Yes, you can. Best way to clean them is by using a cloth that's dampened with water and soap.
one, title is dumb. two, your head must be filthy. three, the ear cup side does matter. look at where the hole is on the ear cups. they are on opposite sides
Left right does matter for the sensor to work

You've got a point. The main purpose of the video though wasn't to explain how the airpods won't work if you lose the ear cushion. It was to make you aware of the fact that replacing them can be quite expensive.
