2024 Silverado 2500 HD and 2024 Sierra 2500 HD Max tow...what is it? why? worth it?

Here is the meat and potatoes behind the Max Tow Package from silverado hd and sierra hd trucks for gthe 2024 2500 series trucks. Is it worth it, absolutely, is a 3500 now, well yes and no, but here is what you need to know.
Thans for being here.

I have a 2024 Silverado 2500HD with the Max Tow Package, and from what I can tell the only reason why GM has this package with the exact same capacities as the 3500HD SRW (Single Rear Wheel) is to take advantage of a loophole in the vehicle registration laws. In many states (including where I live), if you own a 3/4-ton truck you can sign a waiver stating you are not using it as a commercial vehicle, which you CAN'T do with a 1-ton truck. This lowers your registration fees from the higher "commercial" rate to the lower "private" rate. So by keeping this truck under the label of 2500HD I can qualify for the lower registration cost yet still get the capacity of the 3500HD SRW. As far as I can tell, when I spec my truck out online as either a 2500HD with Max Tow or a 3500HD SRW, everything is the same - including the cost - except for the "2500HD" and "3500HD" badges. YMMV.

Nice video. I just watched the other video a few minutes ago and the one guy busting you up is just wrong. For 2024 the max tow 2500 mechanically is exactly the same as a 3500 SRW. They have the same rear axle (12” ring gear) with the same weight rating, same leaf spring package with the overload springs and the front axle and suspension is exactly the same even if you get a dually. The front axle rating solely depends on if you have the standard front end, HD front springs/Camper package or snow plow prep package. So with all that said it is my opinion that GM is offering this 2500 max towing package solely for the guys needing/wanting the 3500 rear suspension and 12” ring gear without having to get the 3500’s 12,100 (it may be 12,200 I can’t remember right off) GVWR. The reason that’s important is if you’re towing an equipment trailer it will almost certainly have a 14,000 GVWR rating and previously (2020-2023) any 3500 SRW GM truck towing a 14,000 GVWR trailer would exceed 26,000 pounds GCWR therefore requiring a class A license if using for business and in some states a non commercial class A license. This 2500 max tow will not exceed 26,000 GCWR with that same 14,000 GVWR trailer and therefore the driver wouldn’t need a class A CDL if using for business and the states requiring the non commercial class A license wouldn’t apply. Hope this helps you though. And again just my opinion but I would bet that’s the reasoning behind it.

@@automotiveinquiries9673 no problem and you’re welcome. My question I’d like answered is are they going to offer this on the gas trucks. So far the build and price tool forces the diesel option when you select it. I suppose it’s not necessary for the gas trucks because you can already tow a 14,000 GVWR trailer and stay under 26,000, even with a 3500 SRW because they have a lower GVWR than the diesels. But still, I’d pick the package if I were ordering because it seems like a good value and I’m also sure it will help with resale value.

You are dead on with this. The NHT Max Tow is basically a de-rated 3500. Everything the same except GVWR/GCWR on the door label. I am picking mine up next week (new company vehicle). I found a rare one (Silverado LT) that has NHT but NOT the 5th Wheel Prep (must have been an early build). It's is only a 100.00 option and I get the 3500 frame, 12" ring gear, and overload springs...with 11,750 GVWR. Was a perfect solution for me as my company only buys 2500's so I am still getting a 3500, Just can't legally use the full capacity.

I just traded my 2017 3500 SRW for a 23 3500 DRW truck mostly because I was always overloaded hauling my 35' fifth wheel , partly because of all of my add ons like ranch hand front bumper, 18k winch, aux fuel tank, truck tool box etc. Truck handled everything fine, but know that if I was ever involved in a crash, and it was proved that I was over loaded based on the manufacturer rating, I could loose a lot of money. There are many times that I was right at 13,000 on my truck fully loaded and that was with a GVWR of 11,600. Even with a new 3500 SRW with a GVWR of 12,250, I would have still been over weight. Sure I could have removed some of my add ons and been legal, but I made the hard decision of buying a dually instead. I don't know what the real benefit of having a derated 3500 would actually be with the exception of having bragging rights on the most capable 2500 truck. Getting everything for 100.00 is a great deal though.

I am ordering a blue 2500 hd with trailer max package. I will be pulling a heavy fifth wheel but not full time . I been debating on dually or single wheels . It’s close to 3000 more for a dually .my fifth wheel gross is 15,000 pounds. What do you think I should do ?

I doubt I would have heard about this unique package for quite some time if you had not discovered and brought it up. This package reminds me somewhat of the Ford F250 tremor package in the sense of them using the f350 spring pack with overload and the heavier F350 rear diff housing. I don't know what the ford towing numbers are with their package but I have to wonder if there is some 3/4 ton vs 1 ton get around for insurance or license fees that is prompting both these companies to create this unique capacity package. More choices for the consumer so I can't complain about that.

The max row I'm essence is a 1 ton. The gm trucks ride is the best in the segment of hd, loaded or unloaded over the one tons in the market. Handling is better and less sag over all 3. As for 3/4 ton trucks the ram does have a decent ride with the 5 link coil....however the ram 3/4 payload can't even compete with chevy standard or max tow.

SO! how much does this claim to fame max trailer package have for a payload, because when you drive a living need to know both cannot have towing cap. of 18500# and a payload limit of 3170# just will not work and get you a big fine for being over weight on rear axle at the weigh station. sorry for long but this is important

I'll agree, a lot of sales people aren't really familiar with all that each vehicle packages at. When I took my first one out, they didn't even know if had it. That being said as a gooseneck tongue or pin weight, I'd say at 20%, you would over. The package itself gives tons of extra items besides the 3500 leaf springs. What ive seen as most trailers are averaging 10 to 15 % instead of 20, but that would still be closer. But if the weight is distributed correctly ones trailer could weight 18k and not have a pin weight exceeding the max. Hopefully they took to heart that a customer came in and new more and they get there act together. Well.done on your behalf....but I get the frustration for sure. When I was selling chevy gmc and ram...they sent everyone over to ask questions about the truck specs.
