In this video, I'll taste my way through 4 different Banana Liqueurs with a bonus from the Tropical Standard book. While there are many more out there in addition to these 4, these are by far the most common and available near me and that might not be the case for you. Most modern recipes will call for Giffard or Tempus Fugit.
Giffard Banane Du Bresil Liqueur
$33-$35: Simply the best. It has a nice ripe banana flavor without being overripe.
Tempus Fugit Crème de Banane Liqueur
$35-$40: It's very good and will sub in for any banana liqueur, but I still prefer the Giffard and it's not that close.
Drillaud Banana Liqueur
$20: If you like the taste of pure artificial banana, this one is for you!
99 Bananas
$10: Might be better than the Drillaud, but still not a comparable substitute for the Giffard or Tempus Fugit. Probably some of the best value for pure ABV for any liqueur or spirit

Love these kinds of videos, they're so informative and helpful.
Giffard is just straight up the best liqueur brand on the market. They make so many different flavours and they are all great!
Giffard definitely has the most pure banana flavor. Tempus Fugit is good, though to me me, it tastes more like walnuts in banana bread, than actual banana.

You're right, TF does taste a like banana bread.
That shirt... perfect. Just a note - the Tempus Fugit stuff is good in iced coffee drinks. I tried it on a whim and it was really good, even just a tablespoon or two in a 16 ounce drink. :)

I've been on a big "banana in tiki/rum drinks" kick and have had TF for several months... adding it to iced coffee never occurred to me. This bottle is gonna be gone much quicker now I think after this inspiration!

@@tbparnell47 would love to hear if you like it, it was an odd thing I just did one morning and it was tasty without being enough for me to consider it "drinking" (not that there's anything wrong with _that_)
I love the fluffy banana drink too, I changed it up a bit and used some chocolate bitters instead and it's quite delicious. It taste like one of those frozen chocolate bananas.
I bought a bottle of the Giffard last week to be able to make some of the cocktails recently posted to this channel. Feeling validated on that purchase 😅
The Gros Michel still exists, it's just no longer commercially viable. You can buy them, both the bananas and the plants themselves.
I’m here to defend the Tempus Fugit. Giffard is the clear winner, but I like the tobacco and leather notes I get out of Tempus Fugit. It definitely tastes darker, and I agree with Derek’s description of overripe banana flavor in it. As I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I keep on hand a banana rum blend with Jamaican rum, Smith & Cross, and either the Giffard or Tempus Fugit liqueurs - they’re different but both are great.

Tempus Fugit is not bad. Especially in a cocktail. It's just one of those things where side by side I thought they'd each have their own uses an while I'm sure someone can make that argument, I just like everything about Giffard better.
I did this same test awhile ago, but my low-end was dekuyper. That one is also just banana runts with alcohol. For me, the ripeness of the tempest fugit made it the clear winner. Nothing wrong with Giffard, except I thought it was too pricey for my enjoyment of it vs. either of the others (I love banana runts).
Here in Brazil we have several banana cachaças, which we call “bananinha” (little banana). They are very sweet, so you can drink them without feeling too much alcohol, however, as they are cachaça-based, they contain 37-40% alcohol and get you drunk VERY, VERY quickly. They're usually just for shots, i've never seen anyone doing cocktails with it though.
I recently threw away a bottle of 99 bananas and 99 apples that I had on my shelf for 10 years. My only regret is now I would have to buy another bottle of 99 bananas if I wanted to make that liqueur from Tropical Standard. I haven't tried the Giffard, but in cocktails I love the Tempus Fugit.
Can't find anything near by so I made my own
Tastes similar to the Circus Peanuts candy.
This video hit a little too hard, I bought the Drillaud's at Total Wine because... just like you said I thought it's also French, might be a competitor since they didn't have Giffards, and I've never tried a Banana Liquor before. It's very disgusting. Like insanely chemically disgusting, every cocktail was terrible with it. Like you said responding to a comment "I just wouldn't drink Banana cocktails if I had to use Drillaud's. Thank you for all the work you do. Channel doubled subs since I joined last year, keep it up sir.

Thank you! Only wish I could have delivered the news sooner. Most the other Drillaud I’ve had has been serviceable, just not the banana.
Giffard Premium label has one of the best fruit liquors out there…Caribbean pineapple is also amazing
@evijade1
Ай бұрын
Thanks I’ll try the pineapple too!
I'm also chiming in here to say I got Giffard after seeing your Dr. Barca's Fluffy Banana video. The last time I got 99 Bananas was in college when I was naïve (and poor). 😆🍌

Not too long ago 99 Bananas was the only widely available option. It's very indicative of the late 90s early 2000s cocktail culture.
Love Tempus Fugit - but I’m all for baking spice notes. Really looking forward to those Mai Tai riff videos!
Just so you know, creme de banana is $120 in Australia

Great video idea! More tasting comparisons please!
Banana justino (per your own video!) with Rum Bar Gold is the best banana liqueur I’ve had yet. I really like Banana Bunch for its own distinct, powerful, and IMO quite worthwhile use. In fact adding a splash or two of 99B to justino (ironically) corrects the balance quite ably.
For me the Drillaud is $24 vs Giffard $43 vs Tempus $53. I would love to see how they differ in a cocktail. I don't think most ppl will be drinking these neat.

I wouldn’t even want to try. I’d rather just not make banana cocktails if my only option was Drillaud. I’d choose 99 Bananas instead.

It’s worth spending more in this case, and a bottle will last a loooooong time. I usually go for Giffard
Hahaha ..just bought some Giffard. I'll stick with that thanks... Love the shirt!!🍌🍌
Joseph Cartron and Edmond Briottet both make a bana liquor, I haven't tried them, but I have used many other liquors from both companies and they are both top notch quality.
Love the Banana Shirt
here in Europe you find a couple of other brands too, like Bols, Cobana, Nordpol, De Kuyper, Monin ,,,, would be nice if you would extend your preview one day ...
Mmmm banana liqueur!! Great review
Tropical Standard's based off 99 bananas and Trader Joe's freeze dried bananas is heaven in the right cocktails (like the Banshee)!
I actually prefer the taste of tempus because of the overripe dessert flavor. But the Giffard is better in certain cocktails.
Great overview. Yep, giffard is my favorite, but I really like TF as a sweetener in my Rum Old Fashion...just a barspoon. I will have to give the 99 Bananas trick a try. You can never go wrong with any recipes in TS. I've been making banana rum/liqueur using rum, fresh banana, and pectin-X. Some dude did a video on it...can't remember who. It tastes amazing, like an actual banana. The only problem is that is has a shelf life of two weeks before it goes flat. If I could only find a link to that Banana Justino video.

Some loser, I'm sure!
My favorite is the Giffard , then the Tempus Fugit. I hate the Drillaud and the 99! I too tried the Drillaud trying to save money, but as the saying goes, you get what you paid for!
For me, iits Giffard, hands down. It tastes like actual banana, and has an almost banana bread flavor.
I couldn’t stomach the Drillaud and tried cutting the amount in half with recipes that called for a banana liqueur, sadly had to pour probably 3/4 of the bottle down the drain and will be going with Giffard or Tempus Fugit.
I make my own banana liqueur and this is my favorite drink to use it in. I believe this is a drink served on Disney Cruise lines. Jamaican Rum Runner 2oz Bailey's Irish Cream 1.5oz Appleton Signature Rum 1oz Creme de Banana 1oz Cream of Coconut 1oz Pineapple *Mix in blender with a cup of ice and blend

Good to know, I would’ve probably gone with Drillaud because I actually don’t mind their orange liqueur
Giffard and a Canadian brand called McGuinness are the only banana liquors available to me. How does the Banane de Bresil compare to the basic Creme de Banane from Giffard?
@adamparker5467

The Giffard is the best thing out there and has a clean and rich banana flavor, but I also like the Tempus Fugit with its notes of leather and tobacco. I sometimes make a banana rum mix with Jamaican rum, Smith & Cross, and either the Giffard or Tempus Fugit liqueurs - they’re different but both work.
Tempus fugit is not sold in my area sticking with giffard
Howlers head is a legit banana whiskey it comes highly recommended
The only higher end banana liqueur I can get in my local market in East Texas is Joseph Carton Banane,25% abv, made in France. Have you tried that one?

I recently succumbed to its cheap price and bought some Drillaud. Sadly, I thought its artificial taste was off putting at first, but in a cocktail, it doesn't have the presence I was hoping for in a banana liquor.
I would say Tempus Fugit especially for Rum cocktails and tiki. Giffard is great but not a funky Banana bread flavor I like more. Giffard does have a reputation of making crappy products and I do not forgive them for that. I actually do blend both Giffard and Tempus equal parts to get a blend of the clean and funky flavors
@doomduck9826
Ай бұрын
Gonna second this - in cocktails, I had a better time with the Tempus Fugit. It seemed to add more of the flavors I was looking for. Would love to see a cocktail-off version of this video comparing the Tempus Fugit and Giffard!
I'm glad you tried all them so we don't have to lol
Crazy, the Giffard is 15 euro here in Germany which is the lowest range of prices for liquors. The tempus fugit is 30 euros. I bought the tempus a year ago because I thought the giffard can’t be good for that price point. I love the tempus but after comments here the Giffard seems better for cocktails. The Tempus pure has the flavor of baked banana with honey in Asian restaurants which I love, but I can’t notice much banana flavour in my cocktails with it
@makeanddrink
Ай бұрын
Not sure the full difference but Giffard does have another banana liqueur that comes in a different bottle. These ones with the white label and plain bottle are the more "premium" liqueurs.
None of them taste great on their own. What I’ve started doing is blending Tempus & 99 in cocktails. It allows for a more realistic flavor bolstered by the banana candy flavor you enjoyed as a child. They make each other better somehow.
How bad is Bols compared to this?
@tularjaggs334
