Don't Add CalMag to Your Cannabis Plants Unless You Know About This...

Here's how to tell if the problem is really a calcium or magnesium deficiency. And what you need to know about how calcium and magnesium work together at your root zone. If you don't know about this, you're wasting money and likely hurting your plants.

LED grown plants on average require much more magnesium than sun or HID grown plants. IMO this is why you hear so much more about cal-mag products than you did 5-10+ years ago.

Running coco drip with RO water, I used to measure my cal mag but lately have just been adding a random glug from the bottle when I mix nutes in my 20 gallon bucket. Never had a hint of a cal mag problem, but maybe that's because my nutes (CNS 17) also have cal mag. My point, don't worry about it too much, but make sure there is at least some cal mag available at all times and you're good to go. BTW, I also stopped using PH up with amazing results, I just start at 6.2 and let the PH fall until I mix up the next batch of nutes, sometimes it falls to ~5.0 which the data says is way too acidic, but it works and the plants love it.

@@ScottyReal420 my plants are small with no bag appeal but as raggedy assed grower as I am they're still better than anything I paid for the past fifty years. Started this growing thing in September (Minnesota legalized effective 8/1/23), finished three photoperiod as my first grow and ran two autos that are now both in flower on my second. So far every seed I planted has germinated and prospered. The hardest thing about growing so far was replacing the laundry tub faucet to handle a reverse osmosis and add an electrical sub panel and a couple 20 amp circuits. My grows aren't perfect looking but they do their job thanks to the information that people like you put out there. I'm a late starter, did my first grow at 72 and am proof that anyone can do this.

It unfortunately would not be an easy add to the recharge and when it comes to the grow dots there is only so much room in the formula so to add any thing requires things to be taken away to make room. I would suggest just finding a goo source of Silica like Silicium from Phive8 and add it to your water.

Take this from someone who has been involved in drug development for ion channel modulators: To make things a little clearer. The big problem with both is not that they are competing for the same negatively charged ions in the soil when it comes to absorption, because the neutral salt itself cannot be taken up. The problem is that most ion channels (which facilitate the uptake of these ions) are often not perfectly selective, since the selectivity filter and activation gate often allow multiple ions to pass through the same pore. The problem is that only both ions compete for the same channel. In return, the uptake is limited. It's exactly the same mechanism for many channels in all living organisms. This is the same problem you would have as a human if you took magnesium and calcium supplements at the same time.

I add alot of oyster shell flower to my soil every time I amend it. It never burns the plants, and always allows proper nitrogen uptake. Leaves are all rich green, not yellowish, or too dark of green. If I see tips burning, I may add some liquid Cal Mag once a week during flowering. Only if the tips are burning though.

Better understanding the nutrients on a molecular level and what they do and how they do it make it much easier to play around and have fun with them. Hi all! SInce 1st of april, it is allowed to grow 3 plants in Germany, so I started a grow. Now, a question popped up: As I use rainwater to water my flowers, I wonder how much CalMag I need to use in my water. I guess, there is absolutely none in rainwater, so what would be the right amount? Is the amount given on the bottle calculated with tap water? And is there a time in flower, when I should stop giving calmag? Although I know, that my first grows will be far from perfect, I want to minimize mistakes and get the best result with small effort. One plant shows signs of Calcium deficiency as far as I could find out. This brought me to dig deeper into that topic. Thanks for help and keep on releasing that great and helpful content. Edit: btw, the plant showing these signs is an autoflowering one and now in week 2 of bloom as far as I can tell Greetings from Germany

I've only ever seen one true deficiency - where you really need to add element missing - and that's nitrogen. Everything else 90% of the time is due to poor environment conditions, water regime, too much of certain element, that's blocking something else. Calcium bonds easily to just about anything, Phosphorus, Sulphur, locks out magnesium as well. And I've seen this way too often: since it's passive, and can only be uptaken through transportation/ moving water from the root zone, high humidity leads to calcium deficiency as well. And that's when the grower, not realising the underlying issue, starts adding Cal-Mag, and that's also when the true nightmare starts cause pretty soon everything else goes to sht Watch your plants, learn to recognise what they need. Stop blindly adding things just because it says so on the bottle

I also use coco which eats a little calcium as times goes by. You have to account for the plant and the coco. I add prilled cal mag to Grow Dots and I have seen excellent results. Cal mag is for coco growers mostly. It is a quick fix for coco growers most of the time. Use some prilled slow release cal mag and you won't need any liquid. The plants takes what it needs.

Calcium is used in conjunction with Nitrogen in Veg. After Veg Calcium isn’t used nearly as much by the plant. Magnesium is essentially a site multiplier for whatever stage of growth the plant is in, in veg it helps more leaves grow, in early flower it produces more bud nodes, as flowering continues helps produce more calyxes and more hairs per calyx and more resin glands as well. Magnesium to me is just as essential as NPK and actually more essential than N through the whole grow because Nitrogen is only required for the first half. Problem is that Companies always attach calcium to magnesium for some reason and what happens as flowering proceeds the plant needs more Magnesium but isn’t using the Calcium and the calcium builds up and becomes hard to break down and starts causing lockouts the more you use Cal-Mag to fix Mag deficiency in later flowering. You want a product that has calcium attached to nitrogen so when your done vegging your not adding not necessary nutrients. Similarly look for Magnesium attached to Phosphorus or Potassium for flowering to reduce calcium build up.

Calcium is essential all the through the grow and even more so in flower . Ever seen a tomato or pepper deficient in calcium during frutiing ? It becomes undeveloped undersized and blossom end rot. If the plant didn’t use a ton of calcium in flower that’s a site fire way to get bud rot

  • @deltaromeo5542

    @deltaromeo5542

    5 ай бұрын

@@timpage5021 it absolutely isn’t. It’s way more heavy in Veg because it’s attached to the nitrogen use. Once you stop using nitrogen you don’t need nearly as much calcium. Some people use N through the whole grow, some people stop after the plant is done stretching and new leaf growth stops. Nitrogen isn’t necessary in late flower at all in my style of growing so that means I also need to drastically reduce calcium use or else it will build up. It’s an absolute fact the style I grow. If you grow like I do the cal-mag combo becomes a problem because I stop nitrogen use which lowers calcium intake requirements. Calcium is essential for the plant to process nitrogen, those 2 go hand in hand. If your using as much calcium in flower as you do in veg then your building up calcium because the plants uses it in like a 3/1 or 4/1 ratio with nitrogen if remember correctly.

@@deltaromeo5542 cut calcium out in flower and see what happens. You lack basic knowledge of nutrient requirements for fruiting plants. Cannabis , tomatoes , peppers and eggplant for example all require the same levels of nutrients for optimal plant health especially when fruiting . There’s a reason why all the top growers and big commercial facilities use line ups like Jacks , Masterblend , Athena , Front Row , because they all use calcium nitrate for their calcium and nitrogen source. Big Ag uses the same calcium based fertilizer to feed the world.

Every time I had a cal mag deficiency I used molasses ( 1/2 tsp molasses to 1 litre of water ) . Works every time. I have never bought "cal mag" from a gardening store ever .

But you don't want "super slow release" if you are battling calcium deficiency, you need it fixed quickly. Try calcium acetate. Life changer.

I recently got lil cal mag deficiency cause I add phosphorus before I flip and too much can lock it out so I just flipped her so she could burn it off rq🤙
