Don't Be Fooled--Jesus' Miracles in Mark Are Not to Show He is the Messiah

Most readers of the New Testament assume that the miracles of Jesus are to convince people that he is the Messiah. Not so in Mark, our earliest gospel! In fact, one could even say if your faith is based on the miracles you will fail to understand Mark's core message--what he calls the Secret of the Kingdom. In this short overview I introduce this issue--which is very thoroughly covered in the on-line Mark course.
Those who sign up for the Mark course are invited to a March 5, 2023, Noon, EST, private Zoom meeting with Q&A and discussion for two hours. Get the course and join us:

I think another reason Mark doesn't get as much attention as Matthew and Luke is that Mark doesn't include conception, birth , or childhood narratives. It _starts_ with Jesus' baptism, giving absolutely no attention to his life _before_ that moment, _and_ it ends with the women running from the tomb in fear...and never telling _anyone_ about the empty tomb. Further evidence that the authors of Matthew and Luke don't _get_ Mark is the fact that their narratives _add_ details seemingly designed to _satisfy the expectation_ of what the Messiah is _supposed_ to be.

@@youngknowledgeseeker I was thinking about this recently, and in my years as a martial artist, I've heard many legends about this or that Chinese fighter who defeated some Japanese fighter, only for the Japanese general overseeing the fight to order all witnesses killed, in order to preserve the honor and reputation of Japan. As with your question, I've always thought, "If nobody was left alive to _tell_ the story, how am I _hearing_ it?" Either somebody survived, or the story is...well...propaganda. I suppose, in the context of Mark, one could interpret/extrapolate that the women told nobody _immediately_ but perhaps _eventually_ mentioned it...maybe after _others_ reported seeing the risen Christ. However, to use a legal objection, this is speculation that assumes facts not in evidence (at least not in Mark, upon which the other Gospels are based). Thus, as with the martial arts legends, I'm left to conclude that the story of the resurrection...along with countless other Bible stories...is not factually accurate.

@@OmniphonProductions Yes, it's an "educated guess", I am inferring it. In fact, all history is inferring. For anyone reading, also keep in mind, Mark was written to already existing Christian audiences who already believed Jesus was resurrected. So I suggest it is reasonable to infer that he expects the audience to know the women eventually *did* speak up about this. They may not have been the initial ones to tell everyone else, but at some point did if not being the first.

Having said that, you make a solid point about writing for an audience that already believes the stories. I would only change one word of your most recent reply. The author of Mark...who was not actually Mark...likely expects the audience to _presume_ the women eventually told others.

The Gospel of Jesus was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them Friday 13th.

Mark is not only the first "written" Gospel; it is the most literary. Most readers miss that because that because they are expecting something very simple. But that is Peter's language, not Mark's. Mark takes Peter's simply phrased oral Gospel and makes it the core of his written Gospel, except he imposes on Peter's oral Gospel an organization (plot) and his own literary style. That is seen easily in the pericope Tabor mentions: Peter's confession and Jesus' response. The two are one pericope, as Tabor indicates, but they are not as simple as Tabor suggests. Jesus' reply "Get behind me Satan" is not a rebuke of Peter's confession but a correction. It is a point and counter point literary scheme. Point: Jesus is Messiah. Counter point: The Son of Man must suffer, be killed and rise again. The counter point is the correction of Peter's incomplete expectation of Messiah. Peter is not wrong. Mark depicts Jesus as Messiah from beginning to end. But it is a Messiah who came to serve not be served. " For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” That theme is visible everywhere in Mark and is spoken quite explicitly in many places. But it a mistake to think that service is the only facet of Messiah. Matthew presents Messiah as king. Luke as compassionate Savior. John as Son of God. Those are not contradictory but complementary. Together they present a full picture. I also think it is a mistake to think that Matthew overwrites Mark. There was a lot that Mark (Peter) did not include in his oral Gospel. There were others telling their memories of Jesus. Matthew did not need to depend upon Mark.

Since I don't have access to your course, I don't really know what you mean by the miracles (that is, IF they were literally miracles) not being intended to prove Jesus was the messiah. The Spirit of YHWH informed me to only believe the Gospels of John and Luke. It also informed me again that Matthew was written by a Rector. I had to look this word up. So at some time it was an adulterated work by someone who thought they new better or wanted to put across a Christian political narrative. Have had no mention on why not to trust the Gospel of Mark. To my understanding the Gospel of John is literally the Gospel of Christ. He is the Witness of Christ in the flesh Son of Man with the seven spirits of the Father Not the Holy Spirit alone but Spirit of Truth, Healing etc. as in Revelations. On the other hand Luke is also a witness but what i believe Christians don't get is, "What is he witness too?" They believe he supports Paul/Saul but on the contrary he witnesses the macabre behaviour of Paul in the Street, for example his disdain for people in the Holy Ghost (YHWH) warning him not to do certain things, shaving his head and continually showing Paul/Saul's own witness to himself in a contradictory lie. Why would Roman soldiers afraid to have injured a Roman citizen send him into the Jewish Priests and allow them to strike. attempt to strike him. So if John is the Witness for Christ is Luke Witness to the Antichrist. A lot of Paul's letters defamation against Peter and paranoia about people following him to undo his work, his humility (nothing in line with an anointed). Nothing to counter any of his allegations. All the time no accepted or remaining letters from the Twelve apostles (Jesus anointed them in the Way as he was in the I am the Way of the Father, they're not Christian). Could it even be they who were undoing his work. Satan tempted Jesus in the desert and said he had authority to give to who at another time. Jesus warned of someone that will follow. Basically should Gentiles be curcumsised and how much Greek philosophy paganism did Paul use in his writings to convert Greeks to worship his new Jesus Christ against all that Jesus said to Satan in the desert.

Deuteronomy 13:1-18 (KJV) If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proves you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee. If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you. If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying, Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known; Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you; Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword. And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again. And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers; When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.

These represent the resurrection in Isaiah 40:3 - A worm attacks the gourd plant. I am a worm and not a man, Ps 22:7. The sun beats down on his head. Thus begins the way of the Lord in the desert. like a shoot from the parched (barren, dry, desert) earth (Isa 53:2 NABO) These represent the sacrifice, day of the Lord, wrath of the lamb, day of vengeance AS judgment, being 'made to be sin' for which comes the need for the way of the Lord in the desert. There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! (Luk 12:49-50 NABO) For by my wrath a fire is enkindled that shall rage to the depths of the nether world, Consuming the earth with its yield, and licking with flames the roots of the mountains. (Deu 32:22 NABO) Down I went to the roots of the mountains; the bars of the nether world were closing behind me forever (Jon 2:7 NABO) Who will go down into the netherworld (abyss)?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." (Rom 10:7 NABO)

The Jewish religious leaders wanted a sign not to convince themselves but to test him. There were plenty of signs being witnessed. Jesus knew their hearts were stubborn (cf Luke 16:31). What Jesus instructed for John the Baptizer was for a different purpose. John was the Elijah promised who would pave the way for the Messiah. If one reads John's words, it will be clear.

Reading the Bible should make the reader a master of discernment between Good and Evil. Unfortunately most readers can't tell the difference between Genesis 1 God and Genesis 2 Devil. Try using the NOG translation. It's important to read the Bible with the Names of God unaltered/unchanged. If you're ever unsure that Yahweh Elohim from Genesis 2 is the Devil then simply search for usages of the terms Ruach Elohim and Ruach Yahweh (be sure you're using the NOG translation). Polar opposite Spirits from polar opposite entities.

I love so much of what you do James, but I think you miss the humanity and simpleness of the disciples of Jesus, and the confusion they faced with trying to understand who Jesus was, especially when Jesus instructed his disciples not to tell others that he is the promised anointed one of YHVH. There is also a danger of viewing Mark in isolation and adhering to the view it is the earliest text, and claiming that Matthew and Luke copied it. Please note, I am acutely aware of the scholarly arguments in favour of this view but I personally don’t agree with it. Few people mention that the MSS evidence for Mark is the weakest of all 4 gospels which is strange considering it is meant to be the earliest. More broadly, the NT testifies that Jesus is the prophet like Moses, starting first with Philip, then Jesus himself, then Peter, Stephen and Paul, and I believe Jesus again in the book of Rev when he is described as having a sword in his mouth ie the word of God. The unique thing about the prophecy in deut 18:15-18 is that it gives us an objective series of metrics to judge if someone is the prophet like Moses. Moses did many great miracles. Moses had an extraordinary relationship with YHVH. Moses was an Israelite etc. I won’t go through all the attributes one would have to display before one could be considered to be in the class of ‘a prophet like Moses’ . Simply displaying one or two attributes does not in my humble opinion qualify anyone to claim that title. Finally, the critical distinction between Moses and the prophet that god almighty would raise up is not that this prophet would also do great miracles like Moses, set his people free, but this prophet would have the word of God infused in his being in a way no human had previously experienced. The miracles are an important part to this claim by Jesus, not directly to bring the anointed one in detail but rather in bring the prophet like Moses, who was it transpires also the one YHVH would call his anointed son.

I agree with James. The Gospel of Mark doesn't try to show Jesus is the Messiah. I think it serves to show Jesus as YHWH. For example, Psalm 107 says that YHWH calls the storms with his voice and Job 9:8 say that YHWH walks upon the waters. Powerful stuff. I think Mark jumps over the entire Messiah issue and goes straight to YHWH is with us.

And the Pharisees along with the Sadducees came forth and began to question with him, desiring him that he would shew them a sign, tempting him, saying, Master, we would see a sign from heaven. And Jesus sighed deeply in his spirit and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? And he answering them saith, When it is evening ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. O Ye hypocrites can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern the signs of this time? And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, a greater than Jonas is here. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished Then goeth he and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth

Jesus was announced as king of Israel in that choice between Jesus and Barabbas. Quickly said, Pilot dressed Jesus up as King, Pilot presented Jesus to the Sanhedrin and high priest among the crowd as "their King". Told the crowd to choose to crucify "their King" or Barabbas. The Saducees and High Priest chose "their king" Jesus to be crucified and instigated the Jewish crowd to choose "their King" to be crucified..... and so the Priesthood anointed Jesus as their king in order for him to be executed. And Pilat published this fact above Jesus head at a time when Jerusalem was most crowded of Jews from all over the realm. What this accomplished was to legalize according to Torah law Jesus' amended covenant and make irrelevant all burdensome Talmudic rules. I think Jesus and Pilat planned it together. Neet trick on the Sanhedrin huh.

The Idea of there being one "Satan" is an incorrect assumption by most people who read the Bible. The word "saw tawn" the pronunciation of the Hebrews for what is translated as "Satan" simply means, opponent, adversary, or enemy. In the English translations it was capitalized as if it were a name, but really it is a descriptor of the personality and its properties in relation to in this case Jesus. In an example of this today we would refer to a competitive nation opposing our nation as "the enemy." As far as I can see, the word first appears in the Hebrew text we call the Bible in I Chronicles 21:1. When David is convinced, he should count or number the people of Israel in direct opposition to God's command in Leviticus. When Jesus says this to Peter, He is not calling Peter "the Devil," He is saying Peter's expression of his feelings on the matter are opposed to the will of the Father, and the path set by the Father for Jesus to walk out. The Apostle Paul speaks of this very thing in depth when He states the "carnal" man is "enmity" against the Father and speaks about the "crucifixion" of our fleshly or human oriented thinking. Instead, Paul exhorts us to live by faith and "walk in the Spirit of God," being transformed into the "mind of Christ." In another place He says to be imitators of God as His dear children. Something interesting that I came across in a conversation with someone involved in the occult. They laughed at the idea of the existence of a spirit named "Satan." They emphatically stated that there are many spirits with many names but no Satan. In fact, all who are in opposition to the person of the Creator Father and His Son are satan, (opponents, adversaries or enemies) whether they be flesh or spirit.

That instance struck me as one where there could be a double-meaning, not a contradictory one, but rather that by saying he would die in order to keep Yahusha from death it essentially played into the grander idea of 'Satan'.

God send himself to Jesus of nazareth as a spirit that possess his body..thats why when Jesus of nazareth answered them "im not demon-possessed" means he was possessed but not by a demon but the spirit of the Father.. when peter rebuke Jesus, it was satans work to stop Jesus of nazareth to fulfill the scripture..so he will fail and bring the faith of the people..because peoples faith that time is they depends to the scripture that if the scripture happen, they will believe..that is why Jesus of nazareth need to fulfill the scripture..and fulfilling the scripture will realized the truth of the old testament lies.. this the reason why other people who stays from the old teaching doesnt want to believe the Jesus of nazareth as messiah or son of God..if you read the bible, you will understand why Jesus of nazareth never said he was a God..because the Father is the true Jesus Christ..

Jesus was a failed apocalyptic prophet. Jesus as a failed apocalyptic prophet is the general consensus of critical scholarship, even critical Christian scholars like Dale Allison. The Son of Man (Jesus himself?) was supposed to be an end of the world arbiter, as Bart Ehrman points out in his lecture referenced below, and as the Bible states he was supposed to come *within the lifetime* of Jesus’s followers. *It didn't happen.* Read the article from the former Christian apologist and Tim O'Neill (former Christian), who has been studying the scholarship and history for decades, referenced below as well. *Jesus falsely prophesied his return in the 1st century* For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; ***and then he shall reward every man according to his works.*** Truly I tell you, ***some who are standing here will not taste death*** before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom Matthew 16:27-28 Truly I tell you, ***some who are standing here*** will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God Luke 9:27 Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Mark 13:30 The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Matthew 24:29-34 There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. When you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Luke 21:25-32 *Jesus promised to return over 2, 000 years ago and he still hasn’t.* Jesus and the angels never appeared from Heaven, the stars never fell from the sky, none of these things happened. Nothing he prophesied happened. ***Apologists can try to spin this, but the simple fact is that Jesus was either wrong or misquoted.*** According to the Bible that makes Jesus a false prophet or misquoted (and if Jesus is misquoted than the Bible is not inerrant or the word of God) How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord? If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken Deuteronomy 18:21-22 *Jesus falsely prophesied to the high priest and the Sanhedrin* Jesus also falsely prophesied to the high priest and the Sanhedrin (assemblies of either twenty-three or seventy-one rabbis appointed to sit as a tribunal) You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and ***coming on the clouds of heaven*** Matthew 26:64 Mark 14:62 Except the high priest and the Sanhedrin never saw Jesus sitting at the right hand side of God, or coming on the clouds of heaven, or any such thing. *Jesus falsely prophesied to Nathaniel* Jesus also falsely prophesied to Nathanael when he declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” Jesus said, You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that. He then added, ***“Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man*** John 1:50-51 *Nathanael never saw any such thing. Neither did anyone else.* The following quote from Stephen L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University- Sacramento, completes this point with a devastating argument. *Jesus did not accomplish what Israel’s prophets said the Messiah was commissioned to do:* He did not deliver the covenant people from their Gentile enemies, reassemble those scattered in the Diaspora, restore the Davidic kingdom, or establish universal peace (cf.Isa. 9:6-7; 11:7-12:16, etc.). Instead of freeing Jews from oppressors and thereby fulfilling God’s ancient promises-for land, nationhood, kingship, and blessing- *Jesus died a “shameful” death, defeated by the very political powers the Messiah was prophesied to overcome.* Indeed, the Hebrew prophets did not foresee that Israel’s savior would be executed as a common criminal by Gentiles, *making Jesus’ crucifixion a “stumbling block” to scripturally literate Jews.* (1 Cor.1:23) Watch *Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet, Historical Lecture - Bart D. Ehrman* ------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, look up the following. *"End Times - Evil Bible .com"* *"The End of All Things is At Hand - The Church Of Truth"* *"ex-apologist: On One of the Main Reasons Why I Think Christianity is False (Reposted)"* *"ex-apologist: Notes: Assessing The Case for an Apocalyptic Jesus in Ehrman’s Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium"* *"Jesus the Apocalyptic Prophet - History for Atheists"* (Tim O'Neill is a former Christian and is familiar with most of the Biblical scholarship.
