JB, just bought one of these. Had the discussion with the dealer since the lower ratings made 0 sense given the truck is essentially mechanically identical to a 3500. Dealer ended up calling GM to ask. They stated the truck is the same as a 3500. They lowered the ratings specifically to avoid customers having to pay higher taxes as well as being required to register their truck as a commercial vehicle in states like Arizona. They kept the GVWR and payload/towing capacity low to avoid this. But the truck is very much capable of towing the same as a 3500 SRW, and with similar payload. Now, who knows whether this is 100% true or not (after all the words came from a dealer), but it does make sense from a mechanical standpoint. If it is true, props to GM for helping us stick it to the tax man. Maybe you could call GM and get their take so the rest of us can know?

Thanks for covering the Max Trailering Pkg v a 1 ton...always a detailed compressive review
Jerry Seiner did an amazing job to get me the exact truck I wanted. I drove to South Jordan from Colorado (outside Denver) to get my AT4 last week. They really came through! Tanner and Skyler are great guys!
The 12k conventional towing only is wild! A salesman told me the truck he had on the lot with this was a mistake... I think not. Gotta watch these numbers for sure. Another fantastic video (and catch!) Happy 4th!
Really good, informative video man!
Just get a 3500, same frame, same suspension and 12100 GVWR plus you get 20s. I like how you hit what exactly this package is.

Becareful w that as now many insurance companies will not personally insure a truck w 12k gvwr or higher which is why I went w a 2500 w an 11350 gvwr ;)
The bureaucracy didn't know there would be a problem with the max trailer add on to the AT4. Great job spotting the problem.
Great job as usual. Thank you for these videos.
impressive review. Keep up the good work!
That’s weird they do that for the AT4. I guess they are trying to keep the more aggressive tires because I’m pretty sure an AT4 with 20s has atleast the option for the new BFG tires. Anyways for anyone that’s wondering why this package exists and/or the guys saying just get a 3500, here’s the reason: a 3500 GM SRW truck will have a minimum GVWR of 12,100 pounds. If you’re a business owner/operator and you’re using that truck to tow a trailer with a GVWR of 14,000 (very typical weight for an equipment trailer) you will have to have a Class A CDL because your GCWR exceeds 26,000 AND the trailer GVWR exceeds 10,000. That was a complaint from people with the 3500s starting in 2020. So now if you get a 2500 with the max tow package your typical GVWR will be 11,750 (short bed) or 11,900 (long bed) and that will keep you under 26,000 pounds GCWR with the typical 14,000 GVWR equipment trailer. So no CDL and you still have the benefits of a 3500 SRW with the 12” ring gear and overload leaf springs. Now the driver would still need a medical card (DOT card/physical) since the GVWR of the truck exceeds 10,000 pounds but that has always been the case for 3500 trucks unless they were derated to 10,000 which for 2020+ is not an option for a GM 3500. And the other part is for non commercial users that live in states that require special registration and/or non commercial Class A license. This is a way to still get the benefits of a 3500 SRW but to beat the government out of getting more money from you basically.

@@BSTatonka thanks. I’ve had a cdl for about 18 years now for my job so I know how the laws are. It’s all money racket and this is a good way for owner/operators to get around having to pay to get a cdl. And in my state of KY it is a major process to get a cdl now.
Still a good payload for a 2500. Totally agree with your assessment of who should buy this truck!🇺🇸🇺🇸
@jb Reviews , I just purchased a 24 AT4, love the truck. Did you notice the DEF Injector noise when the engine warmed up? I thought I had a bad valve, but took it too 2 different diesel mechanics (one being a GM) and they said it was normal to hear that..

JB great videos! You have mentioned in other videos and this video that there is different frames between the 2500 and 3500. I have not seen any info stating that the frames are different. The only info that I have seen is that the rear leaf springs are different between the two and nothing else. Is there something you know of that makes the frames different? Thanks
Love the look of this truck!
Someone at GM didn’t catch this. I think it just boils down to the mud tires not having enough capacity. The 11900 gvwr on the long bed is perfect because you can tow a 14,000 pound gvwr trailer and stay under the 26,000 gvwr where you need a cdl. GM has a great idea here they just need to offer different tires.

Honestly, thinking 15+ years ago, I remember I went in to a Ford Dealership with my dad. He asked the salesmen what is the difference between F-250/3/4/550… and the guys literally said… “Leaf Springs.” It even applied to the commercial 650/750 chassis. Lol

I can't vouch for back then but salesman do not know their vehicles. I can ask the same questions at 4 different dealers and get 4 different answers. Most only know how to sell a car and some can't even do that right. I wouldn't even take a sales managers word for anything on the vehicle unless he shows me the source of his info.
They lower the towing capacity to 12000 if you get the QG3 tire package . My 2024 SLT had these mud tires and it lowered the conventional trailer weight to 12000 lbs.
I am thinking of buying a ‘24 3500 l8t SRW but wanted to clarify something. Do you need the “20 wheels to get the 16k conventional towing rating? Or do the 18” wheels still get you to that rating as well?
Enjoy that cloumn shifter I hate the car shifter in my 3.0 duramax!
I ran into this same issue when I bought my 2021 Chevy 2500HD with the midnight edition. The midnight edition came with the same Hankook tires and 18" wheels. Imagine my disappointment when I got my new truck home and checked the door sticker to see it was only rated at 12K max trailer weight. Shame on me for not checking before I bought it. It's a shame that GM chose a tire that derates the towing capacity of a fully capable truck by 6k lbs. A comparably equipped 2500 without those tires can tow 18K lbs. First thing I did was replace those tires. I know this doesn't change the the towing capacity but at least I know the truck itself can tow more than what the door sticker states. My bumper pull toy hauler has a GVWR of 12,800 lbs. I haven't weighed the trailer but I'm sure Im pushing the 12K max of the truck if not over but again, I know the truck itself is capable of the full 18K lbs without those Hankook tires. The truck tows my trailer with ease.
Did you try tilting the steering wheel all the way down so the column shifter wouldn’t block the screen as much?
You nailed this! I am confused, I own a 2021 GMC 2500 HD Duramax Denali 20" wheels Plow Prep and Camper package Not Max Tow my conventional tow rating is 18500 Gooseneck 17700 LBS GVW 11300 sooooo why is this max tow only 12K? How odd!!! My Payload is 3075 standard bed. My GCWR is 26000
I'm looking at a 24 Silverado or Sierra 3500 HD with fifthwheel package, which do you think will pull a new 41RKDB Mobile Suites the best. The numbers will be pretty close.
Your discussion of price vs. features is kind of funny considering that the Denali Ultimate trim doesn’t even have a power adjustable/telescoping steering column. LOL
How about the fact that they relocated the trailer brake controller from center of dash to center console where drivers side cup holder was ? Or that they deleted the 12v receptacle from the dash ? Or they they moved the 4x4 selector down and to the right and now I smack my knee on it when entering the vehicle ? All these things was why I opted for a 23 after test driving a 24 AT4
JB is that frame painted or wax coated? That shot of the leafs looks like paint.
A simple fix for the screen would be for Gm to move screen up and vents below.
I prefer manual mode so it can be driven like a manual shift except without clutch. 🙂
Very interesting
Great video JB. I couldn't agree more with your talking points. If you're going to spend that kinda money, you may as well step up and get the 3500hd and have the payload capability. BTW, the rims on that AT4 are hideous.

That truck makes absolutely no sense. Heck even my gasser is rated higher for conventional towing. I totally agree JB, that truck is a hard pass. Now you said something about it having the 1 ton frame. I've never read where there was a difference in the frames, only suspensions. That is a new one on me. I'll have to do more research on that. Very strange to add heavy springs and frame and the big 12 inch ring gear and then reduce capacity, makes no sense. I don't mind 18 inch wheels because you can run a 295/70R18 and have 4080 lbs capacity per tire and a tire that is 34.5 tall and cheaper than the 20's
I would venture to guess that this wasn't intentional. They should just remove the max tow from the AT4 version. Same as how they do with the trail boss with chevy.
Lmao, I always buy a 2500 speced with the heaviest spring package avalable, ie, snow plow package and camper package, making it a 3500 SRW while insuring a 2500, same frame, same overload springs, just a decal saying its a 2500 HD .

Good thing the raptor isn’t a 3/4 or one ton platform. Took for how many years to finally put a supercharged v8 in the raptor. Calling it the raptor r. Still prefer the TRX. That’s a bad machine. As far as GM and the new platform hd trucks. They still lack in the hp and torque. The Super Doots' optional 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine returns for 2023 model year service with its 475 horsepower and 1.050 lb. -ft. of torque at the ready. However, it's now joined by a new High Output variant that cranks the volume up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb. I love the fit and finish on the GMC OVER FORD. wish they put that kinda of attention on the Chevy Silverado platform. I’ll be trading my Chevy for the new GMC soon.

I come from a huge family of truck drivers as well as myself being one for years. There’s a lots of love here with this truck I’ll tell you what keeps me driving a Ford, One word, Visibility , Drive a Ford and then drive this truck. These trucks have become borderline dangerous ,I don’t know who at is Gnm decided the front end of this truck should be five feet tall, it’s ridiculous. You could run over a teenager and not even know it ,the high belt line of these trucks, Combined with a very high hood, and one that does not roll off it’s very squared off, compared to the lowered beltline of a super duty Greatly improved Visibility, And the much lower leading edge of the hood, Ford has a much better view out the front and sides of the truck. I don’t care how many cameras you ahead you can’t look at any of them driving the truck forward and you shouldn’t be.There’s no comparison ,I have three of these new 2023 Chevy’s at work you can’t even check the oil without a ladder with at least two steps. The hood is so high and the engine is way down in the engine apartment. When I park these new trucks next to our older ones, it’s disgusting how tall they made these trucks and for a what? It just creates more wind drag it makes it harder to work on the truck. They didn’t even give it any more ground clearance. I’m very frustrated, because otherwise, I love these trucks. I much prefer the IFS front end , The GM trucks simply drive so much better than a Ford or Ram, They don’t wander on the road or require constant correction like a solid axle truck does.

Lololol, let’s see, pedestrian wearing, cross traffic warning, 360 HD vision….no, there is zero vision problem with the GM’s. The camera comment is just ridiculous.if you need a camera driving down the hwy, then you don’t need a truck period. Save a life, drive a mini. The front end alone make the ford and ram look two decades behind the times along with the same body style for way too long. Now drive a ‘24 HD AT4x (had a 22 HD AT4, and there is zero vision issues with all the available sensors and cameras. As for being too short to check the oil w/o a ladder or see over the window seal, oh well, you should’ve been 6’4”. It’s no issue for me. It’s cool though, to each his own
Might as well just buy a 3500...
It's a bit wierd how you make up facts that are simply wrong. If you configure a Ford and a ram and a gm truck as close as possible the gmc is way more expensive. I built this truck on the gmc site and came out to$86k. Built as similar as possible at ford for $78k...
Agreed you get better bang for your buck with GM vs the competition. That said, people buying these trucks are so brand loyal (blind), it won’t make a difference. GM will still be third because of that.

Third place in what exactly? Sales?
GM WILL HAVE 80 SPEAKERS 2025 LOL
This truck was such a let down. Still shitty brakes shitty exaust brake that ppl try to justify that it works. My 24 has been in the shop 2 weeks already to replace motor mounts. Just placed a order for a 24 superduty . Can’t wait to get rid of this hunk of 12mpg shit
You can’t compare this truck to a 23 F350 diesel. I have owned both a 24 GMC 3500 Duramax and a 23 F350 Power Stroke absolutely destroys the GMC. My 350 checks every box and the GMC left me wanting more for my money. The reason why the Ford cost more money is because it’s worth it!
I bought the 24 at4 duramax 6.6l I love gmc but this is like Chinese trash.
Just don’t buy a 2500 ever. Piss poor payloads.
General Motors downfall is vehicle over 80,000 miles, gm electronics and air conditioning is weak and go out, bad ac, cruise control goes out, turn signal goes out. Great trucks, just sell by 80,000 miles

You can guarantee it’s for registration and commercial usage purposes. For commercial use it will keep the truck and a 14,000 GVWR trailer under 26,000 GCWR weight which won’t require a CDL. And then for states that have non commercial CDL requirements and special truck registration it will skip that too. A 3500 would not.
and more englisher?
