Don Cherry Interview 1987 Soviet Union Canada Hockey Fight

Спорт

Blame the Russians! That's Don Cherry's reaction to the bench-clearing brawl between the Canadian and Soviet world junior hockey teams in Piestany, Czechoslovakia in 1987. Canada was going for gold, leading 4-2. Then a fight broke out, both benches emptied, and a 20-minute fracas erupted. Former NHL coach Don Cherry, always lenient on hockey violence, applauds the Canadian players. In this clip, he tells sportswriter Michael Farber that sacrificing a medal to fight the Soviets was simply "our Canadian way."

This interview launched Don Cherry's career. Cherry was speaking on behalf of all Canadians, as we felt it was unfair that Canada got the shaft, after the Russians initially jumped the bench. All the media and commentators were throwing the young players under the bus, and Cherry was the first one to openly defend what had happened.

You don't have to love everything he says, but frankly, Canadian's who want the game of Hockey to be a proud Canadian tradition, need to realize what Cherry has done for Canadians in all these years. Cherry defends Canadians in an abrasive manner, and everyone gets made at Cherry forgetting that he was actually defending Canadians and Canadian hockey, lest we forget!

no matter what the consequences you back your team up, I finished my minor career doing it, our player got his helmet knock out and was down on the ice getting punched in the face and the lines men were to busy worrying about 2 others players talking so i dropped the gloves and went in, its the thing to do no matter what a team backs a team up, you win as a team, lose as a team and in this case get disqualified as a team but the loyalty factor, gold medal or not is something to be proud of

Farber, don't even try to match Cherry's wit with hockey. Cherry is right, they did what they HAD to do, they weren't left with much of a choice. Farber answers his questions like a politician, Cherry answered them like a man, straightforward. How convincing was Cherry? Well, watch the video again, even Farber at the end of it starts leaning his way just to avoid looking foolish. The woman picks up on it which is why she kind of chuckles at the end.

How obivious this was set up by the russians?? All farber is missing is a damn bow tie? The fight is unavoidable and how can he advise the Cdn coach to have his 16 players watch 20 russians beat up 6 Canadians. If he did then sombody should have beated the crap out of him! Canada RULED only the russians to compete with at that time and that why we got booted out of the tourney! Pretty sure farber's biggest fight was to get the courage to ask a girl to dance and bet he folded on that too:)

anyone who says let your teammates get not just beat up but literally jumped by 2 or 3 guys so you can get a power play obviously doesnt know hockey or has ever played it. 1 on1 fight is different or a 5 on5. if its 10 on 6 and russians are going over the bench 2 fight then the canadiens are more then right to fight back. screw the game at that point its about sticking up for your teammates. but seriously americans, canadiens and russians are the only countries that fight because they have balls

What I think was that if you do see someone out number your guys and have one laying out down cold like Don cherry said you have to stick up for your team, for the player, for your friends and your son. Now if that was my son i would of jumped over the boards and deck the guy and make sure he pays the price. But there are situations in games where you can be smart

“Can’t guess what motivated the Russians”-back then, the tournament went as follows: you played each team once, team that finishes in 1st place wins gold. They were down to the final game with these circumstances: if Canada won by 5 or more goals, they win gold, any other outcome: Russians win gold. It was early in the 2nd, Canada was up 2 goals, looking like they were going to go on to blow them out and win by 5+, Russians knew if they could somehow stop the game, they would win gold, so they started that fight!
