NOTE(for the haters): 1. Yes, the title is click bait but only if you don't read the whole thing. 2. Your right, I'm not wearing gloves in half the video, calm down. I'm wearing a helmet and a leather coat the whole time. Yes gloves are a good idea but this isn't a safety video, it's a motorcycle review.

Swanky Cat Productions but the good news is the KLR is a 4-stroke motor which means it's quieter than us 2 cycle motor. There for you can go more places without being harassed by the assholes that want to call the cops.

Michael grossman, Sorry I missed your comment!!! You're talking about sliding around the corners? Currently I'm able to a little bit under the right conditions. When I filmed this I was probably not able too haha. Even today it is a bit intimidating (for me anyway) due to the height and weight of the bike. If you know what your doing I'm sure its more then capable!

I've been riding bikes for almost 30 years and obviously owned a lot of motorcycles, including touring, cruising and enduro style. My 2012 is the most comfortable and very capable motorcycle. I absolutely love it. If you are over 6 ft. tall, this is the bike to consider. I raised the seat about 1 1/2" and the handlebars by 2 inches. I can comfortably seat and have my feet flat on the ground, about a foot in front of the front foot pegs. KLR650 is like a Jeep. It's not a tractor not a Formula 1. It's a great compromise. One drawback is that it's too small for two people unless the riders are below an average in height and weight. My bike does not burn any oil at all, at any speed. I bought it with one mile on the odometer and did an alternative break-in procedure where you roll the throttle on and off, vary speed, use engine braking and stop frequently to let it cool of a little. This ensured proper seating of the piston rings. The bike does not vibrate more than an average cruiser (excluding Harleys). I once felt more vibration than usual. Tightening engine mount bolts fixed the problem. I also never lube the chain as much as some people recommend. I do this once every 1,000 to 1,500 miles and only lightly spay it with chain lube when the chain is warm, after riding the bike. I never had to adjust the chain tension in almost 15,000 miles. The bike is low maintenance, tough and very reliable machine.

I bought my 07 KLR new on April Fool's Day traded a 66 Sportster in on that bike have never regretted it I live in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and only one time was I sorely wishing I had a smaller bike but only because I took it way too far off road and ended up having one hell of a hill climb to get out I went down four times but eventually I got out totally by myself

I have a 2014 KLR New Edition I bought brand new in January 2015. It currently has 8,176 miles on it. I have owned numerous bikes over the years and the KLR is definitely my favorite. It is the most versatile, easy to maintain bike available. The factory tires wear out within 3,500 miles but other than that the bike is bulletproof. Factory and aftermarket accessories are numerous and easy to add. The military uses these bikes for good reason. Highly recommend the KLR 650 over any other.

I've had my KLR since the spring of 1993 when I took it off the showroom floor. My longest ride in one day was from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Newport, Rhode Island. it was 900 miles in 21 hours. It has never stopped running and running well. I changed the spark plug once and the oil regularly. Have never lost any oil at any rpms. I guess I'm lucky, I've never touched the Doohickey in 31,000 miles. I do believe I need a new timing chain and well probably change the Doohickey then.

I was looking at the very expensive Yamaha super tenere but don't really want to pay that much for a bike I won't ride all over the country this is the bike I started looking at & the new 2016 is just amazing i test ride it & I really like it & your review helped I'm going to buy it tomorrow. I agree, like I said in that clip, I was very concerned about how it did on the highway when researching the bike and I did not find much. The DRZ400 I had was pretty much the worst highway riding experience and I wanted to make sure the KLR would not be the same. As I said, I was pleasantly surprised during the 1.5 hour ride home from buying it. It really is everything I hoped it would be. Good luck and BE SAFE!

Ive owned a 97 KLR and currently have a 2008. On both bikes I had a stage 3 Dyno Jet Kit installed, cut the L out of the top of the air box, installed the KnN air filter, cut the air box screen out (optional) and installed a quality free flowing pipe. These mods absolutely wake the bike up, the difference is night and day. Would highly recommend for any KLR owner. (fuel economy is slightly compromised tho but so worth it.) It now power wheelies in first and second gear to give you an idea. 170km/hr is easy and quick to reach but redlines out.

I have been working for months to find the perfect bike for me. I have a 2007 Harley Davidson, Dyna Wide Glide now and have for the last 10 years, and it is time to get dirty. All I do is worry about scratching the damn thing and after owning it for a decade and still haven't dropped it, I may as well get rid of it before I do, and get a bike that can be dropped. I started looking at duel sports and have moved my way to the adventure bikes now. I have decided on a Honda African Twin. The cc's, weight, and extras are going to keep me happy for another decade at least. I am writing you because: 1) you had a great video. It covered everything that I needed to know when I was considering the KLR for my future bike. You were thorough, not conceited, accepted that others may not want your style bike, and funny. Great work, keep it up. I am subscribing to watch the rest of your adventures. 2) The tires that you have are the ones that I am interested in. I am going to be doing 70% on road daily driver, and 30% off road which will mostly be grass, dry dirt, and (tight) gravel. The bike weighs just over 500lbs and I weigh 230lbs. I will probably not exceed 35mph in off road turns, and 50mph in off road strait aways. And on road I maybe could get a hair up my butt and go 90mph...... once........ ever....... maybe. Anyway, I am an experienced on road rider, and a 40% out of 100% off road rider. Do you think that these tires are a good choice for me or are there others you would suggest after me giving you my experience level and weight and where I am headed. Thanks and stay safe out there.

Hey! Glad to hear you are interested in adventure riding, it's an awesome sport and community to get into. I rode rockets for many years and would never go back. As for the tires, i love them, they are cheap and work great both ON and OFF road. While there may be better tires out there, I doubt there are any out there that are better for the price. Thanks for watching! Africa Twin will be a fun bike I'll bet. Ride safe! Thanks again!

I loved my 2004!!! I had the taller/wider windshield and all the guards, strobing LED taillight, serrated pegs and Big Gun exhaust . Also better fork springs and brake lines. The OE tires were horrible on sand. The stock charging system was weak and it DEFINITELY needs a sixth gear.

I love my 2014 KLR. I put 11,000 miles on it in one year. The upright position makes it very comfortable even at speeds up to 70 mph. Just watch out for strong cross winds. It's kind of top heavy, and light in the front end. It can throw you around quite a bit on a windy day. On a calm day, no problem!

  • @25BEDFORD

Completely agree. Depending on wind direction and speed will determine if you feel like a pinball on the highway. 18 wheelers passing you on highway can be an adventure. Have had my 09' for 6 years and have around 6k miles. I am 6'2" 270lbs and bike is ok for quick commutes, but I cant stay comfortable for long rides. It's good for back or county road riding but I will stick with Goldwing for long distant highway.

Hopefully you were being sarcastic. Real men ride whatever the hell they like. I started riding cruisers at 18. went from a 1986 900 intruder to a harley sportster and I'm now 31 and ride a 2010 Kawasaki Z1000. People like what they like. tastes change over time or people need different bikes for different things. I thought cruisers were the only thing i'd ever ride and then I rode the Z1000 and now im in love with my bike. Personally as long as its 2 wheels and you like to ride it its all good in my book. Plus with the japanese bikes you arent always fixing shit like the harley's or the slightly older EURO bikes. Although H.D. has stepped their manufacturing up so they have been more reliable for the past few years.

I have had 2 gen 1 KLR650s, and enjoyed them very much. Some people go crazy modifying every single thing on them, I kept mine pretty stock. The one major upgrade I made was an aftermarket centerstand, and it really came in handy several times when I had flat tires. In fact I would have probably been in real trouble a few times without it. Trouble as in life threatening trouble. I finally got old and developed severe arthritis. I had to give up the KLRs for an XT225. It also has an aftermarket centerstand on it, as well as a Clarke 4 gallon tank, and a kickstarter from a TTR-225. I ride it about an hour on a 65 mph road at 55-60 mph to get to an off road riding area, and fortunately there is a gas station only a few miles from there. I also have Tusk tank panniers, and can carry an extra gallon of gas in those if I think it might be necessary. The little XT doesn't have the road capabilities of the KLR, but it is a LOT easier to ride off road. 3 1/2" less seat height really makes a difference. It got so I couldn't even get on the KLR.

A centerstand would be pretty nice to have, maybe I'll have to look into one. I also keep mine fairly simple, just some simple helpful things. I also have a light enduro and they do provide a much less stressful riding experience haha. Take care!

10:23, that was funny, thanks for posting, I just bought a 2017 Camo KLR, I had a DRZ 400, great bike but it just did not have the highway ability I needed, it was better off road than the KLR but not by a ton, I would rather give that up to have better highway manners, it really opens up more options for exploring, its just unreal the cult following the KLR has, hope to start doing some vlogging soon, subscribed.

Nice video and great info for average riders. The KLR is a great bike, otherwise they wouldn't still be making them after what, almost 30 years now? But, I've never ridden one. I have a DR 650 and think it's just great! Like the KLR, it will easily cruise 75 as long as you want. And it is very off road capable, but lighter. And like the KLR, the DR650 will climb any hill with no effort. Tons and tons of torque.

After looking at the old Klr650 vs the new one, I decided to get the 07 unit because the new ones have another 30+£/lbs# of weight and same old motor, same steel frame,if the new Klr650 had sixth gear and aluminum frame and removable front shield and removable rear rack/ turn signals so we can really off road it after dumping the gear off at the campsite.

Well what you said about how it's kinda tall and hard to save yourself when your climbing a hill or something, all you need to do is transfer you weight but u still want to keep the balance point. So when you switch your weight to put your foot on the ground you still have your other foot on the bike and keeping the balance point so you don't fall over. However when you are doing this you are ganna have to switch your position on the bike to the other side so you don't dump it. It's a little hard but if u do that it will be easier to get up the rock hills or rocky terrains. If that makes sense

Did a 1200 mile round trip on the 2013 all pavement, most comfortable longer trip I had on a bike. Just for reference I've owned a Honda Rebel, Suzuki GS 500, 2 Ninjas, Harley Sportster 883, Harley Night Train and Harley V-Rod. I would not trade the KLR back for any of them. You know, I've owned lot of different bikes including several full dress touring beasts. A friend let me ride his KLR 650 and I fell in love with it. I bought a new 2012 KLR soon after that. I'm tall and this bike just feels right. Its extremely comfortable! I did install an aftermarket seat (raised about 1 1/2"). I can ride this bike all day long. To me, its a lot more comfortable than Gold Wings and BMWs. I can ride it on trails and it can do 80 MPH all day long. BTW, it burns zero oil because I followed a proper break-in procedure, different from what the manual recommends. I did a lot of throttle roll-on that followed some engine breaking to slow down. This breaks-in the piston rings and lubes them better during the first 100 miles. I also installed a ThermoBob cooling system upgrade to improve temperature stability. I also installed a "Doo" chain tensioner upgrade although the original tensioner had plenty of adjustment room left.. This bike is a pleasure to ride. I also like the simplicity of this bike. It can be easily repaired on the road with just the basic tools. For me, it does have plenty of power and the gas mileage is right at about 55-60 MPG that gets me a 300 mile range on a full tank.

  • @SwankyCatProductions

Anybody who doubts the KLR is a keyboard rider and has likely never even ridden a dual sport. My 2012 KLR went anywhere I had the guts to take it including the rubicon trail and the occasional day at the local motocross track. After I put a full Vance & Hines exhaust, Dyno Jet stage 2 jet kit, and opened up the air box the bike really woke up and became an absolute powerhouse. Not only did my KLR handle everything I threw at it but it took 30k miles of abuse and still ran lime new the day I sold it. I'm dying to get a new one. Been off a bike for far too long

Had my 2007, gen 1, since 2009. Here's my key take aways if you're considering 1: 1) It's not a DRZ or a CR. It's heavy, harder work off road than those, but just as he said, you can cruise at 75 on hwy to get to the dirt, or spend a day crusing with your Harley buddys 2) If you're short, lower it. I was really hesitant, but I am much better off road now that I can get a solid foot down when needed. 3) Try different counter sprockets. 16T keeps rpms at 5k at 75+, 14T is really really better in technical off-road stuff. 4) I'd like to upgrade the springs & shocks on both ends. It is very undersprung and it's very apparent when the trail gets technical. I've read that it's the best thing you can do for this bike. All in all..it's like my jeep...does nothing spectacular, but does everything and tons of fun.

Nice looking KLR you have there, I like the green and black. I have a DR650 and have ridden both highway and very rough Colorado mountain trails for years. I have also ridden a KLR before. So I can tell you that the DR is actually much better off road, but not quite as good on highway. But, the DR is still good on highway if you add a wind screen. And like all the big 650 thumpers, power is excellent! I road a DRZ 400 once and it was truly awful with the close gear ratios and very low 5th gear. That thing was screaming at 70mph. Also I thought the power was a bit anemic.

Jackson county has a 20 buck a year sticker and Clark county last I knew, was free as long as a bike was plated. Lots of off-roading around those two counties, though some areas are pretty sandy but like I said, there is a ton of two-track, which is the trails/roads with 2 tire ruts with grass in the middle that cars or trucks have made through the forest everywhere. www.blackrivercountry.net/recreation/atv-off-road-motorcycles/ www.co.clark.wi.us/DocumentCenter/Home/View/20

A klr is a funny bike. People either love em or hate em. I totally love my 2013 that I bought new.. Mine sees lots of gravel roads, trails and hwy. I run Dunlop 606 tires.. Way too much fun
