Don’t throw out that old dehumidifier

Quick simple explanation as to why people usually toss older dehumidifiers when they basically just need a thorough cleaning.

True. True. Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Newer does not necessarily equal better.

Another cause for icing over, mainly in the late 1990s early 2000s Whirlpool slant coil models, is that they aren't low ambient rated, and the condenser isn't close enough to the evaporator for the heat to melt any ice formation, only dehumidifier I threw away had a bad compressor, it ran, but wouldn't build any pressure, both coils remained room temperature and the pressures were identical, checked the charge and the R-22 was still good, so a buddy recovered the charge and later used it to top off an old HVAC system

Boy they don't make those like that anymore, that's for sure. Now, they cut every corner they can to make refrigeration products as cheap as they can. Our recent dehumidifier was icing up. I tore it completely down, and after ten years of basement operation I have to say it was almost clean as a whistle. It had great airflow throughout. The touch dial was hard to turn on to where that item finally quit working. Electrically, nothing looked burn't, and all connections were tight. The only options were to replace the electronic control board or the Electronic power supply board... or maybe the Compressor required replacement. To sum it all up, I wasn't about to put in half the cost of buying a NEW Popular Brand 50 Pint Unit into this old unit. The basement temp is normally was 65 to 72 degrees (winter thru summer). The nearly forty years I've lived here, I average one Dehumidifier every ten year. They're basically a throw away item after 10 years, because it's doing it's job working 24/7 for us. It had cycled itself perfectly as not to ice up.

thats one thing... i know the vintage ones are alot better, and i have one from 1974 that constantly runs in the crawl space and has never had an issue and another from the 80s inside that has never had an issue, i do keep them clean... but i have never understood why the vintage ones do not have a filter yet the new ones do. seems like it would make sense to have a filter so the coil dont get clogged.

Walter Knox if you look on the side of the intake you will see four square shaped holes they were for the filter to clip into- The vintage units usually did have a filter it’s likely dry rotted over the years and been thrown out. You can order replacements online or do what I did and buy a pleated hepa filter for the intake and replace it twice a year. Only maintenance required having these filters installed is oiling the fan motor. They stay 99% dust and debris free. Check out my video called “why you should use a filter on your dehumidifier “

Looks like you found an identical Delonghi dehumidifier like mine. Well the fan motor in mine decided to take a crap on me

Fasco probably sells a generic fan motor that'll fit, I got an old Whirlpool from my grandma that had a bad fan motor, then I came across an identical unit with a bad compressor, ran, just wouldn't build any pressure, it was also from a smoker's home by the smell, I just put the good fan motor in the unit with the working compressor and it works well enough, cleaned the coils but where I have it gets too cold, I got a good deal on a VacPlus dehumidifier, so the Whirlpool will go somewhere that stays above 65 degrees and the VacPlus will be pushed to its limits, reviews are about as good as can be for a Chinese dehumidifier, so I'm confident it'll last 5 more years with routine maintenance

Last 5 years?!? I've been through three of them in the past 4 years. They last 1-2 seasons then cease to work. Unfortunately it's not due to what you show here, it's from poor craftsmanship and the refrigerant leaking out. STAY AWAY from the Haier branded units (GE and others).
