When I started watching your channel I had just gone through a huge crash with multiple larger tanks, and I had just started rescuing Bettas, some of them come to me REALLY sick and finding the info I needed was way harder than I ever thought it would be at the time. I almost quit then and I've wanted to a couple times since, but I found so much inspiration to keep going in your Betta videos. So now I've got a full house and it's not just Bettas, I'm taking on all kinds of fish and if everything goes to plan we'll have another turtle and a big pleco coming home with us today! Thank you for all the motivation, inspiration and reassurance!!

Some Bettas LOVE high flow, at least mine does. Before I put in a Soap dish to slow down the flow from my HoB, mine would would "ride" down the flow. He would swim up to where the water was coming down and slide down and do it all over again. Now that the dish is in there, he jumps in to it every morning after their feeding and splashes around. I used to scoot him out but he would just go right back in. I just let him have his "shower" now.

Lisa, I LOVED this video. What's more relaxing than watching gorgeous bettas and hearing you talk about them!?!! I have six aquariums: four bettas, tetras and goldfish. The only tank that gets a weekly water change is the goldfish. Everybody else gets topped off and changed probably twice a month. And my only other tip is to plant your tanks. Those water changes are usually to clean up detritus and algae. I hardly ever have tanks go above 5ppm nitrate because of all the plants.

If you're looking to do some blackwater setup(s), look for either pin oak or magnolia leaves. I've had both of those in my betta tank for five months and, while they're still breaking down, it's at a far slower rate than those of almond leaves. Still use almond leaves though. Bit of variety, which is good for him, and it looks nice.

Down to water changes every 2 months from once a week in my three 40-gallon planted tanks! I wish I could get vacuuming the house down to once every 2 months!!!! I love all the great advice in this video. For the first 1.5 years, I tested my tank and kept a detailed log, then changed the water 50% and made adjustments. I learned so much. I tracked nirite, nitrate, chlorine, ph, hardness, temperature, and ppm. Each tank had different rocks, bio load, and plantings. I found it fascinating that even though the tanks were the same size, same well water, filters, and lights, the test results could be wildly different in each tank. It became my own science class. When I found a problem, I'd look up helpful videos like yours to solve them, from that I've become a pretty good fish keeper I think. I've fine tune it all and now test once a week, top up the water but only do water changes every 2 months, even then I bet I could go much longer but strangely I like doing water changes :-) the house vacuuming not so much lol

In my experience, there are two kinds of bettas. One looks at the giant terrifying apex predator outside its little glass enclosure, and thinks "this is scary, I should hide!" The other looks at the same predator and thinks "I should fight it". They don't care an average person is 20 thousand times the size of a betta. You're in his territory, move over or face the consequences.

I struggle with Bettas and them living past 6 months. I have a 10 gallon, sponge filter, 79F heavily planted tank. In the beginning they are active and lively and playful and seem to be doing great. 6 months later they all tend to either bloat, pinecone or just wake up and they are dead. My concern is my water is too hard to keep bettas as the ph is around 7.6-7.8 and quite hard. I am sure this is the issue, and may try again and adjust the ph down and try again. We'll see.

I've seen the same issue, only they just up and die without warning. No bloat or pineconing. Active, eating, and interacting with me one night. The next morning, dead. Ack. Every time, zero ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and no spikes or crashes in pH/GH/KH. No fin damage or any other outward issues. Everything else in the tank does fine (shrimp, other fish) before AND after the betta dies. My water is like yours. 7.6-7.8 pH and a high GH/KH.

@@plantedlife It really seems like hit or miss. The thing that aggravates me is the I've known so many folks who've done everything "wrong" (including buying bettas from Petco/Petsmart and sticking them in tiny vases with minimal water changes and no cycling) who have bettas that live 2 or 3 years. Hard to convince them (or myself sometimes) that they're actually doing it "wrong".

It currently houses one powder blue dwarf gourami, one stray elephant ear guppy from a previous tank, a gold inca snail, and a bladder snail (usually a pest, but I don't mind 'em). Is that too much? If not, I really want to give the guppy a new friend/friends. Is that possible?

Great video as always. I am wary of the dragon scale type Bettas though. I had one of those Black Samurai Bettas (I think that is what the variety is called) in the beginning of the video. The silver coloration moved over its eyes and it became blind and eventually died. It is referred to as "Diamond Eye." Do you have any idea how to prevent it? I now have a Nemo Plakat for the last year and a half and he is doing great.

He seemed to be doing very well and grew in leaps and bounds. Once he reached a certain size, his tail and fins seem to split into strands. It looks more like a feather tail. There is no yucky/disease look to them. He still eats well and swims around when I come to the tank (in hopes of food). Is this normal? Thank you in advance

I always thought that objects in the tank break up the water as well. Bettas like plenty of plants they can swim around. Call me crazy but I like a 20 gallon long tanks for a single Betta fish. This allows for plenty of plants and hides. Plus you can put a small hang on back filter on one side of the tank and still have plenty of room for it to swim in. If the current is too strong. Also at sometime you decide to breed a pair. You will have room for that too.

Don't forget to check pH with your daily testing when exploring how often you need to change water. In smaller aquariums, all of the other parameters may look perfect, but the nitrification process can be using up the water's resources, and the pH can be dropping to unhealthy levels for your fish!

I'm with you there. I dislike brown/black water. Every time I see it, I cringe. I had a tank develop that because it's a riparian setup. I've been putting Purigen in the filter to get the nasty look out. A more recent setup has new driftwood in it, and it's starting to look brown, so I'll be adding Purigen to the filter in that one very soon. I know tannins are healthy for the fish and shrimp, but I really hate the way it looks.
