This was one of the most played songs in 1979. To say it was everywhere and played constantly all day is likely an uderstatement. I always felt that it was designed for roller skating which was HUGE at the time. Imagine skating around a rink while this song played, and lip syncing "don't bring me dooooooowwwwn." 1979 had some incredible hit songs. Thanks for sharing one of them! ~Be Blessed

Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra (also known as Mr. Blue Sky) is an album of re-recordings by Jeff Lynne of hits by Electric Light Orchestra. It was issued in 2012 by Frontiers simultaneously with Lynne's cover album Long Wave. On the version we just heard its the original Jeff Lynne - vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer[6] Bev Bevan - drums, percussion[6] Richard Tandy - grand piano, synthesizer, electric piano, clavinet[6] Kelly Groucutt - bass, vocals[6]version

Unfortunately, Jeff ditched the strings that made the band so unique. The band sputtered as a result by the time the 80s rolled in with Calling America being their last hit, barely scraping into the Top 40 in '86.
Next needs to be "Showdown". One that I also love that I don't see mentioned much is "Sweet Talkin' Woman" if you're looking for something upbeat and fun--it's probably their funnest hit, but some people are put off by the disco aspects.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS song. The best from 1979! Long live ELO, they will be on Tour this Summer and Fall of 2024 in the US and Canada.
The songs that immediately spring to my mind are "Tightrope," "Strange Magic" and "Fire on High." (You could also double back and put "So Fine" in front of "Livin' Thing," as the album intended.)
The first ELO song I purchased was "Showdown" as a 45 rpm. The tone of that song is pure angst in the best way possible. I still love hearing it today. My favorite song of theirs is "All Over the World". It's a feel-good pop anthem that withstands the test of time.
"Do Ya" and "Poker" are two ELO songs that represent their harder rock'n'roll side that you guys haven't really touched. "Poker" was always an album track, but "Do Ya" was a single and got plenty of airplay.

Lol, I only learned this a few years ago but Jeff used groos while writing it. It wasn’t meant to be permanent but ended up staying anyway. It’s a German word for “greetings”, iirc. But the fun part is, Jeff actually sang “Bruce” at a lot of concerts because that’s what people thought it was. ☺️
Their instrumental Fire on High is classic.
Fire On High is one of the best instrumentals in rock & roll.
At least two of their later hits “Hold On Tight To Your Dreams,” and “Rock And Roll Is King” are both last song on their respective albums. Another similarity is that all three songs sound like they are add-ons.
You need to try “Sweet Talking Woman”.
Sweet Talking Woman is another amazing song!
Went to An ELO concert way back when.. ELO did this song it was emotionally moving to see and hear the entire audience sing every word and dance like maniacs for this song.
The extra length glues the song into your brain. Once heard; not forgotten!

Hard to believe this song is over 40 years old. In fact, I was 10 when it came out, and would rock out with my friends at the roller rink on a Saturday night.
Jeff Lynne (ELO) is the true master of Rock and Pop music. From 1972 to 1986 (14 years) ELO accumulated more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band in the world, and also generated the third most UK and US separate Top 40 hits. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Light_Orchestra_discography
"Shine a Little Love" from this album is also an underrated classic
This is one of those rare songs that I cannot listen to without listening to it at least one more time, if not 3 or 4 or more times. And if I can't listen to it again, it plays non-stop in my head (and that's not a bad thing!). Tears For Fears has a couple of songs that have the same effect on me as well. I just love this song, it's so fun and delightful. This is what glam would've sounded like had it been a thing in the late 70s. And it needs to be played loud to be properly heard. Wonderful, just wonderful.
This song owned the airwaves in ‘79/‘80. It was and still is one of my favorite songs.
10538 Overture, Can’t Get It Out Of My Head, Showdown, Ma Ma Belle, Wild West Hero, Tightrope, Do Ya, So Fine…so many great tunes.
Jeff Lynne is the lead singer and also a member of the greatest super group ever, The Travelling Wilburys , along with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison
From ELO to the Traveling Wilbury’s. Good old Jeff Lynne!
" Midnight....on the water....I saw the oceans daughter...singing as she called my name.....and I can't get it out off my head "...best ELO song
My parents used to drop me off at the skating rink on the weekend and this song was always played on the jukebox. Really took me right back to1980.
If Andy wants something bright, "Sweet Talkin Woman" is a great mix of disco and the mr blue sky style, I would also suggest "Tightrope" because the intro is so good
Happy Wednesday! Andy, you were on the right track when you said this song was made for moving - this was tremendously popular at the skating rink! 🛼🛼 When you’re grooving to this, those extra verses don’t matter. And the one thing I thought for sure would be a top criticism for you both, the “non-solo” solo, wasn’t even on your radar. “Do Ya” is a fun song and would likely be “bright” enough for your next reaction!

Guys, don’t forget this is 1979 music. It suited the time. I saw them live in 1978, when they still had the 2 cellists and the show was banger right from the starting blocks. And I saw Roll Over Beethoven live….. Holy f.k balls, what a blast!!!!
Definitely feeling the Beatles influence. Jeff Lynne from ELO as a massive fan and even ended up in a band with George Harrison down the road.
You should check out "All Over The World" by ELO.
I was a teenager when this song was all over the radio airwaves. It was exciting then and still is, now. It's all about the production, I think.
Fun fact: Jeff Lynne wanted a 'banger' for the album, so he sent the band out to play football. He then took a loop of drums from another track and laid down piano's and guitars. When he had the tune, he called them back in to record it and wrote the lyrics on the fly. The word Gross was later changed to Bruce when he sings it live, because that what's the crowd sang, so he figured he'd join in with them.
So many great ELO songs. I'll add a few others that I didn't see mentioned but are just as worthy: Standing in the Rain, Shangri-La, Big Wheels, and Wild West Hero
@valelavidavivir5842

One of my favorite parts of the song is when they double time the”no’s” in one of later choruses. It’s just so unexpected.
I remember when this song came out and was played all over the radio. I couldn't get enough of it. I am glad to say I lived thru generations of some of the best music ever made and it was great!!! I'd do it all over because it was so much fun.
You need to hit "Do Ya" great opening guitar!
Great reactions guys...so much to enjoy with Jeff and ELO. ''Fire on High', 'Dreaming of 4000,' 'Across the Border' , 'Waterfall' and 'Wild West Hero' I feel will give you a taste for more!
"Four Little Diamond's"...you will love the count in.
"Do Ya!" That's the one to go to for bright, happy, and upbeat. Love that song!
Try ELO's version of "Roll Over Beethoven", it's by far the best version of the song!
Yes!!...GUYS! You MUST MUST MUST..Check out ALL OVER THE WORLD. The song was used in the film Xanadu. I'd say half of the OST was ELO songs. The song Xa nadu was originally sung by Jeff, but felt Olivia Newton John would sound better singing it. Plus it fits during the end scene.

I was lucky that he added Xanadu to the set list in Nashville in 2019 because he didn't in other cities. Flashback to 1980 and he sounded awesome!
One of the best sounding harmonies from a harmony era.
Imagine being 11 and having this newly released on the radio. Freakin' AWESOME! I'm so happy to see you enjoying the music that is a reminder of time gone by for me. Rock on and keep up the great work! 😄
I'm excited too Andy!! It's a great Song. Definitely S tier in my opinion. I can always tell by your head banging and facial expressions that your digging it too!!! 😊 😊

You should check out side 3 of Out of the Blue, a song suite called "Concerto for a rainy day", which ends with blue skies, obviously 😉. On the way there you hear different shades of ELO's sound, all overlaid with these beautiful string arrangements evoking MGM musicals and George Gershwin. It's the quintessence of ELO!

So so so agree. They should just do the whole album, maybe on a livestream.

Yup...16 in 1979 and a big fan of this band.
Jeff and the guys just have this strange magic! 😆😆 ✌❤
Though a fun song, this was never one of my ELO favorites because it is missing the interplay between rock and classical instruments. Their two best songs are unfortunately not going to have the listener numbers on Spotify that A&A use to weed out selections: 1. Tightrope and 2. Fire on High. *Tightrope* has been reacted to by other major music reactors, which have all LOVED it. *Fire On High* was played a lot on rock radio stations and was even the theme to a CBS TV sports show back in the 70s, but people don’t recognize it from the title. The only rock instrumental of the era that eclipses it for me is “Frankenstein”

High praise indeed!!! 😎
i look at the "extra verse" as when you're out cruisin' in your car and you don't want the ride to end. you wanna take it once more around the block. i find that in a lot of rock songs. this song could have easily ended after the breakdown part, but i'm glad it didn't.
This song is upbeat and fun when you're doing something, but is repetitive when you sit down to listen to it. "Jungle" is one of their light-hearted, bright songs that's very fun. I'm sure you guys would enjoy it.
I was 16 in 1979 and we absolutely loved this song, excellent to dance to and sing along.
Jeff Lynne grew up on all that music you were describing, the early rock n roll and doo wop right before. He even did a solo album of covers of songs he listened to as a kid. Great stuff.
I can think of so many ELO songs that I like better. Their version of "Roll Over Beethoven" is really good.

Me too!
I grew up in the San Francisco bay area and spent much of my childhood trying to request songs from our LEGENDARY DJ WOLFMAN JACK. When I finally got through, this was my request in 79. You're Welcome San Fran.
ELO never disappoints!!! Says this 67 year old grandma! 🤣
I agree with Alex. If you're gonna drag out an ending you have to do it Supertramp style.
Possibly the catchiest tune by one of the most hook proficient bands ever. I remember this was one of the songs many rock fans disliked since it veered into disco territory - others included “Miss You” by the Stones and “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” by Rod Stewart. Please hit “Fire On High” from ELO when you’re in the mood for an instrumental.

Love ELO. Saw them live back in the early 80’s. Check out All Over The World.
I was 16 in '79. Definitely a party song!
