In today's Final Cut Pro tutorial we'll be going over a step or two that's really crucial when you start editing your video. Especially before you start cutting your talking head clips. Nothing is worse than editing a project and realizing later on that you need to change an audio effect, adjust your color grade, or add another video effect to those clips that you've already cut up a bunch.This can lead to a lot of frustration in your editing workflow. Trust me. The tips and tricks in this tutorial should have you set so later on in the edit, you can make adjustments quickly and easily.

    I also want to mention that these tips are particularly useful for interview/talking head shots/voiceover/narration media. I dont suggest doing this for all your clips. For example, I wouldn’t recommend creating compounds/multicams of all your b-roll. Another thing I want to note is that you can just create multicams for your video with audio attached instead of the compound clip method I suggested in the beginning, if you like that better. I apologize for forgetting to mention this in the video! I try to think of as many questions that people may ask and include the answers in as concise of a video as possible, but sometimes things slip my mind 😅 Thanks so much for the continued support on the channel!

    Thanks, Dylan. A question: After creating a multicam clip, I adjusted the audio levels inside (I recorded the audio separately), then jumped back to the main timeline. Later on, I realized the volume needed to be louder, went into the multicam clip again, changed the volume settings, but after jumping back to the main timeline... nothing changed. It didn't affect the audio in the main timeline, but only stayed changed in the multicam clip. I'm not sure if I missed a step... Any idea how to remedy this?

    @@DavidListenMentalHealth Hey David, that's odd...it should have changed. Are they're more than two audio clips in the Multicam? Perhaps you increased the volume of one but not the other. Other than that, I'm not sure why that'd happen.

    Yeah. There’s the audio from the camera but i disabled that. And i made sure i adjusted the right volume…. So even after cutting up the film it should work right? And the settings in the main timeline would show the identical numbers? E.g 50% loudness?

So many times I've painstakingly copied the effects/colour changes from one segment of a clip I've adjusted, and then hunt for all the other segments, holding ctrl to individually select them wherever they hide, and then pasting once they're selected 🙈 Such a game changer!!! 🎉 Cheers Dylan!!! 💪🏻

    Hi. Very useful information. Can you explain a little more about synching your audio. You said you record your audio separately. Then you sync your audio. Are you saying that in this video you recorded the audio separately then FCP can sync it? You would have to write out all your audio? Sorry for all the questions. I have so much to learn.

    Hey there! Thanks so much for watching 😊 And no worries about the questions. So basically I have my camera record the video and I have a better shotgun microphone placed just above my head (out of frame) and it's connected to a Zoom H6 recorder. So I hit record on both the camera and also on the Zoom H6. I connect my camera to my computer and take out the SD card for the audio recorder and plug it into the computer, and then I sync the video and audio by creating a Multicam. Does that answer your questions? By the way, have you seen some of these videos of mine? I think they'd help you out a bunch. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKllj6qPlaa9gqQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXmCsdOIYK3Qprg.html

    I watched this video twice, I still don’t see how this is a better solution than the much simpler process of using an adjustment layer, or even multiple versions of adjustment layers that are stacked and enabled/disabled.

  • @dylanjohndickerson

    @dylanjohndickerson

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching. Adjustment layers can be useful, but they are not the same thing as multicam or compound clips and are not useful for what I was suggesting. Aside from the fact that they adjust everything underneath them, which can be annoying if you have other media that you don’t want to be affected like transitions as an example, they also don’t accept audio adjustments. Plus if you have clips that require different adjustments, you have to cut the adjustment layers so they perfectly fit over those clips. Give multicams/compound clips a shot.

    Would using Open Clip from the Browser to set audio or color grade be a better idea for attached audio? This way you can edit portions of the clip into the timeline rather than putting the entire clip in and making a compound clip.

    @@seecraig Okay I was a bit blown away at first and shocked I've never heard of this, however after running some tests, if you end up cutting up that clip on your normal timeline and decide you need to change something later on, the adjustment will not be made on all the cut up sections of that clip on the main timeline. Quite a bummer. That would've been such a cool find. I appreciate you letting me know about it though!

  • @seecraig

    @seecraig

    @@dylanjohndickerson Thanks for testing and noting that. Oddly there's virtually no information in FCP Help or User Manual on this function. It would seem once editing the clip into a timeline the dependency is immediately broken. While it makes it useful for applying an initial modification (audio fix or base color grade) but not at all for rippling changes. Apple should document this in more detail. It's almost as if it's an immediately independent compound clip.
