Don Rich and the Buckaroos - Orange Blossom Special

Музыка

Recorded sometime in the early 60's. 63', 64' or 65'd be my guess. DDR on the Fiddle, Buck on Acoustic, Tom Brumley on Steel, Doyle Holly on Bass and Willie Cantu on the Drums

I was a country music performer for over 50 years before retiring my group (Country Tradition) in 2004. Don Rich was one of the most talented musicians I've ever known. His talent was inborn. The whole Rich family was musically gifted. And yes, that was him playing Orange Blossom Special; and he could play anything else on the fiddle that was ever written. What a loss when he was taken from us at such an early age. RIP, my dear friend Don Rich.

Heck of a run there, John! Although I just realised your comment is 12 years old, and you might not be with us mortals here. Let's see, 50 years of music, retired almost 20 years ago, if you were just a wee bit 20 year old when you started, you're in your 90's. Give us a holler Mr. LIVINGston!

You could see how much Buck Owens and Don Rich loved making music together. Don was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1974, aged only 32 ~ this had a huge impact on Buck, understandably and very sadly.

This particular video is through the magic of editing. I'm not sure the original clip still exists, the tapes recorded over is what I've learned. But what it is is a compilation of Don on fiddle video pieces patched together as if it was originally recorded with the music. But you can tell, the strokes of the bow, Brumley's picking, nothing is well synched. Someone did some good work trying to make it look like it was recorded in composite. Having said all that, I still love it. Orange Blossom Special is a classic, Don was a master on the fiddle, and I'm guessing the audio recording of him is real, just with visuals laid down with it. Someone on here was speculating what year. I'm thinking it was 1966, based on the style of suits they're wearing and when the Ranch Show was being created. But I don't think it was '63-'65.

I must have watched 40 versions of this song on you tube looking for a good, clearly identifiable "Orange Blossom Special" without a bunch of improvisation and showing off and without 10 minutes of people blabbing before they start playing. And I am SO glad to say that I have FINALLY FOUND IT!! Glory Hallelujah and Thank God for these no nonsense, excellent musicians and thank you, whoever loaded this, for sharing it with us!! I was just trying to show my 27 year old son how awesome this fiddle tune is; I didn't know it would take me all evening to find a great rendition of it. But THIS was worth the search. Cheers!

Which is why most bluegrass festivals don't allow the Orange Blossom Special or Duelling Banjos. Both are crowd favorites & putting different styles & tempos to the music has been known to start fights in the crowd.

Well thanks to whoever took the time and effort to put this together, so we can see Don playing the fiddle at the same time we hear him. He had such a four-square way of playing ANYTHING: Always perfect. I love this straight-ahead rendition of OJS...it's really perfect, including the synchopation and follow-on beats that are missing in many other renditions. Also Don's use of the light reverb making the sound so evocative of the distant train...just perfect, as usual.

It used to be that you could go to the back of the Ryman Auditorium and go up some steps and you would be behind the stage of the Opry. A stranger came in by this way and someone asked him who he was and it turned out that he wrote the Orange Blossom Special. He wanted to meet Johnnie Cash which had a big hit with this song.
