Don’t miss Undara Lava Tubes | Micro bats at dusk | Bush brekky

In this episode of ‪@nextleveloz‬ we head to the fascinating Undara Lava Tubes which is so underrated in our view. We'd always wanted to go when we lived in North Queensland but never went, so we couldn't miss it as we passed by on our way back from Cape York.
We now know what we were missing out on and reckon its a must include on your Lap or even short trip to Far North Queensland.
It really is an interesting and unique place and well worth including on your Lap list - and even if you aren't doing a Big Lap like us you can even visit there easily driving on sealed road 4 hours from Cairns for a short overnighter. We spent three days there, but make sure you spend at least two days and a night to get a good overview.
Yes it is a bit structured organised and yes you do have to pay for the tours - because you can't visit the lava tubes themselves without a guide, but we thought it was one of the great experiences of our Lap so far. In this episode we learned about the Wind Tunnel lava tubes, and how the tunnels were formed hundreds of thousands of years ago, we take in a bush Breakfast and see the fauna at last light, including tens of thousands of microbats heading out into the night sky.
We recommend the Wind Tunnel Tour if you have reasonable agility - there is a bit of rock scrambling and some rocky underfoot parts. It's not hard, but moderate fitness and steadiness is needed. Don't worry - if you think that might not be for you there is the Undara Archway Explorer tour with lots of similar information but a bit steadier underfoot with some more formed up walkways at a leisurely pace. And if you do nothing else extra try to fit in the Wildlife at Sunset tour as well - those microbats leaving the tube into the night sky are amazing - and the sunset with champas is a nice way to set the mood.
Welcome to Episode 40 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula @nextleveloz. Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.
This channel is for fun and to share our trip of a lifetime and 100% of any ad revenue earned goes to charity.
We'd love your comments, questions and tips. We hope you will like and subscribe and share the videos with others as we look forward to sharing our journey around this magnificent country.

G’day to you both. Love watching your episodes and the way you present them. So refreshing that you’re enjoying yourselves without the “sellathon” that is necessary for some but nauseating to watch. So good to see Paula get front and centre too. Thanks for what you’re doing 🙏

We really appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching. No sponsorships and we shoot it as we see it when we see it - which doesn't always work out of course 🤣. Paula is trying to do more front and centre. It's not easy so she's doing really well. Thanks again and because of people who enjoy our shares we also get to send some money off to charity which is great. All the best.

Thanks so much for watching and we really appreciate the feedback. We really enjoyed Undara. It wasn’t a rough road, remote adventure and sure it was a bit “domesticated” 😂, but it’s such a fascinating place and a good bit of pleasant relief for us after the Cape. And those microbats flying out into the night sky - where else’s can you see that and see geological wonders like the lava tubes in one place. Thanks again for watching out travels.

Great video of Undara. We also had a laugh about the "Aussie bush breakfast" when we were there. Very french sounding bushies. The Lava tubes are brilliant, and great seeing all those micro bats, thanks for the Vid.

Yes, a bit of petit déjeuner dans la brousse doesn't quite give that outback authenticity 🤣. We enjoyed Undara, but not surprised it's not quite as popular with many viewers. Thanks for watching and the feedback. Hope you're well.

Thanks for watching again and the. feedback. The kookaburras were everywhere. The Canon EOS R7 and them birds showing off made those easy. The bats are captured by the iPhone and a red light torch, which is pretty amazing given the poor light and just how tiny these micro bats are. Thanks again.

Hi Peter and thanks so much for watching our journey each week. This one certainly isn’t a test for the gear like the Gibb or the Cape - but the lava tubes and the local wildlife really are a fascinating part of our country. We reckon it’s an underrated Lap destination. thanks again.

Hi guys great vid again, this looks like a place to add to my travel list.. sorry about my last post, finally found a place to set up my tow bar and couldn't be happier. Have ordered the mirror mounts from UK can't wait for them as vision down side is limited as you mentioned, very impressed how it sits when it levels itself. Will be trying out the different tyre load settings and see how it runs, have you noticed any difference in light tyre load to heavy tyre load

Great that you’ve got all set up well. When towing i’m pretty much heavy load so that’s our default when towing except on sand or gravel/ corrugated. All the heady and light setting do is calibrate the TPMS to higher tyre pressures to deal with the heavier load. So while i do fleet to lighter load when aired down - you still get a warning to say tyre pressures are low and in my case i don’t extinguish the warning in that case - i leave the tyre pressure info live because if course it won’t give an additional warning if you have a deflation - if that makes sense? Thanks so much for watching and the questions, comments and feedback - we love it. cheers
