Always being nominated and never winning or never being nominated in the first place. But I guess that depends on your attitude if you really desire physical validation for your work. For some actors, the work is the award itself.

  • @rustincohle2135

Being nominated multiple times and never winning is definitely better than never being nominated period. I think the better question is, which is worse? a.) being nominated once and winning but never receive another nomination again OR b.) being nominated multiple times and never winning Is it better to be an F. Murray Abraham/Adrien Brody/Timothy Hutton OR a Peter O'Toole/Richard Burton/Claude Rains? I'd much rather be in the latter category cuz it means you get great roles consistently throughout your career. I imagine most actors would wanna be known for a great body of work with no award rather than just ONE singular great role that was stellar enough for a gold trophy.

  • @sarasamaletdin4574

To me winning is not that important, it’s so dependent on the competition in that year; campaigns, how popular the actor is overall in Hollywood and how popular the movie is (like how EEOAO supporting actresses would not have been nominated for other film). Nomination however confirms that you are one in the elite levels of Hollywood and your work has been recognized. That’s why it’s criminal when actors like Sutherland don’t get one nomination. But I am glad he got Oscar anyway even if it wasn’t competitive!

@@rustincohle2135 that’s a no-brainer, b of course. It would be so frustrating to nominated for multiple nominations and just be so close and yet so far of nabbing a trophy. If you only get nominated once and that nomination does get you an Oscar, then at least you have an Oscar.

I imagine most people would rather be a Peter O'Toole than an F. Murray Abraham or be a Claude Rains than a Timothy Hutton. I always appreciated the respect Donald Sutherland gave to Hunger Games. He could have treated it like any other popular YA movie but he read the books and wrote about what he thought worked about them. They likely expanded on his character from the books to give the actor more to work with but in my opinion President Snow is more compelling in the movies than the books because of the scenes they added. Which is what an adaptation SHOULD do: expand on the material instead of just copy/pasting the story. I haven't read the newest book or seen the newest movie focusing on Snow's character, but I don't think a lot of that would have happened if Sutherland hadn't given his input and taken the material seriously.

(a filmed play); Walter Matthau for THE SUNSHINE BOYS? Maximilian Schell THE MAN IN THE GLASS BOOTH (another filmed play). LOCUST was not a popular film in Hollywood (Karen Black said it contributed to her career's downward spiral) but they did nominate Burgess Meredith for Best Supporting Actor, so it was on their radar.

I think, especially in his younger years, DS wasn't interested in chasing awards. He was interested in working with directors and screenwriter and other actors who were doing interesting, cutting-edge films, outside the "Old Hollywood" mold. His films of the '60s and '70s have proven to be artistic classics, in many cases, but the conservative, old-school Academy at the time wasn't always playing ball. But not finding a role for which to honor him, once he was in the acclaimed senior group of actors, in the '80s and beyond, is kind of frustrating.

Alongside a veritable cavalcade of steller international actors -- Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Dominique Sanda, Francesca Bertini, Laura Betti, Stefania Casini, Ellen Schwiers, Sterling Hayden, Alida Valli, Romolo Valli, Stefania Sandrelli, and Burt Lancaster! -- Donald's performance actually stands out in the test of time. When you happen to have 317 min, please give yourself a treat to see him as a fanatical&murderous brownshirt fascist!

What a marvelous man and talent the world has lost. He was in SO great in so many movies, it’s an absolute travesty he was never nominated. RIP Donald Sutherland 🕊️🕊️🕊️

He probably should and would have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1981 Oscars if they hadn't decided to commit category fraud for Timothy Hutton to get the win. There is no way anyone could look at Conrad in Ordinary People and think he was a supporting character. Probably one of the most blatant category frauds I can think of. I get why they did it- they wanted Timothy Hutton to get recognized for his amazing work and they knew he had zero shot of winning Best Actor due to his age and being new.

Age and new ? Hutton would have never won it against De Niro anyway and against Pesci and "Jones" would have maybe stiff 😊

He is who I always bring up when people say so and so DESERVES an oscar. No no no. THIS mofo DESERVES an oscar. There've been others like O'Toole and Close, but at least they came close. Him, Steve Buscemi, and to a lesser extent Paul Giamatti have gotten criminally overlooked throughout their careers.

Mash did not win best director but was nominated. Altman never won an oscar for directing and was given an honorary oscar. The closest Altman came to winning an oscar was 2001's Gosford Park. Ron Howard won that year for A Beautiful Mind.
