no explosions, no fancy stages, no dancing lights or naked girls, just a man with his guitar captivating you with his music. If your ever around a fire with a bunch of tailgates backed up to it and Don comes on the radio it always seems like the chitter chatter dies down and people go to a different time of their lives. now that's talent

My father loved this song and it always reminds me of him when I heard it. I guess it is a Southern thing. I spent years running away from my roots, but a few notes of this and I can see light'n bugs, screen porches and my dad.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung. I was 12 years old when I first heard it and I remember thinking people will love this song 50 years from now. Well its been over 30 years now for me and I now I'm thinking long past 50.

If you go to one of his concerts today, close your eyes and you can be taken back to 1978. The man comes on stage, sits on that same tan chair, strums and sings. His voice is clear and sharp as it was in '78. He captivates his crowd and you would think they passed out lyrics to everyone. as they all sing along. we saw Don a few months back, and will go again the next time in town.

Possibly the most literate song in the history of country music. Not a typical love song/drinkin' song/train song, etc. (and I have nothing against those by the way) but this is a song about identity, about southern culture, with literary references and poetic language that is not normally heard in the typical country...an extraordinary piece of work, and well and sincerely performed by Don Williams, Remarkable song for its time and it has stood the test of time beautifully.

Something about the voice spoke to a serene sanity in a world in short supply of that. So many country songs make you feel a part of a family. This song as a youngster was the equivalent of advice from John Walton to me. A Simple, Proud, Respect - filled declaration of the common man.

I talked to Don Williams back in the late 80s. I worked for AT&T and I took a call one night from a Mr. Don Williams. I was 18 years old and I was all country when country was "uncool." Most teenagers wouldn't have recognized the name or the voice, but I about passed out. I asked him "is this 'THE' Don Williams" and he said "why yes it is sugar, and how would you know about me" and I told him I'd been listening to him all my life. we went on for a few, best night ever on my job! Love that man!!!
