The “contract” you’re referring to was “Eagles Limited” and it included Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon. In other words, no sidemen or hired guns, they were all equal partners. Of course Glenn and Don drove Bernie of the group before Hotel California, and Joe Walsh stepped in as a hired gun, with no voting rights. After Hotel California was released they drove Randy out and in came Timothy, another hired gun. So the only three remaining partners of Eagles Limited were Henley, Frey and Felder. Then through the following years they turned on Felder, treating him as a sideman, withholding financial information etc, Felder decided mot to leave the group as the others did, so they concocted a way to fire him. Ive read Felder’s book Heaven and Hell, and I believe his version of the story.

Personally I'm glad he finally took a hit. The way they screwed Don Felder over is absolutely disgusting. Both Don Henley and Glenn Frye are assclowns. Those two with Irving started the ridiculous amount concert tickets cost now because of their reunion tour. Henley copyright strikes anyone who ever mentions the Eagles it seems. Sure it's his property but how was it made available in the 1st place. If it was so valuable which it is, shouldn't he have had it locked away somewhere safe. You nailed it, he knows that contract will destroy every lie they have put out in the Felder case. So seeing him lose this one put a huge smile on my face. Hopefully it's one of many more to come. I haven't gone to see the Eagles since they screwed Don Felder over. Him and Joe Walsh were the reason I would go. Great video thanks for this update.

Certain fans of Eagles annoy me if they regurgitate "Henley and Frey wrote the lyrics and isnt that more important?" Then tell me this: if Leadon never invites Felder into the band thus causing that accident of Genius that is Felders base of the track for starters and then impresses Henley and Frey to pen the lines creating a solid mega hit and album titled around it, there is no Hotel California.

The way I see the Don Felder case: he was brought into the band when the Eagles hadn’t hit the big time yet, and then the contract that basically said one for all and all for one was signed. Then they hit the big time, and all of a sudden Glenn and Don H. figured that since they started the band and wrote the majority of the songs, they should get way more than a 1/5 cut. It is no coincidence in my opinion they then started to get got rid of Bernie and Randy really fast in a very unclassy way, with violence even. Felder was tried to get rid of too, even before the Long Beach incident, but he was a bit harder to get rid of. After the reunion, Don and Glenn thought they could shake up the percentages, but Felder rightfully pointed them at the 1974 contract again. From what I think, that was the moment they wanted to get him out against all costs because they were well aware he was right, and it would cost them (and Azoff) money. It is probably also the reason why Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmitt were never full members of the band, but merely hired hands on the payroll. Oh and off-topic: Hotel California? It is about the Playboy Mansion in my opinion. Going through the lyrics it all adds up for me.

  • @chrisvanuden

This occured to me after seeing the documentary Secrets of Playboy. Like how the Bunnies were not allowed to live off the premises (just like prisoners are..) hence the line “we are all just prisoners here”. They danced with the male visitors all the time to entertain them and had to attent party’s to also entertain these men (a lot of pretty pretty boys, in reality a lot of old men, which doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, or simply would have given away what the song really was about), the captains hat Hef wore all the time, and there were mirrors on the ceiling. And they probably drank champagne on ice too 😉. And the last line? If you were a part of this lifestyle in that particular time, it would stick with you for always I reckon. It stayed with these women forever, and not in a good way, like the doc clearly shows. Don Henley stated in The History of The Eagles doc that the songs was about going from innocence to experience, which also seems to apply to a lot of these young women who came to California to chase their dreams, and ended up in a totally different position. To me, it critiques the hedonistic lifestyle at the PM from an outsiders point of view, that there is a dark side to it all that is not apparent from the get-go when he first arrives at the PM. So yeah, maybe just an assumption on my part, but it seems to make sense.

I think Don Felder got totally ripped off, because he was not only a full member of the band, but his solos made a lot of Eagles songs famous. For example, would "One of The Nights" be the same without that iconic guitar solo? No, it certainly would not. Would "Hotel California" be the same without that guitar duel between him and Joe Walsh? Again, no. Frey and Henley were great musicians but ruthless, backstabbing businessmen. Why anyone would work with anyone known to screw people in business dealings is beyond me...

The issue at hand is, is writing lyrics for songs more important than improvising guitar solos to create great songs? To follow Henley & Frey’s line of thinking….coming up with lyrics is more important than the guitar riffs that Felder provided. This is a thorny issue for certain, but in my view, Felder’s contributions were just as important as the lyric writing.

Giving Joe the benefit of the doubt, I think he knew that position in the band was going to be filled by someone, and that it could be a total game changer in his life....giving him the structure he needed personally. He had (addictive behavior) baggage going into it and was smart enough to accept the authority telling him, "You fuck up once, and you're gone". If he'd passed on that job, I don't think he'd have gotten clean, and would have likely died years ago.

You actually stated the reason why Don Henley and Glenn Frye both wanted Don Felder out of.the group because they were the only true members of the Eagle's left and they knew they had to split the royalties and they knew they had split the monies with him so they like every downright dirty employer does, is find a way to fire them and they gave one heck of a lousy reason. Lowdown in my book. Yet Don Felder has a clear conscience and holds his head up high and conducts himself in an upstanding way. I actually believe that Don Henley knew that Don Felder was a better and more decent human being and disliked him and was jealous and insecure about that very fact.. I saw them in the first year that Joe Walsh was with them and after that I dropped them like a lead balloon because they were the very first supergroup that actually put out massive ticket prices to go see a them in concert. I have felt they really have no allegiance to their fans and just see them as a major for profit in their pockets only. I think the Flying Burritos ( first group I ever saw) has them pegged right from the beginning.I was totally surprised when easy going Vince Gill joined the group. I am sure it just eases his back pocket and gives him more exposure. You can't blame a man for that. It's time ( past) for them to disband and go hang out in one if your five houses. I have been done with donating to them. We need it more than they do and the 70's are unfortunately long over. Finally, I just believe Don Henley's karma is just catching up to him. Very good songwriter with or without the Eagles but a very unscrupulous person.

No question that Felder was hosed; he was an officer of the corporation and was given the ol' heave ho' by Henley and Frey. I agree with Michael Noland's assessments of Henley and Frey. I disagree with Noland on his opinion of Joe Walsh. Word has it that Henley and Frey offered Joe a full partnership but Joe turned it down. He did not want to get into politics with Henley, Frey and Irving Asshole. Wisely Joe knew his own royalties from his solo career and the James Gang ensured his financial stability and future income. At the time he joined the Eagles, Joe was probably more interested in drinking and drugging than money and banking. I have a sense that Walsh measured Henley and Frey's character and disposition then correctly decided getting all the way into bed with these guys would be a disaster in the long run. Given the success of the Eagles' tours and comeback tours, Joe Walsh was yanking 7 figure incomes every year without the hassle of dealing with Henley and Frey. Being a "hired gun" has its advantages over partnerships.

I think both Henley and Frey are/were unpleasant people to deal with. Talented as heck though.

Well at this point, Frey is much easier to get along with.

Henley played drums and sang backing vocals on Felder's "Heavy Metal" which is a great tune, recorded after the breakup in 1980. Felder played guitar on Henley's For My Wedding tune off his 2000 Inside Job album, a year before his termination, somehow leaving me to believe there was some type of comraderie between the 2. In Felder's book he mentions there was a moment after the breakup in 1980 that the other 4 considered continuing but it never happened. I think that simply because of Frey's jealousy of Felder, yes, jealousy, because before Felder joined the band their tunes were sleepy and sappy and he turned them into the rock band they wanted to be but couldn't because they were missing that one ingredient, which happened to be Don Felder. In the end I feel Henley, who always seemed to be a bit of a follower and not a leader, just went along with Frey to keep the peace, because even Frey and Henley had their issues too. Great band that will forever be tainted by the drama that they themselves created. Along with Azoff as well, the fidget.

Don Henley approached me in a club in Riverside CA. and accused me of stealing his bottle of Budweiser.... "Do you know who I am? I'm Don Henley! Don't you forget it!" I never forgot it,,,, what a jerk! That was thirty years ago and I remember it every time I hear his vocals,,,, treating music fans and, folks like myself a fellow musician (40 year bassist) like sub-humans is so distasteful. Shoulda' seen his face when I told him Gonna try and love again was my favorite Eagles song!... Don Henley,,, you suck!

Wow! Hemet guy here. I played a lotta gigs myself over the years around Riverside, San Berdoo and the Inland Empire, L.A., San Diego & Bakersfield... Which club in Riverside? I was in a 3-guitar rock & blues band called 'RZB' back in 1989 that opened for Molly Hatchet at the premier grand opening of a club called 'Prime Time' in Moreno Valley (on Heacock Ave) - Dave Hlubek showed up with 4 or 5 other garage band musicians passing themselves off as MH who didn't even know or like each other and they were terrible! They were fighting on stage, and they acted like idiots! You could tell they hadn't even rehearsed their songs and had never played together as a group. They got booed off the stage after patrons started throwing dinner rolls and beer bottles at them. The crowd wanted us to come back for another set but that didn't happen. Come to think of it that was around the same time drummer Dewey Martin grabbed a bunch of local band guys and booked themselves out as the 'newly reformed' Buffalo Springfield! They played at a club over there (don't think it was Prime Time) and a gig down in Palm Springs with some guys I played with over the years. Of course, Stephen Stills and Neil Young as well as Jim Messina and Richie Furay (who by then was already pastoring a Calvary Chapel church in Broomfield, CO) all got on the bandwagon with their lawyers to file an injunction against Dewey Martin to stop his charade. I met Dewey one time up in Poppet Flatts (in the mountains above Hemet & Banning) he was living in a cabin next door to Jody Reynolds who I was recording with up at his barn studio and Jody introduced us out by their out of bounds mailboxes on the road nearby. BTW - I always heard that Glenn and Don had camped up at Tahquitz Peak for a weekend when they wrote the lyrics to Hotel California - a place noted for witchy goings on with the likes of Timothy Leary and Charlie Manson as well as Jim Morrison (and Pentecostal hippie preacher Lonnie Frisbee!) up by the waterfalls where the water spins counterclockwise... there is some kind of strange energy up there near that peak and the waterfalls. I've seen some crazy stuff up there at the Grotto.

Don't recall the name of the club, the 80's were a blurr! We ran the same towns, Redlands to Ensenada Mexico and north to Ventura. Played a lot in Ventura Theatre, opened for Foghat, Pat Travers, Robin Thrower, and Paul Rogers on different occasions. I helped form a couple original bands in San Diego back in the early 1990's, Steal Dawn and Full Circle. Both bands are still together and playing gigs,,, good friends too. I escaped the social government of California in 2007 and moved to Pennsylvania....I play with a friends band at open mics now. Happy to sit in and enjoy sobor drug free veteran musicians while not staying up till midnight to practice, and haul band gear. Thanks for sharing your write up,,,

Whatever class of drummer he is, Don Henley is certainly a Class-A-hole. Definitely have to separate the art from the artist here.
