August solo training on J/111 Blur.
Here's some clips from my solo training session yesterday. 7 solid hours in full race mode. Focus on autopilot tuning, tacking and gybes. And naturally a fun downwind leg topping 15 knots.

Motoring into Kourou ( French Guyane) some years ago, along the buoyed channel, I was leaning over the doghouse watching for the next buoy when a blood curdling yell from mama, on the helm refocussred my attention. One of the large motor cats (70'-?) used for px. trips to Salut had us (36' vd stadt) nicely straddled. Fortunately, there wasn't time to get down for the mossberg so we had to rely on lung power alone. The skipper's face was a picture as he looked up from his 'phone. Frog snot! :-)

+rayred74 It's tackline and spin halyard. a) it keeps them untangled and b) just the right resistance (more at first and then less). Try it!

interesting technique - I will definitely try it when I am solo next
real scary trip, and not just the almost -broach!! , BUT that jibe beforehand, scared the ..out of me, WHY DIDN'T you take up on the main sheet; that boom swipe could have had you overboard- esp. since you were sailing solo.

No worries. Done 100s of solo gybes without any issues.
Intressant teknik med fallen(?). Kastar du dom överbord vid nedtagning för att få en tröghet så att inte allt segel kommer ner på en gång? kanske också för att det inte skall bli knutar på fallen?

It's the NKE Autopilot remote control.
Hello Peter ( or anyone who would like to help ) , I m a kind of newbie LOL question maybe an evidence for you: 9:27 why do you have the same line ( sheeting point of you gennaker I think ) on two different winch ? It s because you re tacking/Jibbing? If I remember well ( remember I m a real newbie lol ) your line goes from sheeting point to barber hauler pulley and back to the winch, and you re having two lines, one for each side , am I wrong ? It s what we see on 9:58 Maybe I m confused because they have the same color ? Nice mastery of the art out there, thumbs up !

Hi! Yes, its one for each side, and it goes back all the way before coming back to a block at the rail just outside the big winches. Then it's crossed - i e the starboard sheets goes across to the port winch on the coachroof. So looks kind of messy :-)

Småfarlig teknik med vinschen. Sätt inte fingrarna mellan skot och vinschtrumma. Greppa skotet eller fallet med knogarna uppåt när du drar för snabbare drag och bättre grepp.
when you had that broach attempt, why did you first go to release the mainsail sheet? , as the spinnaker( gennaker in this case) is the LARGEST sail you have up!, make more sense to 'DUMP' the trim on this sail first or reef/furl it!, as this is what is holding you at the heeling angle you are at. don't most sailors have their 'mishaps' with this sail up?, as this is such a sensitive and huge sail and can drive you into a capsize if you don't manage it's power correctly.BUT regardless, it was great suspense watching you.

Hi, in 8 of 10 cases you can recover by just releasing the mainsheet or the vang, as the main push the boat into the wind (center of the sail is aft of the keel). So many times, this is enough. Next step is releasing the gennaker- Especially solo, it's a huge effort to let go of the gennaker, and then sheet it back on, so try to avoid that (lazy) 😃 With a full crew, you usually dump: vang, mainsail sheet, spinnaker sheet (just a few feet) - in this order, when the pressure becomes to much. Biggest lesson: concentrate on helming 😃

@@PeterGustafsson why dump the vang, as most say that the flatter the sail, esp. in heavy wind the LESS power you need, most people during reefing operations flatten the sail, before resorting to the reef, less airofoil shape, so less lift. logic says the looser the vang the looser the leach, the more shape in the sail.

@@andyvan5692 That's true upwind. Downwind we want the vang loose for two reasons: a) to introduce twist to get the aft leach of the main to match the gennaker twist (look at Melges 24's going downwind in a blow) and b) to reduce heeling moment by spilling air from the top of the sail (as heel is the first phase before getting into a broach).
