    The example video of you being tired and thinking your art was crap...I would love to be able to produce something like that. So here's number 4: don't underestimate yourself or put yourself down. There will be good days and bad days...

    I quit art not so long ago. I got discouraged. The reason is that each time I draw or paint, it feels as though I was not improving, and my art sucks, consistently doing bad. Not until just today when I read a book and there was this chapter about motivation and purpose. Art then crossed my mind, then I found my passion once again. And then while scrolling youtube, found this video. And this video was a great help. I realized now that the reason why I was doing bad consistently, is because I wasn't patient and was not realistic. Thank you for this video.

    @@leif1075 Talent is nonsense and waste of time to think about. It comes down to skill, just like anything else. Just like playing piano, etc, you have to practice. Sure take days off when you want. But what if everyday you don't feel like doing it? There has to be a point where you treat it like work and be disciplined and do it.

    @@SchaeferArt So what's the solution for when you never ever have fun? As in; art wasn't fun before, it's not fun now, and there's practically no chance for it to be fun in the future? Cause that's my relationship with art and learning art.

  • @SchaeferArt

    @SchaeferArt

    @@MikeMozzaro Then why are you doing art? That would be my question. If I found something that I never have fun doing, and it was never fun when I did it, and I know it will never be fun, then why would I do it? What's the point? I probably wouldn't do it. Makes no sense. Most people start creating art because they enjoy it (have passion) and have fun but eventually lose sight of that fun and enjoyment.

    @@SchaeferArt Well in my case; it's because I want to get good. Specifically I wish to get good enough to create the specific things I want to create well enough that I can show others something that accurately reflects how I'm envisioning them. I have no inherent enjoyment of art; at no point in my life did I ever just draw for the sake of it, nor do I ever see myself drawing for fun either. Art is a goal, a tool I have to master so I can do the things I actually do have passion for.

    I have been discouraged countless times by my art whether it's my own reaction to it or outside reaction (or lack of, LOL), but yet I keep at it because it's the only thing I feel I HAVE to do because of some deep down burning passion for it. I have gotten better but will never be great or even good, but still, I will keep doing it for the love of it and that's the bottom line.

    This is my story of what i've been doing for the past 3months and the progress i did to learning how to type fast and comparing some aspects of it to drawing, i only started to draw recently, so i'm a total beginner but you can probably learn something reading this, thanks if you have time to read it, sorry if i typed too long and unnecessary stuff, English is not my first language hhh :D i've learned something from the process of improving my typing speed , at first i didn't know the correct method to type on the keyboard and i only used my 2 pointer fingers , but step by step i learned the correct technique, practiced it to the point where it become muscle memory, at first i was worst than my old technique in terms of speed but i realized that speed isn't really the issue, it's more with the accuracy so always the higher priority in typing faster is not to type fast first but to type accurate then the speed comes 2nd , and at first , like the first month, i would spend literally 4 hours at least 2+ hours typing on Typeracer while putting a music on the background or talking to people on discord when i get board because i was really into it and the truth is: It sucked for the first month you know doing the same thing over and over you know and the fact that i didn't stop, every day (expect Sunday) after the first month, i actually saw huge improvements , went from 20wph to 60~70wph, now that i have more experience and know the method to get better i just kept doing it over and over and now i hit 110wph sometimes and at average i do 80~94wph with high accuracy, but this is where my typing ends , it took 3 months or so to get to top10% but unlike drawing, for drawing it takes usually more, at first when i started drawing hhh it was really bad , i started with drawing circles over and over , shading them for some reason hhh, after that i tried to copy an anime drawing on the internet, i didn't do any Block-in or anything just went with the lines like a totally new beginner does and it actually turned not that bad first a first time because i spent over 4hours drawing ever so slowly and after that i tried to make it digital using photoshop and i did with some help of youtube videos so because i don't have pen to draw on pc it took sometime and the end result wasn't that great to be honest but surprisingly it was the first time in my life that i looked at something i drew and i was like... actually drawing isn't that hard , i read a book called drawing on the right brain, it gave me some confidence, i re-did the same thing which is drawing another anime picture but this time i learned from my first time drawing and i really really took my time and i was drawing like surprisingly good , i drew the face exactly like i saw it on the picture because for some reason anime faces are kinda easy to draw, the hair was kinda hard but it actually turned better than my last attempt , the clothes were missed up but the end result was 100% better , after that i did the same thing of making the sketch digital but this time i used SAI instead of photoshop and it's by far so much much better than photoshop if you only have a mouse and can draw in real life, Photoshop is more like for collaring and shading and i'm not at that level yet, i only started drawing , and when making it digital i actually learned some of the mistakes i made with the hair hhh i made a lot of adjustments and spent more time editing the lines the drawing the sketch probably and the end result was , i just couldn't believe it, my little sister was like WOW it looks good, after the 2nd attempt i red more of the book i'm saw you channel , and learned about Block-in and then i was like... GG i understand now how to improve my drawing even further and here i'm not giving up and still having drawing in mind and exploring youtube videos, the only thing i regret is that i don't have much time to practice drawing so just like in typing i just need to make 3 months where i can focus on just drawing for 4hrs per day at least and i should get much comfortable drawing, now in this Era of technology you can learn stuff much much faster.

    Gosh - this is the video I needed to hear. My covid project was/is to learn a foreign language (primarily Spanish, but I recently added Japanese). I am frustrated over how few books there are under the “easy to read” category (for English speakers learning Spanish). So I had the idea that maybe I could write my own books and publish them. So that led to a need to illustrate the books - and I am here looking for drawings lessons! Some days I think I bit off more than I can chew. But learning new skills is better than wasting my days on Facebook or KZread, right?

    Don't quit, right! Gotta tattoo this one on my hand. 😁 No matter what I wanna learn and how much I love it basically, I can't stick to anything more than 1-2 weeks. So there are 4-5 things which always come back again and again for years now. But it's frustrating this way. Like I have no power or control to go on any longer than that. 😑

    something I am struggling with. I was hoping to graduate finally with my BFA this summer. Apparently school wasn't offering any studio classes that I need to graduate. Burning through savings, looking for a job... A friend of mine emailed me an opportunity to join her team of artists that do portraits. I applied and well from the sounds of it, I got the job. Also, my painting teacher this last spring emailed me an opportunity to lead grad students and artists as well work with him and his team of artists for a mural for the science center here. which led to a business to reach out to with another mural opportunity. and another business I met with also asked for a proposal. This morning I got an email from the Director of the Art Dept. here about a showcase opportunity for outstanding students. I've been digging and clawing my way back into classes for the fall, had to refile/renew my FINAID so late in the term, but looking at this positive support from faculty and peers and mentors. Quitting is not an option. Hard work often goes overlooked, but sometimes it doesn't. I'm trying to get past art students to pick up their tools again and continue to create. I am often tired, depressed, and lazy, but still have time to create even when I should be sleeping or making sure I eat. When I watch your videos I sometimes feel your frustrations, but at the same time I feel we both undervalue ourselves to a point where self-deprecation is a form of motivation, yet still stings. I am learning although I can usually paint a face and animal I struggle so much with landscapes and plants. There are good days and there are bad days like some other comments have stated, but you are an amazing artist and the fact that you mentor and teach through KZread is amazing. I've learned more through my own circle of artists like you, whom I've reached out to than in a classroom, but also able to bring what you all do into a classroom. These advice vids are really helpful, the mind of an artist is amazing. Hugs man. Hopefully someday, later this year we can go plein air painting.

    Funnily enough I am learning German, Japanese and how to draw. I have a priority list of what gets done when I have limited time but I try to have realistic expectations at how much better I am getting and just plug away at it. I know if I just keep going I will be much better at all three in 5, 10, 20 years time.

    I agree with "enjoying the process" more than anything. Due to the fact that I want it to look perfect from the get go, I sometimes do not even start, which I know is silly, yet it gets he better of me. What do you think of the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards?

    i really like color, so learning to draw is slow for me. i don't have the time to go out and paint, nor do i have a tablet. and drawing in ms paint with a mouse is inexact to say the least. maybe i'll get some colored pencils and draw. also, i drew something after i wrote this.

    It was really painful when I began to learn painting. I didn't know where to start. I turned around and looked at those successful painters. I felt out of reach and I felt that I would never reach their excellent level.That makes me very disappointed and lost. In addition, I was afraid that I had learned painting for a long time, but I didn't choose the right direction and method, resulting in nothing. That confusion about my future was really tormented, There is also the collocation of colors and images, which makes it difficult to draw without reference. I am eager to create independently but have no clue, which really worries me

    You made a few mistakes (not in your grammar or English) regarding your learning process, which happens to all of us (yes, even me). The first one is comparing yourself to others. This will kill the joy of learning anything. What you need to think and realize is that these great, successful painters you were looking at, they didn't become like that in a short time. They didn't start like that. It takes time and practice and effort. Many years of practice. If you want to see my progress and progression, I can show you. It's not pretty haha. It took me between 2-5 years, maybe even a bit longer before I felt happy with what I was creating. Even nowadays, I still create crappy paintings or drawings. Every artist does. Don't let the internet world fool you. Everyone only posts there best or good stuff, but we all fail and make crappy stuff haha.

  • @SchaeferArt

    @SchaeferArt

    Also, another misconception. Almost all artists use references for everything they draw or paint. I don't know where you got this idea that artists just create independently all the time. Most artists never do this. The only way some artists do this is because it's something they've drawn a million times, like a human face or human body and that's they're specialty. It took them years of practice before they can do that off the top of their head. And even then, they still use reference for certain things. There's no shame at all in using references. Here's an example, Disney artist Aaron Blaise. He has a channel as well on KZread. He worked on the Lion King and other films, the original hand-drawn animated ones. Imagine, he said he drew Nala (the female lion) around 90,000 times while making that movie. When he draws a lion nowadays, sometimes he using references, and sometimes he doesn't, depending on the outcome he's looking for. So even a well-established, artist who has drawn literally tens of thousands of lions, still uses references haha.

    Yes, practice, practice, practice! Practicing art is also helpful when one studies math. Art helps one develop seeing in three-D which in turn helps one see the solution to a complex math problem. Geologists need to be able to ‘see’ what is below ground level and how Mother Nature laid down layers of earth in order to decide where to drill for oil and gas. Without the ability to see in three-D making such determinations is almost impossible. Practicing art helps develop this ability. There is more to practicing art than just producing something pleasing to the eye.
