    Listen bro, as a bro[ke] man myself, I can tell you that you wasted way too much time, energy and money trying to get your drywall to support a frikin cat. Home slice, you need to look up what "studs," are. They're the two-by-fours in your wall that go up and down that the drywall gets drilled into. Find those, and screw your cat platforms onto those. That would have been the first place I would have mounted those things to. Get a strong neodymium magnet and find the screws they used to secure the drywall. Get two up and down in a row, and you've got a line of where a stud is at. Rinse, and repeat for all mounting points. When you mount things to the studs, they're sturdy enough to allow YOU to jump up and down on them, with your wife (if you know that I mean). Also That carpet could have been put on there with some foam to cushion the impact on kitty's joints ❤

    The problem is that those desirable 2x4 studs aren't always where you need them to be. In my old house, the studs are 24 inches apart. Hence, anchors.

  • @KettlebellGunsmith
    @KettlebellGunsmith Жыл бұрын

    No drywall screws, no matter how expensive, will survive a vibrating load. Specifically, the drywall will always disintegrate over time. For a dynamic load like this, even only a cat's weight, it's a requirement for everything to be anchored into a stud. If your stud width doesn't match up with a desired plaform location, put a board flat across two studs and mount the platform to the board.

    Yeah, this. It's also a whole lot easier to screw into studs than deal with complicated and messy anchors. I think it might be OK to get one stud each, then a couple molly bolts for stability. That's how I do most of the stuff I've installed in my house, and I haven't had anything come loose yet. The stuff that always comes loose are the undersized and goofy push-in/screw-in anchors, installed by the previous owner's contractors.

    Pro Tip : to test for stud discreetly, tap a finish (small) nail into the wall just at the top of the baseboard at 16”, repeat at next 16 inch. You’ll never notice the tiny hole that low, and you can always fill it if you choose.

    Anything mounted to only the drywall for this purpous is going to give out at some point . The anchor type does not matter . Drywall is not made for this kind of stress . You must find the studs or put reinforcing wood or metal behind the drywall . For this type of use you will likely also need a plate ( wood or metal ) directly behind the shelf legs to prevent it from evently wearing out the drywall as wall and loosening the shelf .

    Terrible way to mount anything with significant weight or movement. I too was wondering why he wasn't using studs. I had a spot between beams where I had to use a piece of wood as a stable bridge to mount onto the stud and then screw something to the bridge. Those anchors are only for hanging pictures or something light and stationary. With all that movement, those anchors will eventually come loose. He should have consulted with someone whose done a little bit of home improvement work. Even a non professional DIY video on KZread could have told him that. For someone who makes videos it boggles my mind he didn't do a search on KZread "how to mount shelves on your wall".

    I’ve always used toggle bolts for installing things on the walls. Even if they’re not meant for the cats, the cats will gladly make use of them. Studs should be 16” apart on center. So make the shelves in lengths divisible by 8” to ensure at least one is anchored into a stud. And the force of a cat jumping and landing is going to be significantly greater than the weight. Going to a carpet store and getting scraps is the cheapest option. Just avoid looped carpet. But the sky is the limit when it comes to picking a style out. And a friend of mine has a bridge across the hallway that his cat loves. It’s her 360 point to know what’s going on in the whole house.

    We installed 8 foot sections of walnut tree to our cat wall. It is awesome to watch them scale it. Totally agree about the forces. I have large cats that are over 20 lbs and we put everything into the studs. You get hit in the face, and we have them jumping over us while we are sitting on the sofa. Very unnerving to have a missile with claws zooming over you! Location matters! ❤️
