Don’t Want Algae? Then BALANCE Your CO2 Levels!!!

One factor that people forget about when dealing with algae is CO2 levels. I'll be going over how to correctly balance your CO2 levels in your planted aquarium!

Great job.. Really good for on your vids.. Interesting using coke as an example. Subbed.. Looking forward to seeing more of your scaped tanks. Plus will always support another 🇨🇦

i think in this hobby fert guide is also extremely important not only liquid fert but also root tab you should talk more about it and maybe do expereiment on it especially for hightech plant

Ferts, lighting, and CO2 are the trinity when it comes to good plant growth in my opinion. I do have a fertilizer video that I plan on making in the future, so stay tuned for that!

Thanks been looking for something like this. I have the Fluval Flex 15 too, could you please explain how you positioned the nozzles and where you placed your diffuser for good flow of the CO2? Thanks

There's a few things you can do. 1. Put the diffuser right underneath the nozzles. And have one of them pointing towards the curved glass. This way, when the CO2 bubbles hit the flow, it'll spread around. For the second nozzle, I'll usually point it towards the opposite corner. 2. Put it anywhere on the right side of the glass and position the nozzles just like in the first suggestion. 3. This is what I do and is my preferred method. Use an inline atomizer. The benefit of this is that you have more control over the flow of where the CO2 goes, the dissolve rate is superior than a diffuse, and there is no diffuser in sight. The only thing is that you have to modify the filer to fit it. Not the filter itself, but the tubing. This was in a video if you wanted to see how I did it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/epau08OYps_HhMY.html @ 2:35

This is awesome bro! For algeas, why don't you get algea eaters? Wouldn't that benefit more?

It would to some extent. It can help with prevention and removal, but it is not the end all for algae control. Using algae eaters don't address the root cause of the algae. They're essentially like a bandage to the issue. I go over this a little more in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJOKqbhqlMuuj9o.html

This video took a lot longer to make than I wanted... Either way I'm gonna ask the same question as my previous video. How's the editing on this one? Did the text/captions for when I talk for majority of the time make it better or distracting?

I should also mention that if you do have a system where you cannot shut CO2 off (ex. DIY Bottle Systems). You can use an air pump that is set on a timer to turn on at night when CO2 is off. You can also take the pH of your tank without CO2 and when pH drops by 1 w/CO2 injection, CO2 should be more or less balanced. I completely forgot to add this into the video so I'll do it here and make an update vid in the future.

one question. The best scenario is to get optimum co 2 levels fast, and to make them, stay as they are. It is not good if my drop checker shows green 3 hours before my lights go off. Ishould get to optimum co 2 levels in one hour prior to lights turning on right, i mean to hit 20ppm at the end of that hour right ?

  • @TropiscapeAquatics

I wouldn't say getting optimum CO2 levels fast is the best scenario. Personally, I'd rather have a slow climb over a few hours due to it being more stable and easier to control. Think of it like drip acclimation. As for the drop checker turning green 3 hours before the lights go off, I think it's fine as long as it stays green. However, keep an eye on your livestock during those 3 hours, if they're fine and not at the surface gasping, then you're all good. Keep in mind that a drop checker is more or less a pH checker, since the checker fluid is almost the same or is the same as the pH test solution. The only difference is the concentration of the solution used for drop checkers vs pH checkers. The 1-hour optimum CO2 levels is more or less a guideline or a minimum in my opinion. I would say getting to 20 ppm before the lights go on is a better guide, instead of within 1-hour. Now, one reason to aim for optimal CO2 levels within an hour comes down to saving CO2, which may be more important to those using DIY CO2. I hope that clarified a few things! 😊

Which co2 diffuser are u using? How is called? I guess I can install it with the normal co2 tube.

  • @TropiscapeAquatics

It's called a bazooka diffuser. I find them to produce much finer bubbles compared to standard CO2 diffusers. Yes, you can use them with standard CO2 tubing.

Those are Bazooka CO2 diffusers. They're specifically designed to produce the smallest bubbles you can get for CO2, which is needed for CO2 injection.

Ummm.....so I watched your video to the end, but all I could take out is that all these procedures for balancing CO2 are no good. I was hoping you would tell us what IS good. Maybe you say that somewhere and maybe I missed it?

All of these things I mentioned in the video are for how you can measure your CO2 levels and what influences those levels. From there, it's up to you to determine to either increase or decrease CO2 given the results you have gathered and observed. There isn't a "right" way for tanks as each tank is inherently different (size, nutrients, lighting, plant species, etc.) I have a video that might be better for you. It goes over the vital components when it comes to balancing a tank in general. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJ1rw6WciZO5gpM.html
