Don Felder & Glenn Frey Guitar Solo in the Style of I Can’t Tell You Why
Here’s one that’s styled after his solo in a similarly titled song - I Can’t Tell You Why. It's a nice, easy solo so you can learn to play in the style of Glenn Frey & Don Felder.
Don Felder was “the other guitarist” in the Eagles. With an amazing touch, note choice and bending technique, he played most of the Eagles most famous guitar solos. Probably his most famous are Hotel California and One of These Nights.
Felder and Bernie Leadon both attended Gainesville High School. Felder learned how to play slide guitar from Duane Allman. One of Felder's students was a young Tom Petty.
After Leanon left in 1975, Joe Walsh joined the band. Felder and Walsh became one of rock music's most memorable onstage partnerships. Felder doubled on banjo, mandolin and pedal steel guitar on future tours.Quite the musician!
Glenn Frey played the original solos on this song. He's credited on the album.

Hey Mark. I've always wanted to learn the "I can't hurt a fly" solo off of that song by "Tomothy P. Schmoo". Great lesson as always. I also just learned that "Wildflower solo you re-posted. Didn't even know you had that in your catalog. Such a great tune. I remember Sklylark being David Foster's band if I'm not mistaken. Thanks again! Aloha from Hawaii. -D.

Thank you! Yes, I absolutely *love* the song Wildflower by Skylark. I'm going to do a follow up lesson on the chord changes soon, which is why I reposted the video. It's a real hidden gem from that time period. Such a beautiful melody and lyrics ... and the harmony works so well with it. Cheers!

I cannot solve the riddle because, well, "I can't tell you why." haha. Awesome melody. Thanks for teaching how to play it. I wish I could come up with songs like this. Fairly simple yet incredibly melodic and memorable!! I love The Eagles! Learning the solo would be awesome. Also love Lynyrd Skynyrd and I'm working on Freebird solo right now. I know you like LS too.

  • @MarkZabel

I like them both ... LS more. But if you really want to learn melody, old-time fiddle music is where it's at. No kidding! Not guitar always. In fact, usually not. But the melody is everything in those songs. Try Jay Ungar's "Lover's Waltz". It's definitely not rock and roll, but Jay can turn a melody like nobody else. Staying in rock, Boston is very melodic as is anything Larry Carlton did. Larry especially has an immense number of ideas, bit still plays the blues primarily. Anyway, I really dig bluegrass and old-time American/French Canadian music, so don't feel compelled to do that ... just thought I'd mention it!

Hi JJ. Thanks for your question. I think the note for note portion of the lesson at around 4:30 is as detailed as I'm going to go for my KZread lessons - also, you can get the TAB here (tinyurl.com/ybpzjuwm). That tells you *exactly* which fret and string I play the note. So you've got the initial demo, two slow-motion demos, note-for-note, and TAB. Is there something else you're looking for? If you could clarify, that would help.

Oh James! I've done that song a number of times and it always gets blocked in the US. I could do a different song/solo that's similar to it, but not the song itself. Call it Motel Nevada. I've found most viewers really want to learn the actual song, not an "in the style of" lesson. Let me know if you'd like an "in the style of" type lesson.

This is the solo i ask shredders to play to see if they really arent just fluff with extra cheese. Nothing wrong with shredding but you have to be able to do this too. Neal Schon to me can do this and then he can blister. Schon is the most complete guitarist in my opinion. That being said ive learned this is harder to do just right than many fast licks. Either you have it or you dont with the abillity to bend to right note evey time and not even need to shake it its just right there.

Okay. It's buried in Wikipedia sort of ... check out this convoluted sentence. "In 1980, the band promoted the rock ballad with a music video which featured Schmit on bass guitar accompanied by Frey on the electric piano, although Frey recorded the guitar solos as it is printed on the LP inside sleeve, with Henley on the drums, Don Felder on the electric guitar, Walsh on the organ and Walsh's touring sideman Joe Vitale on ARP string synthesizer. Joe Walsh played all the keyboards on the studio recording." Yet on personnel, Frey is not credited with any guitar - but Felder is credited with "lead guitar". Maybe it's lawsuit-related. WTF? Anyway, it's sounds like a slow Felder solo even if it's Frey ... might leave it that way for now. Can't check every source. Damn. Enough of anything related to the Eagles. They're such a pain in the ass! :)

@@Teleman73 Fixed it the best I could, but not on Wikipedia. You should correct it there and do us all a huge favor! Do you know if the solo on the single is also Frey. It's slightly shorter than the LP version, but it could simply be removing some of the repeats on the ending and keeping the original song.

Frey composed and played the solo on the original recording. Felder had nothing to do with the solo. In live Felder played the solo, note for note, because Frey had to play the Rhodes.

I have mixed feelings about intellectual property... Libraries are full of various author's books that people read for free. KZread let's one listen to any song in the world for free. The list goes on... Chuck Berry's estate would be over a billion dollars if it collected $1.00 for every use of "The Chuck Berry Lick." It's interesting lately that certain individuals and groups don't want other individuals to "use/play" their music at public functions. Most of us learn guitar by copying the music of guitarists that we like. I don't know...

  • @MarkZabel

It should be totally okay, because what I play isn't what was played. In any event, I never mind sharing or giving revenue if it's real intellectual property. I just don't like videos to be blocked after all the work I put in. The "Chuck Berry Lick" is not intellectual property of Chuck's estate - not that I know of. Chuck himself took it from another player, changed it, and it got changed by others. It's possible *calling it* "the Chuck Berry Lick* is problematic, but playing it isn't. Playing his Johnny B. Goode version is use of someone's property (maybe not his). One last thing. Try finding "Wind Cries Mary" on KZread. You'll find various versions, but not the album version. Why? Because Jimi Hendrix's estate finds and blocks them. Same for much of the eagles catalog. It's of course their right. IMHO it's silly of them to do it because it prevents their music from being heard by new generations of people for peanuts. (Not my channel, but by big channels) Again, it's totally their right of course. Did you see that "In The Air Tonight" was actually the #2 song downloaded from iTunes a couple weeks ago? That's because of exposure on KZread. My guess is that iTunes also only gives the artists a tiny slice of the revenue, but it has to be more than the slice the artist gets from KZread. And even that is more than the $0 they get from blocking it. In any event, it's their choice. Most of the videos on my channel could be blocked tomorrow. Who knows?

I don't know if they're all like that, but Henley's seems to be. Who knows though really? Maybe if I had all those millions I'd still want to count nickels. I don't think I would, but I don't really know. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I think they'd actually make more money if they allowed it. After all, if I really wanted to learn the song, I'd want to listen to the real thing. Not just a demo from some schmo like me!

Frankly, I lost interest in their music after I got to know these privacy issues. Dylan says in an interview that it ain't worth anything if it ain't free. And he walks the talk by releasing his latest work himself on KZread couple of weeks ago with his usual razor sharp lyrics, especially in George Floyd context. At one level, Henley is well within his rights but yes, he can't really be a role model of a leader or icon. He's lost a significant fan base in the past few years just because of these privacy issues. These guys don't understand the power of social media today. Most of the publicity of Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie was through the social media. Dylan, McCartney, and Deep Purple have, directly or surrogately, premiered their latest or remastered albums on KZread. Felder's autobio gives some peek into their control over everything. Felder was one of the 5 founding members in the registered inc. Bernie and Randy quit on their own. The 'Gods', as Felder refers to them, tried but just couldn't bully him.
