One of my favorite things about this interview was when Don said something about the work of musical artists and how they should never "burlesque" themselves, that they must stick with what they've aimed to do and not care whether the audience likes it. How refreshing! Here is a man who has the admiration of multitudes, but was never particularly aiming to be popular. He got there by being true to himself and continues to be so. Not only is this a very attractive character trait, but it's a comfort to know that someone who had the talent to be even more successful by the world's dictates chose to be true. Thank you, Don McLean, for being the person you are. Your life is like gold that has been refined. I am so enriched just by listening to your dialogue in this, and other, interviews. Oh and your poetry and music is so phenomenal. It makes even more sense now that I've heard you speak about your life.

Don is exactly 10 years older than me. October 2. The song that really gets me is "Starry Night," possible the most perfectly crafted lyrics for the most painful lament for any artist. He understands the pain of death. Great catch by Dan Rather, someone I'm actually not very fond of. The pie shop to American Pie. wow.

I am dating myself, but I can remember when Don's great song, "American Pie" came-out and I thought it was very clever and cool!
