You can also just lock the empty latch closed so the lever can't be slipped into it. Some one could still tie things in place to block the door but that's when you crawl out the hole in the floor.

HI DPB .308, If you just place that bar across the door you can tie it with string and it makes it hard to open from the inside. It has a lot of leverage. Thanks for watching and I like your handle.

Great idea with the handle and spring latch. I also used barrel bolts on the inside of my cargo trailer, but I attached the bolts above the door about 6” in from door pulleys. The bolts drop down into holes in the top frame of the door. The latches don’t become trip hazards and someone could use a six foot pry bar and never get into the rear door. I will definitely be adding the extra clasp to lock the side door open. Look forward to checking out more of your videos.

Everyone is saying how it was a difficult task and it turns out to be quite a lengthy process. On my camper shell the door closure was a real bad idea by someone and yes I got locked in when someone push the outside handle into the indented space. So as soon as I got back from the camping trip I had to fix that problem. I used a piece of left over 3/4" plywood and cut it into a little square and glued it into the space so that the handle nolonger could drop into the recessed plate. I also put a lock on the inside of the door so I could lock it when I went in to sleep.

I guy I used to hang out with once in awhile in the 80's went on to become a police officer. A few months after he was no longer considered a rookie and was allowed to patrol alone he was doing a police report at a construction site near the end of the day about some stolen tools. After he got done with the report he needed to take a crap bad. He hit one of the porta potties on the site, heard someone jiggle the door outside but thought it was just someone else trying to open the door and didn't see the occupied indicator. When he was done he found himself locked in it after the site had closed down for the day. Someone on the site as it was shutting down had padlocked it from the outside. Those doors are flimsy so he bent the door open toward the bottom and tried to crawl out. He got stuck, was struggling, tried to take his duty belt off and "somehow" managed to shoot himself in the ass. He got on the radio on a secure channel, told dispatch what happened and he needed assistance and an ambulance. He also asked that this be kept on the down low and he was not severely injured. Of course dispatch blurted out on the multi agency non secured channel, "Shots fired officer down!" Every law enforcement agency in the area rolled to the site including a couple of under cover Feds in the area and two police choppers just to find him stuck and wounded half in and out of a porta crapper. They got him out and to a hospital and managed to keep the incident out of the media. He recovered in a few days since it was just a deep grazing wound and powder burn and was back on the job. He earned a nickname though. Outhouse. That stuck with him to this day and was even his code name years later after he became a detective and later retired. I've forgotten his real name. Everyone just calls him Outhouse.

Been thinking of that myself, for the back ramp door, old window cam locks near where the cable attached to the door, about chest high, no rattling on the road like a barrel lock, for the side door, been looking at that frame vertical frame. Thinking of a hasp to hold it open, the twist style hasp, working on that yet.

Our barrel locks fit pretty snugly so there is no rattle. I don't know if Rick did that on purpose or it just worked out that way. Thanks for watching, Dave.

I camp out of a 24’ enclosed trailer because we either have our Jeep or side by side with us. I wanted to put an RV style lock like you did and was told by 2 different shops I couldn’t do it on my door. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel or buy a new door as was suggested I forgot about it. My wife saw this vid and really jumped my case! Could you do a vid on how you installed the RV door lock, if you already have one in your library what is it’s title? Thanks for another great vid even though I received a lecture!

That lock gave me fits and I don't have a video on it ( it was before my YT days). It really isn't that hard but I was looking at it the wrong way I guess. I'll see if I can address that installation and show how to do it (and how NOT to do it!)

We have a regular trailer ( fifth wheel with a kitchen in back I pull the window and put in a master cool evap cooler. On low setting it pulls 225 watts I can run it on my solar pannels and it works fine also my small gennerator 600 watts or my inverters. Before that we had a little swamp cooler that was a mechanics unit again direct drive they pull less than a RV heater motor and cool like crazy

At work, all walk-in coolers have a no lock-in feature. We ran that latch bolt all the way thru the door to the inside with a wing nut or pin with a key you could pull if you were locked. Another idea is you could latch the buckle without the arm so you could not latch into the buckle.

If you are ordering a new cargo trailer, you can order it with an RV door. We ordered our United trailer with a screen and regular double RV door. No industrial lock to deal with. We ordered ours with no back cargo door and added windows right from the factory. Took loads of weight off the total.

I really like the idea of no rear door for the extra things you can do back there like you mentioned. If I didn't need to haul the ATV once in awhile I'd have mine the same.

I have a side door with same factory set-up ... I always put the lock back in the hasp in the locked position with the bar left hanging and the floor to roof swinging bar rotated fully open .... haven't been bothered as of yet because most people assume when they see the lock that trailer is already locked from the outside ... they never seem to make the connection that the bar is not in the proper place ... I have told friends about this when standing right in front of the door and they are always surprised when I show them the trailer is unlocked ... so far so good.

  • @gonagain

My thought is that, even with the lock on as you describe, the bar could be drawn across and tied with string and a person inside wouldn't be able to get out. Try it and see if I'm right. It would be a dirty trick for someone to pull, but there's some sneaky individuals out there.

@@gonagain I have thought of that .. but I guess it depends of where you are ... I do still like the lock in hasp with appearance of being locked ... I even considered getting a vinyl wrap sign company to make me up a "Made to Scale Bar" to stick on the door where the actual bar would fit ... from a few feet away with the lock in hasp it would look pretty convincing.

I drilled out the rivet and replaced it with a 1/4 bolt and a wing nut. I run the bolt from the inside and the threads exposed, and screw on the wing not. At night time, I unscrew and remove the entire handle and place inside (next to my shotgun😬) and I installed a heavy duty slide lock on the inside that secures the door. With the bolt installed from inside out, you can’t get it out / off when the arm is in the locked position. At most... someone could take the wing nut... but can’t remove the bolt. I do like the idea of drilling a hole in the frame to allow an inch or so of ventilation, awesome hack!!! I’ll be doing that soon. One other thing I did... I installed several door “peep holes” like in your residential/ hotel doors. I put them inline with the screw holes, so they blend in very well. It’s not until I point them out to folks that them find em. I have one on each side. No need to pull back curtains to look out the windows... happy to send pics if need be.
