I bought a 2013 Kia Rio in 2014 with 15k miles on it and it has been great, daily driving it ever since and never once had a breakdown, not even a dead battery. I get the oil changed with full synthetic every 5k miles and replace wear items as needed but there has never been a major mechanical issue with it. It's now got 105k and still starts right up whenever I turn the key. My only real complaint with the car is that the ECO mode turns it into a freaking slug, but I sacrifice the gas mileage and keep that turned off, and with it off it's plenty zippy enough unless your car is full of stuff. People always crap all over Kia but mine has done very well by me.

We bought a 2012 Accent in 2014 with less than 10k on the odo. Aside from several oil changes and a slightly noisy front wheel bushing and steering column when hitting potholes or badly made humps, I'd say it's a damn good and reliable car. Maybe it's the driver. edit: Mileage is good. Power is also good. I was always skeptical with non-Japanese makes, but I am very pleased with it.

I don't understand why you're bashing these little econoboxes. They're cheap, basic, little commuter cars. Just point A to point B transportation platforms. The "weaknesses" you describe don't seem that bad to me. What FWD car doesn't need the CV shafts replaced at ~60K miles? Brake rotors warp, especially if you ride the brakes coming down the mountain and overheat them. They're cheap and it's an easy job to replace them. I show you $50,000 Lexus with cloudy headlight lenses. Replacing the PCV valve is a 10 minute job.

  • @AutoMotivate

The PCV valve typically isn’t the culprit for burning oil. I’m not bashing the car, I’m educating others so they know what to look out for. If you buy the car, keep an eye on the oil so you don’t blow the engine. It’s that Simple.

I've had to replace both CV axles because of the boots. My headlights not only fades but a lot of little cracks (typical on hatchback headlights). It is possible to upgrade the front brakes from 255 to 280mm rotors using Rio SX parts. These cars also need frequent PCV valve replacements to deal with the carbon build up.

Basic maint. On all cars. As I mentioned before use OEM parts especially oil filters. One thing that will make a big difference for those of you that are able to is use a bottle of AT-205 reseller on rubber housings and basically all rubber components in suspension. You want to put this resealer in a spray bottle and spray on these rubber parts like the cv boots. It will recondition them and make them last a lot longer. It works! The main reason for CV axles to prematurely wear and break down is the axle boots Crack and allow grease to escape and dirt to get in them. This resealer is for reconditioning all seals in other areas of engine and transmission, but also works super great on exposed rubber.

Get the P0420 code intermittently during heavy stop and go traffic so the cat might be nearing the end of it's life. And I usually change the oil between 10,000-15,000 miles using Amsoil Signature series. Only needing to top it off occasionally in between changes. That's pretty phenomenal! Also send the oil out for testing every few changes and the reports always come back great!

If you're driving a stick shift version, watch out for the push rod of the clutch pedal as it's made of plastic and can easily snap and break. Local mechanics here have improvised and have been replacing these with push rods made of metal (sometimes, from other cars like an Isuzu pickup truck). It's a known Hyundai issue and is prevalent in Accent and Tucson units with manual transmissions.

I still have the original break pads and shoes on the car. I've never had to replace one sensor on the car. The only issue is it pings when I run it on regular so I just put super in it. From my understanding its not good to let it ping because it's essentially pushing the piston down when it hasn't reached TDC and that can damage the engine.

Use midgrade gasoline, synthetic oil and always use an OEM oil filter on these cars, it's detrimental. The oil filters are especially engineered to retain oil when starting them up providing immediate oil before circulating. This will keep your engine from wearing down because most of these engines have a weaker oil pump. Doing these few things will help your car last much longer with less issues.

  • @palebeachbum

Thank you for mentioning at the end of the video that if the engine is burning oil it will eventually clog up the catalytic converter. Like your friend, a lot of people spend a lot of money to replace the catalytic converter when it fails without fixing the oil burning problem of the engine. So the new catalytic will inevitably fail again for the same reason.

Hopefully you topped off the oil level before giving the car back. The inside of the engine (oil cap removed) was nasty & looks like it wasn't maintained properly. Oil changes every 6 months/5k miles minimum!! Oil consumption possibly from needing PCV valve replaced. Agree, cabin is Loud.

thank you for the info my friend although I got to differ with you in that I do own a 2013 Hyundai Accent and it's rather one of the most reliable cars I had owned, I use it as my commuter car and put 100 miles daily and it is a work horse!!! hardly ever breaks down only the usual maintenance and cheap on gas too. I do agree with you in the noise issue and the braking system, but if you keep up with it; those become a minor detail

GDI tehnology to day is good and bad. The good all driver know but the bad don't know. W/GDI the intake gallery and valves in short time are carbonized, smoked, black greased, etc. The engine performances go down and the job to clean-up are very expensive. I advice you that at each 10 kkm to try to decarbonized all. Like this job you will save the engine and money. See a lot of info on the You Tube.

So generally how reliable are Korean cars

  • @AutoMotivate

    @AutoMotivate

    2 жыл бұрын

Generally, most of these cars are cheap economy cars. The minority of folks who buy these cars probably don’t take care of them as they should. The examples that have been well maintained are actually reliable. For an example, I’ve seen plenty older Kias and Hyundai’s from the early 2000s driving around is pretty good condition. With that said, they can’t take a beating like the Japanese variants car. If you run low in oil, or redline the car routinely, then you’ll shorten the life. A Japanese car, in general, can easily take the torture for longer. That’s my take/view. There has been a few dubs, though. Like the smoking Elantra(I believe that the car) that blows engines.

If You slow this Video Down at 4:10 and freeze frame it at 4:11.. You can see on the Bottom of the Cap that the Oil is Extremely Black and Dirty... That is because You dont Change Your Engine Oil often enough... I have a 2017 KIA RIO LX with a 1.6 Liter and my Oil Never gets that Black,,, and I dont burn a Drop of Oil... But then again I dont wait 10,000 Miles to change my Oil either... Sure,, all engines produce Carbon,,, but what You are showing us is NEGLECT...

Sure, neglect could very well be an issue. However, if the car burns oil, which many do for these years, then it could resemble the same look even if you replace the oil in the correct intervals.
