I think the reason the whole drill-sergeant 'break 'em down to build 'em up' routine gets to me is thanks to my upbringing. My whole family on my father's side is military, going back at least three generations that I've been able to confirm, so I've seen firsthand what becomes of the people who go through that hell when they try to return to civilian life -- even when they no longer have an enemy to fight, they've been conditioned to act as human weapons, so there's this instinctive combativeness even in mundane domestic settings. I'm the first son in my family going back to my grandfather's generation who was ineligible for military service from the off (myriad health issues, both physical and psychological, that Grandpa Harold would've called "4F"), but even though that freed me up to pursue my own interests in college, I still catch flak for not passing muster. Military life takes regular people and turns them into monsters, solely for the purpose of fighting against the monsters that the other side trained up -- basic human empathy is something that just doesn't _survive_ that kind of sustained trauma. I recognize and appreciate the service of those who put their lives on the line to defend their homes and families in war, but... I can't stop seeing the costs of becoming a soldier.
