I actually had to admit to myself that I’m currently settling in all facets of my life right now…it’s lead me to be surrounded by people that I would never go out of my way to associate with otherwise…it’s actually depressing. I’m slowly trying to work myself out of it, day by day…

I agree with Adora, Sarah. You deserve better. I was probably in a similar situation for a long time. It did a lot of damage to my soul, but it's only now surfacing.(Granted, I also learned a lot.) I think, Sarah, that it may be necessary to work yourself out of it in a drastic manner, not slowly day by day. I broke out of my situation in a way that has really hurt very badly but I think that it was necessary (also psychologically, to draw a line, and to leave a lot of stuff behind). I am struggling, still reeling from what I experienced in a bad town.I just finally owned up to it and e-mailed a friend on the other side of the world about it. (I actually made five very drastic attempts to get away, with no or almost no money, so you can imagine how that goes. I was drowning, being suffocated to death...I really had to get out. I thought I would succeed, that I could make things better, for others too, that perseverance would pay off. I was wrong.)

My friend Julie said exactly this to me, around 30 years ago when I was living in Florida, the only place so far where I've ever felt home. This idea of not settling, it's so alien to many people, they think it's daft to want the best possible for yourself. They're convinced that the most that is possible is to put up with what youve been dealt, even if that is really bad. Breaks your heart to hear that, doesn't it? Sadly, they can also really hold others back who want more from life than just putting up with the mediocre and the bad.

She said that about relationships at the time, but it applies for anything. I have heard someone say or write that you get what you put up with or something along those lines, much better phrased. It's like "take charge of your life because if you don't, someone else will take charge".

i'm actually not so sure what to make of this.. because to live by this principle implies one is above others, and that one is too good for everything around it. this probably isn't the healthiest mindset to go through life with.. maybe, a better mindset would be to focus on oneselves instead of on others.. good things come to those who better themselves 😌
