Don't Buy a Gaming Monitor - TVs are Better
Alright look I'm about to give you a hard truth, monitors typically aren't good.
Yeah I said it, and I'll say it as many times as needed, now there are definitely some good monitors out there such as the OLED G9 and AW3423DW, but even those get their chocolate starfish wiped clean by modern flagship TVs.
Now it is fair to say that anything costing thousands of dollars or over 42” is not a great alternative to a monitor for the majority of gamers, but there are actually some TVs out there that are relatively affordable, a reasonable size, or both. Now the obvious example would be the LG C2 which is a 4K 42” 120Hz TV you can typically find second hand for around $600 now, and as a 4K monitor it’s much better than most of even the best mini LED alternatives because you get the perfect per pixel dimming of OLED and a glossy screen, however I actually do prefer some of Samsung’s QD OLED monitors over this personally if your ok stepping down in resolution.
The real cheek clenching monstrously high performing TVs that enthusiast gamers should be looking at if you really want the best would be the S95C, LG G3, or S95B. now personally I think the S95C is hands down the best PC gaming display in existence thanks to its in my opinion superior color and refresh rate compared to the G3, but even the G3 and last years S95B which can often be found around $1,000 are miles better than any monitors on the market.
But why, well I'm glad you asked Charlie, and the main reason is brightness. Now OLEDs biggest problem for years has been they are incredibly dim when compared to mini LED, and neigh unusable for actual PC tasks. This issue does not apply to modern flagship TVs.
Let’s take the S95C for example. After some fiddling it can reach over 2000 nits of peak brightness allowing for unbelievably good looking HDR highlights as well as no blooming, incredible color thanks to the glossy finish and QD filter, and it even gets a very solid roughly 260-270nits full screen making it very usable for desktop use especially if you disable auto dimming. OLED monitors on the other hand unfortunately oftentimes not only are nowhere near as bright, but also at least from LG sport a matte finish reducing the contrast ratio and clarity of the display.
Now one downside to using an OLED TV as a monitor is the risk of burn in which should hopefully be much better on the S95C and all other 2nd generation QD OLEDs, but if your really worried about that, sure a mini LED monitor could be a great choice for you, but I actually found that the average screen brightness of the S95C is often not far behind very bright mini LED monitors when playing games, and with much higher peak brightness and better response times plus no hideous, vomit inducing matte finish, it's over a much better display.
The only real downside is the size and the price of TVs like this; at least on release, so hopefully in the future there will be smaller, and cheaper options available, but as for now, these flagship TVs are hands down a much better choice for no compromise PC gaming if picture quality is your chief concern.

Do you guys have any preference. I am debating between a LG C2 OLED and Samsung Odyssey Neo G9. The C2 i can get for 900,- and the Neo G9 for 1350,-. I am wondering which has superior quality? I plan to use it for everything in a fairly dark room. I do a lot of 3d modeling, so there is a lot of static panes for hours on end, but when i work i have my brightness super low, i am hoping that will prevent burn in. Are there any other people using a OLED tv as a work monitor, i am a bit hesitant though?

In another video you said to avoid ultrawide monitors for competitive gaming and gaming in general as it will cause a learning curve. Now, you co-sign 120hz max TVs @4k (lawd have mercy even 8K) that look like trash when ran at 1080p, and didn’t mention competitive PC gaming or the added cost in hardware to run games at 4K/8K. IMO, AAA third person games do look better on a TV. That’s why I run my PS5 on my OLED TV, but I’d still take a solid 34”, 38”, or 45” panel over a TV when it comes to overall PC gaming.

I'd say for someone who's not using their PC for work or productivity and purely gaming and content then a TV is perfect... Let's be honest you shouldn't be using an Oled at all if your using it in a desk for work and productivity due to burn-in potential and text blurring/fringing

Smart TV's (eg 4k 120Hz from Sony or LG) are able to do multiple things including watch TV networks, console/PC connection. And they offer good screen sizes to like 42', 43', 48', etc, and are often cheaper than dedicated monitors. They also have their own OS and come with a remote and built-in speakers.

Hell even TCL have some decent options if you aren't wanting to spend as much although it's not an Oled. TCL makes a TV that's around £600 and it has a 144HZ screen and like 1200 Nits peak brightness. Just looked for it there, the name of it is the TCL 50QM8B and the peak brightness is actually higher at 1300Nits peak brightness, it supports Dolby Vision and it's a Mini Led screen that is also a Qled. It's just extremely hard to beat a TV at the same price and the only reasons that I can see that you would want a monitor are that TVs don't have displayport (HDMI 2.1 can do 144HZ and you can add a sound system easier through Arc or eArc so I don't really get why people fawn over displayport so much other than it's an open standard but in practical uses HDMI is better) and or if you don't have very much space but still want good specs such as high refresh rate and HDR. Monitors just don't seem to work out when I compare them especially if you have a sound system or soundbar which would mean that you have to use low quality optical. Like I don't have a big room or more so I have built in stuff that takes up too much room leaving my room small and I want to switch to a monitor but I can't bring myself to do it,to have an operating system,as in like a smart TV box I'll need to buy a Roku box/stick or a Xiaomi box and mount it to the back of the monitor to have a way of watching content that's low power and easy to use, to use my sound setup I would need to downgrade to optical and suffer lower quality audio and on top of that it wouldn't even be a higher spec than my TV other than refresh rate. Honestly I wish that monitors were far better than they are especially considering how widespread they are but no instead you pay more for less.

Don't understand why more people don't point this out. Practically every single "gaming" monitor out there is a scam. You can get an infinitely better display by just buying a mid range tv. The only reason to buy a monitor over a tv is if you play extremely particular games where you want a really high refresh rate, or if you just don't have the space.

Right now I have a 43in QN90B, I've had it for a year and a half now, and have been using it as my sole monitor. At the time that I bought it it was the most affordable 4K HDR screen that wasn't complete garbage. VA panel, glossy, 144hz, 360 dimming zones with MiniLED, 1500nits, sounded great. And it was. There were some quirks with it and they are still there. If I switch the inputs, turn Windows HDR on or off, or turn the screen off, it causes a weird glitch between it and my GPU. I've had this happen with two GPU's so the culprit is definitely the screen. Why I'm not really sure. At first it was just an annoyance since whenever it happens I have to hard reset my computer for the screen to recognize it again. But within the past three months, the glitch happened while I was transferring files, and the ensuing hard reset corrupted both drives. One was salvageable, the other was not. So while the PC caused the corruption thanks to the restart, the monitor was the reason I had to do that restart in the first place. And it's made me hesitant to ever use a TV as a monitor again and why I'm in a bit of a rush to find a replacement that isn't a downgrade. I can accept an IPS monitor due to the simple fact that they're the most common flatscreen HDR1000 monitors, but nothing more than that. Sadly, the two best candidates are the Innocn 32M2V which is out of stock with no signs of returning, and the KTC M32P10 which uses the same panel and is in stock, but with zero reviews. I suppose there is the Asus PG32UQX, but even Renewed it's way outside of what I would pay and I hear it has smearing/motion issues. And OLED is out right now. LG's are W-OLED, the worst kind of OLED, and 1440p which is a no. But any 4K OLED's I've found are 60hz, which is also a no. If I wasn't afraid of more expensive drives dying I'd hold out for the Asus QD-OLED or the KTC VA MiniLED that just got announced, but those aren't dropping until next year.

HDR in games is super hard to calibrate especially since I have to use Nvidia Freestyle also and figure out how to get both working at the same time with the settings I used to have in SDR, Overwatch 2 doesn't work with HDR and Freestyle at the same time and Genshin doesn't have HDR, Diablo 4 is the only game where I managed to get a decent combo of HDR and Filter settings.

That is seriously what I am contemplating doing. I am a little skeptical about putting a 42 inch TV on my desk that is only 62.5cm (25 inches) in depth. Will I be too close for a screen that size? Then again, I do generally like my screens big! I have been using projectors for my home entertainment and console gaming for well over a decade now, and don't feel I could ever be satisfied with just a TV again, no matter how big and how much better the image quality will be with one. And to me personally, that isn't even a patch on what I am getting at the movies immersion and size wise. I could seriously do with a new display for my PC. I am currently only using the 15.6 inch display built into my MSI GE66 Raider, but feel I could do with a bigger screen. I have looked at monitors of all types, including OLED and Mini LED options but they all tend to have deal-breaking flaws or drawbacks (QC issues, locked settings in calibrated gamut modes, poorly tuned overdrive modes, no BFI/strobing at 60 Hz for retro gaming, firmware issues, bad anti-glare coatings, etc.) none of which a 42 inch LG OLED TV has? Being so used to using my PC on such a small screen for so long, I'm not too sure how I'd take to using a screen so big. Going from 15 to 42/48 is going to be different from those going to 27/32 to 42/48. I'm sure over time I will adjust though. A TV as a monitor it'll probably be...? :)

My desk is part of an old IKEA loft bed frame, which has a mesh metal frame back to it, of which I could supposedly hack something together mount the TV to that, thus giving me a bit more space? A clip on Keyboard tray that clamps to the edge of my desk could also be an option to open me up to a bit more space. The laptop could be pushed back with the lid closed when in use for extra keyboard space to use the TV for productivity and gaming, and be pulled back out just to use it's built in screen when just doing casual web browsing, etc.

@@jarekzahary #1 - Image quality is better than any of these other monitors. Not just in detail, but in colors. The only one that came close was the AW3423DWF, and that was only on colors. Detail was a major step down of course, since it's not 4K. #2 - Black Stabilizer. This is a feature within LG's "Game Optimizer" menu on their TVs that I haven't found on ANY of the monitors (once HDR is enabled) except the Samsung OLED G8 (and I'm not even 100% certain it works in HDR there, although I believe it does). HDR on an OLED drops your shadows to nearly complete black voids. This is bad for multiplayer shooters for obvious reasons. I won't buy another OLED TV or monitor without this feature at this point. #3 - HDMI 2.1 for every port. Even displayport 1.4 can't do full 10-bit color correctly, I believe. I'm not sure how to quantify it, but you can see a visual difference between the two when you switch back and forth. The dithering on gradients showed significant banding on Displayport 1.4 (I saw this on the LG 27GR95QE monitor, ironically.) #4 - Screen real estate. If your desk is big enough, this thing really enhances the desktop computing experience. No 2nd monitors required. Just install Windows PowerToys so you can make use of FancyZones, and you can make all sorts of custom window snapping sizes. #5 - It's a TV, but with that, you get all that comes with a TV. Exactly. Unless you're playing high competitive games and you're really competing there's no reason why you shouldn't. You should buy a monitor. They're more expensive. They're smaller. A TV will get the same enjoyment. Just make sure it's 1080 or 4K

Those rare QD OLED monitors are sort of the exception, but it depends on what you want. Even though the OLED G9 is very good it’s much more dim and it also is a much lower resolution. That said it’s smaller and has a higher Framerate.

Of the several TV's I've connected to my PCs throughout my life, none was able to display the computer desktop, menus and especially words properly, without image artefacts and other issues. Yes, TVs are great with video, but when it comes to the computer static screens, menus and words, they really suck, possibly because their image tuned 100% towards video, is not so good as far as computer overall image tune up goes because what is good for video image is not as good for other types of image display. And I seriously doubt this TV is an exception to that rule. This is why monitors are superior to (and more expensive than) TVs. If this TV as you say was better than the best monitors at being a monitor, it would be more expensive than said monitors and also marketed as being not only "monitor capable" but also "the best monitor around" but that's not the case and there's obviously a good reason for that. Maybe you're right and it's only the burn-in issue, but you can bet that if that is the reason, then that issue is serious enough that they don't market this TV as a monitor so it's probably really not a good idea to use it as a monitor (if you value your money and you're not really well off). Monitors, while they may not be the best at showing video, they still the best at all other visual computer tasks. And that's why monitors are monitors and TVs are TVs. And if your answer to this is "But OLED monitors use the same same technology as OLED TVs" remember that LCD monitors also used the same technology LCD TVs used and yet they were very different in how they display a computer desktop.

TV’s just make so much more sense to me. I’ve had a 32” TV for over 11 years that I’ve been using as a double duty TV/computer monitor (on a swivel wall mount). As a computer monitor the resolution isn’t great. But I would only play WoW and Minecraft on it and use it for work. The built in speakers on it are still sooo much better than anything offered today. I seriously don’t get how they are so loud and so good for a 32” TV. Better and louder than our 75” 4k samsung TV. Alas it’s time to upgrade the resolution. I much prefer having a remote and built in speakers that a TV offers over using a Monitor that I’ll have to turn on manually if I want to watch TV so I’m saving my money again and going with an HD 32” TV perfect size for my computer needs and TV needs in my bedroom.

I do not know how use the computer those who think that more than 200nit is insufficient value. 4 windows in the room on each side without any blind and only during the day ? I for one am overjoyed because compared to my old monitor it's like heaven on earth. Only problem - price. 200-300 euro cheaper will be perfect price. :)

IMO for real 24/7 monitor use, I agree if any OLED TV fits the bill for the majority of use cases, it's a 42" LG C2/C3 (as long as the C2 is an EVO panel, not all were, from what I've heard). I definitely didn't like the brightness and aggressive ABL of both my 48" CX and C1, which have both ended up as bedroom TV's in my house ). You could definitely wallmount a S95C, but I am still a little leery considering the reports of burn in on Gen 1 QD-OLED. They say it's better with Gen 2- but the jury is still out. And 55" is hella big for monitor use for most setups. I am loving my OLED G9 for day to day use- it's bright enough for me and beautiful to look at, and if Samsung purposely lowered the brightness to preserve the panel, I'm ok with that. I kept my LG Flex for work and 16:9 use. The Flex still has ABL, which is annoying, but it's much better than the older gen LG panels- which is why I say you probably want a EVO panel at minimum for LG.

Monitors experience less input lag. Televisions experience more input lag. A monitor does not consist of a tuner. Televisions come with a tuner or a remote. The main actual difference is that monitors don't usually have speakers built into them, and TVs do.
