It happens every day at every airport around the world. This plane is very full and we ask that you check your carry on luggage. When one cruise passenger was asked to check her bag she did not realize it would coause her to miss a twelve thousand dollar cruise.

Last Air Canada flight I was on the flight attendants were taking the personal items bags out of the overhead compartments and directing the owners of the bags to put them under the seat in front of them. All my meds, electronics, travel documents, etc. never go in a carry-on bag, always my personal items bag.

I alway carry a backpack with paperwork, passport, medications on board, stowing under the seat in front of me.
I remember when the airlines didn’t charge for checked baggage and thus there was very little carry ons being brought on the plane. How I miss the good old days. Now it’s a complete cluster.

Exactly. Raise the airfare by $20 for everyone, and don’t charge for checked bags at all. Or, charge for carry-on luggage and make checked luggage free. The way they do things now is ridiculous.

This would not have solved the problem, if the checked bag got lost. Going back to a 70 Weight Limit would also help.
I never let my meds or travel documents out of my control and make sure that I am right there when they go through the x-ray
We recently started checking everything except a backpack with meds, travel documents, cash and credit cards, electronics, and one outfit. My husband has his C-Pap device bag. It is just so much easier to get on and off the plane without that carry-on rolling bag. We did the same thing on our last cruise, which made embarkation so much easier. I know luggage does get lost, but for right now, this is making our travel much simpler and easier, and if our luggage gets delayed, we will deal with it then.
Our first cruise ever (2004). The hotel shuttle driver (to the cruise port) stops at the first terminal (not our ship) and unloads the bags from the back of the shuttle, hands my bag (with all our passports, etc. in it) to some people (too dumb to see that it was not theirs) and they proceed to their ship with my bag. (Fortunately, I was smart enough to jump off the shuttle to watch out for just these types of screw ups). From that point on, my documents are always on my person, almost stapled to my underwear. Always anticipate the worst and take responsibility for your own things. Carry on all and happy cruising!
That's why I DESPISE for airlines to demand to take your bag! You are CORRECT.... THEY NEED TO STOP ALLOWING THE JUNK OVER HEAD ‼️‼️‼️
Meds and travel documents go in a tote that I put under the seat. Some people think the rules don’t apply to them.
What I’m hearing is that the flight crew need to do a better job of making people put their personal item under the seat in front of them and NOT allowing the overhead bin space to be occupied for those items.

I think it’s ridiculous to bring a carry on roller bag along with a backpack and then put both items in the overhead. However, I don’t think there is anything wrong if someone has a backpack and a backpack only and decides to put the backpack into the overhead. Everyone should be entitled to put one item in the overhead.

Airlines need to stop charging checked bag fees.
I get so tired of the people exceeding the limits on carry on items. I think the airlines should enforce their policies and make people with multiple carry on items pay to check or have to wait until all single bag passengers are boarded. Such an annoyance to be told I have to check my single carry on and I have to unload my necessary items just to see all the beach bag purses in the over head bin instead of under seats
Here's another tip: Use a USB FLASH DRIVE to store pictures of your documents (license, passport, trip tix, cruise docs, etc.) and put the drive on your key ring so you'll always have a copy on you in case of losing the paper docs like Don's describing... great hack!

My in laws had a similar situation in that Dad was carrying the bag and was asked to check it not realizing that it had all of moms diabetic test supplies and medicines! Bag got lost but thankfully they had time to get the supplies they needed before going to the cruise the next day. ALWAYS keep meds with you!
Good lesson to learn. So often we get rushed into handing that bag over.
From experience, traveling on a Hurtigruten trip, you don’t need much. It’s very laidback, but still very comfortable with great food. You don’t need fancy clothes. Keep your documents, medicines, etc. with you as hand luggage. Your clothes etc. can go as check-in luggage. Enjoy your travel along Norway’s coastline.
I always have my medication and documentation in my backpack and put it under the seat in front of me.
Medication & travel documents are always in my backpack with me.
It seems that most people nowadays take half of their household along as carry-on. 🤷

In Canada, we have a dispil which is about 18” high and 8.5” wide. “Dispill® is a multi-dose packaging solution that helps improve patients adherence to their medication regimen.” There are made up of 28 little plastic shells that has 4 shells per day and 7 rows for a week’s worth of medication. It is about 4-5 “ thick. It is too large to fit in a purse….so, carry-on suitcase, with jewelry and other important/valuable objects that I need on a cruise.

Mine is in a duffle bag
Great reminder on this information Don. Sometimes folks are exhausted with traveling and they space out on things. I carry a fat backpack that does fit under the seat in front of me and a carry on. Even did this on a three week trip to India. I do have in my carry on a foldable duffle that I can stuff full of souvenirs and then, on return, check the main bag (full of dirty clothes) and carry on my trip purchases and things in that duffle that I don't want to lose. Done a lot of travel over the years. You're the best Don. Thanks!
Meds and passport, if I have it, go in my purse and that is with my Cpap as carryon. Everything else goes in checked bag. Enjoy your cruise. Hope things are okay health wise.
My personal item (Male 65) is what I call a GO BAG. It's a small backpack with my laptop, cash, noise cancelling buds, tablet, cameras and our passports in a ziplock baggie. In case of emergency, it's under the seat and i can put it on and evacuate, there's no going into the overhead compartments. So far there's been NO emergency thank god.
Yes the airline always tries to get people to check that bag, but they ALWAYS tell you to also get medication & paperwork out of bag first!!!
Great lesson Dawn, thank you so much. Keep your medications and travel documents with you at all times.
Something like this happened to me. Boarding the plane with a small carryon and purse. I was told there was no more room for the carryon and I would have to have it put underneath the plane. Well, I take a lot of medications and panicked. So, I opened up the carryon, grabbed the gallon size bag that I had all my prescriptions in and told them that this has to go with me. They were okay with that. I didn't trust to have my medications out of my sight, and since then have always been prepared to do this again as it's amazing how much "carryon luggage" is brought on. Thanks for sharing!
I would never trust an airline telling me it WILL be there!!
Same with my west jet flight - they were taking small backpacks out of the overheads and asking whose is this and making them put it under the seat.
I bought an inexpensive men's fishing/camera vest that practically takes the place of a backpack. All those pockets are so useful!
Hey Don Hope you had a good travel day and enjoy your Alaska cruise, Good information and very important information for new cruisers.
That’s what I was thinking before you said it. I have asthma. So what if I need it while I’m in the plane??! So why would I not take it with me??! What’s wrong with this woman??! 🤣🤣
Excellent warning and advice
Coming back from my last cruise I volunteered to check my bag. When I arrived to my destination I had to retrieve my luggage from baggage claim like every one else. I would think long and hard before doing that ever again. The wait time at baggage claim was over 45 mins.
Welcome to Seattle! We live here and we brought the Majestic Princess from Sydney. I'm like you and just travel with a backpack and won't surrender it because of what it contains.
The other thing is my wife also uses a power scooter hoveround. To get around in the airports and on the cruise ship a few years ago the airline left her by her scooter in the airport after it had been gate checked it never made it on the airplane.
I had meds taken from my cabin. Suggest everyone puts in safe.

I feel so bad for her. I definitely take the important things in my under seat bag. So sad about the insurance too.
Never heard that before on flights here in Australia being asked for luggage to be put in checked. They are strict here with on board luggage and some times they weigh your cabin luggage before boarding. Maximum 7kgs
On one trip the plane was very crowded and they told my husband he would have to book his carry on and he basically carry a pharmacy, as he is a diabetic and takes insulin and various other meds and he no, this case never leaves me. They were so rude about it, but he kept saying, what if my blood sugar goes wild on the plane, I need the meds. Finally they stopped bothering him.
I did that on my way home from my last cruise and everything went smoothly. But in the future I’ll not do that on my way to a cruise or to somewhere that is time critical. Thanks for the warning.
We hear that all the time. When we travel I keep my "carry-on" with myself ALWAYS. Only I pull it, not my wife or children. That way I know exactly where it is at all times. The contense are too important. And I am now legally disabled so I get on the plane first.
Enjoy your trip
Yes, the airlines need to be sure only carry-on luggage is in overhead bin.
This drives me crazy! I saw it happen so many times and on Spirit the carry on bags cost money and people put their personal item up there for free. Ughh.
Always always carry meds and travel documents with me, not in my checked suitcase. Wish airlines would go back to free checked bags so there would be less heavy suitcases in the overhead bins.
Hello from BC, have a great trip
Another reason to go to the port a couple of days before the cruise
Taking the on board suitcase just happened to me returning from an AI trip from Cancun. Had too many souvenir bags. I was asked did I have any important items I needed to keep. All of my meds, passport, etc. were in my backpack, so they will ask, you just have to be alert. This was with American.
Keep up the good work don.
Thank you
Important stuff stays with you
What a nightmare not having your luggage arrive when you do. Thanks for the great travel tips.
Many years ago I was booked on a flight out of National in DC because there was a huge snowstorm moving in that was certainly going to cancel my flight. So I got to the airport early and just made it on to an earlier flight. Well the plane was already full so they made me check my carry on at the gate. Bottom line it was the last time I saw it. My guess is they put it on the ramp to load and it quickly was covered by snow and missed. Probably plowed into Potomac. From that I learned to have everything important on me or in a bag that fits under the seat.
How about the Jack Wagons who lay their coats and jackets in the overhead compartment. 😡

So how does a bag go missing from the the jetway to the cargo hold!! Amazing. We carry a travel bag that fits under the seat, it has my meds, my travel doc’s- passports, money and cruise documents. This bag never leaves my sight.
good advice
Years ago my family flew to San Juan to go on a Southern Caribbean cruise. I boarded the plane first. When we all went to get our luggage, mine was not there. I was so upset. It was during the time you could not carry any type of liquids on the plane but could be in a packed suitcase. I wore contacts then and my contact solutions were in my suitcase. My luggage was supposedly on the next plane and would be brought to the cruise port. We were about to cruise and on the muester drill and I was in a panic. We were walking back from the drill and saw my luggage. I was so glad. It did not make sense that all the other family members luggage made it but I checked in first and mine did not. You never know about airlines and this was years ago.
I only travel carry-on, whether it's a weekend or 6 weeks. I pay to board early so I know there will be room in the overhead bin. I find it rude when people put their personal item in the overhead bin instead of under the seat in front of them.

When you check your bag like this, there are a couple things that can happen. The gate checking that Don is describing is the vallet checking that often occurs with regional jet flights. For example, Bombardier CRJ-200, CRJ-700, and CRJ-900 aircraft actually cannot accommodate roller board bags in their overhead bins due to the size of the bins themselves and the wheels on the roller bags. This type of gate checking results in the bags being put on and taken off the aircraft at the departure and destination gates. The other type of gate checking, which is common on main line aircraft on a full flight, is complamentary bag checking to your final destination. In this case, the bag will be reclaimed at baggage claim at the passenger’s final destination. In this case, was this a vallet check for a regional jet, or was this passenger’s bag checked on to their final destination, resulting in them not having their medication on them when they got to their second gate. Either way, it’s still on them to get their medication out. When I travel, I routinely travel with medication for my kidney transplant along with 1 or 2 laptops. I also rarely check bags, as being blind, it’s easier to just have my carry on and not bother with baggage claim, which can be slow and cumbersome at times.
People go way too far bringing there carry on with them,! Airlines need to do a better job checking to make sure they are right sizes, and paid for. They are way to large to be a carry on all because they don’t want to pay for a checked bag.
I had the same thing happen to me but on my way back home. They asked for volunteers to check carry ons and I did but unfortunately my passport was in it. After making it to my final destination no bag . A few days later I got my bag back and of course my passport was missing . Lesson learned.
Fanny pack with inhalers, $, and travel documents on me always. Small backpack as my carry on and under the seat. I try to never put anything in over head. I am also 5'2" so hate lifting that high anyway

I'm sorry - I don't remember - what cruise ship are you on?
I keep important things in my purse.
I always keep my passport, a few days of meds, and cash/cards in a neck pouch. I don't take it off until I arrive at the ship/hotel. My reasoning is that if we should have to evacuate the plane, l won't be fretting about it and can get off quickly.
So sad for people when things like that happen!
Oh my goodness. My personals are in my purse held close to me
Yes always keep our medications with us. Even take extra in case there is a delay getting back home.
My last flight going from New Orleans to Dallas to Las Vegas the gal at New Orleans only checked it to Dallas not Las Vegas but because I had the air tag in it I knew exactly where it was a little inconvenient but I could see where my suitcase was. I will never fly now without an air tag.
Oh, Don. I take eleven prescription medications for my numerous conditions. They say to bring them in the original, labeled bottles. Some of these bottles are pretty big, as mail-order pharmacies tend to want to keep a very limited number of sizes. I need a one-gallon ziploc plus a one-quart ziploc for my meds. This is one reason why i need a good-sized backpack for a carry-on. It’s hard to deal with gate checking when you have to travel like this.

Pack a good size folding bag and move all essentials to it! We worry all time that they’ll want us to check our carry on and if I take essentials out I’m just moving the contents to a different bag! We did use the bags once, but that was because I had a bag 11lbs over. Since I pack in a packing bags it was an easy move. We then checked a different bag, southwest so there was no charge. Agent was amazed that I got that much weight out!

@@redhatbear1135 I th ink that medications should be an exception to the weight limit as we can't just go on the plane with just our meds and nothing else because of meds. Her own fault- End of Story!
Don, the cruise lines specify that meds brought on board must be in their original containers. The little packs that can fill for daily meds, am & pm, are great but don’t meet the rules. 🔆
If you ever consider using a gate-check for your carry on.....ONLY....ONLY....ONLY do that if you are on your return flight HOME! If it goes missing, at least you are at home where you should have sufficient backup supplies/equipment.
I saw u yesterday at pike st, around Starbucks reserve
I usually keep my inhaler in my pocket or my shirt pocket. I keep my carry on with me as well. I lost it twice. Now I don't give it up.
Don’t ever give up your meds!! My mom had lots of meds in her suitcase( insulin, diabetic monitor etc) and they would say you have to check that because we are full- take your meds out- it was all meds!! No argument!!
Sorry meds and jewelry are in my carry on. Right in the over head bin. Locked.
I always take them up on at the gate checking. BUT my medications and travel docs are in my backpack which never leaves me. And I will put the backpack in the overhead since it is my actual carry-on
Wow. Hard lesson learned.
Gate checked bags will not be at the gate unless you are on a puddle jumper that doesn;t have space for carry-on. The normal gate checked bag goes to the luggage claim so if you are in a connection situation, NEVER, gate check.
We pack light and don’t check bags. With the possible exception of on the way back.
People are missing the point... This person had everything on them, the airlines forced her to check. They are doing that quite often. It is easy to forget to grab EVERYTHING when you had no idea that they would take it!
What a nightmare! 😢
The first control has to be done by the gate agent who is not doing his job, they are the first filter avoiding the excess hand baggage, then the flight attendants.
I travel with a carry on duffle that also expands. It holds all medications and travel documents. I never give it up and it won't go under the seat.
