As a short a clumsy person, lowering the work space counter would be better than raising myself up. I would be sure to forget about it and fall off. 😆 Average height counters at our island have been the bane of my petite existence for 20 years. These are great ideas and I can't wait to apply some to our new house.

I love the idea of the filler strip pull out/down step stool but I only have fillers planned for the inside corners so they wouldn’t work there. Probably also wouldn’t work with my budget and some I’ve seen don’t hold adult weight and are just intended for children helping in the kitchen. But it’s a very cool idea!

Knife blocks are bacterial storage areas too. I have magnetic strips mounted on the wall for my knives and it is much easier to access them, you don't have to go digging in a drawer, and you are not using a nasty knife block.

As always, Mark, great ideas - especially the pull-out work areas and tables. As a short person those steps (even multiple steps) are still not high enough for me to reach a top shelf. I keep a stepladder near my kitchen to reach the heights. As for knife blocks, I did away with my knife set and kept only the few knives that I actually use. Then I bought a universal knife block by Bodum. It holds any knife, you can clean the inside pieces, and it takes up very little space on the counter (9"x3"). Other brands have bamboo or other materials if you prefer.

Hey, this gave me an idea! I currently have my knives in a drawer and my spices in 2 baskets in an upper cabinet. That flip-down flap (say that 10 times in a row) with magnet strips underneath an upper cabinet is entirely possible to do in my kitchen, so I think I'll do that, and then convert the current knife drawer to a spice drawer! My previous kitchen was an open kitchen, line+island. Luckily on one side the space between the island and the wall was less than the height of the island, so I made a flap of laminate countertop on that side of the island I could flip up when I needed some extra space while still having the other side of the island to get in and out of the kitchen. That flap ended up always staying up since the other side was the most convenient side to enter the kitchen anyways and the flap wasn't hindering anything, so I permanently converted the island to a peninsula by filling in the gap that side with a cabinet instead of just the countertop flap. Now I closed off the kitchen, making it a galley, and I chose to have more countertop space over tall cabinets, but the lost storage space is more than compensated by the upper cabinets over the countertop where the island used to be and the tall cabinet on the other side of the wall in the dining area. It seems a crazy idea to close off a kitchen in the 2020's, but it works so much better for me, and the next owner can easily open it back up again if they want, the beams are still there.

Older, golden years?!?!?! You young whippersnapper!! 😂 I have long thought about a lower pull-out countertop on wheels. I think that would be cool and highly functional for me if I'm kneading or rolling anything. I like some of the knife options too--a knife block is not a good solution to keep them sharp and they won't stay sharp in a regular drawer. The branch would be hard to reach, but they would stay sharp up there. Thanks Mark!

Love the toe kick drawers (with step up), pull out counters, and pull out steps. The latter two are new to me. While I like the idea of filler upper cabinet spice storage, in practice, I don’t like any of the spice storage solutions I’ve seen. ( I have 40 jars plus 5 or more overflow). Spices should be very easy access, light and heat protected, and instantly identifiable. I’m happy with my single layer 5x4 plexiglass jar rack (x2) w jars on an angle, lids labeled, although I’d consider a hidden spice storage if I found something I like. I don’t know any real cooks who use those giant knife sets. One lg butcher knife, one 8”, a serrated bread knife, maybe a fillet knife if you’re a major cook. Keep it simple.

Hey Mark, sweetie, - that first idea (extra counter-space) I will certainly use for our kitchen in the future cause it is THE BEST because small kitchen ;-(!!! And you can sit down on that roll out counter-space!! - One pull out seating area like on the video would be great in case I need to cut some veggies, cause I can not stand up for a long time!! Of course the next (connected) room will become the dining area but if you have to go back & forth every time that is also not good for me!! TOP IDEA, hun!! - Yep, wanna workstation but a simple one!! Love big sinks and this looks so handy!! - If I can affort it, I would love such a pull out unit for one of the top cabinets!! Such a stepstool is sadly enough to dangerous for me, because I am the champion of the clumsies 🤣 - O yes, want a knives storage solution for sure cause now it is dangerous (I grab into the knive sometimes cause it is just laying there in the drawer with the rest of the utensils!), I often have wounds on my fingers, cuts or burns, like I said, I'm a super klutz!!! So: MEGA TIP!!! - That space (toe-kick) is not for me!! Bending down and I fall over, so a no-go!! Maybe good idea for my husbands stuff (but not toe kick!! cause I bump in to those things a lot of the time haha!) - Yep, I'm a spice-girl HAHAHAHA, so this is certainly something for my new kitchen!! And I want them nearby the hob (and I want a induction plate instead of gas stove this time!!!) That drawer-insert is not big enough for all my spices & herbes!!! Rather have that pull out- pull down system! FAB TIP!!! - I would also like to 'hide' certain appliances so that they are not always visible on that countertop. Thanks so much, dear, you are amazing!!! Lots of love to you and the family from old rebel-Pinkie

Every time you say “pushing 50” or “over 50” , it makes me laugh and grit my teeth at the same time. Probably saying “over 70” would be more apropos in this day and age when people live and are active into their 90s. My dad rode his bike all over our small city until he was 94. We will most likely do a major kitchen remodel in the not-too-distant future. With all your wonderful ideas and suggestions, I look forward to not having small appliances and ‘stuff’ on the counter tops but stored efficiently and readily accessible at the same time.

3:27 I keep imagining that lady taking that heavy, hot whatever-that-is out of the top oven and missing the footing when she steps down. Happens to the best of us. Anybody who says "You can't fall off the floor" lacks both imagination and familiarity with Murphy's Law and its corollaries. 3:31 That one looks even higher.
