Don Cherry Interview 1987 Soviet Union Canada Hockey Fight
Спорт
Blame the Russians! That's Don Cherry's reaction to the bench-clearing brawl between the Canadian and Soviet world junior hockey teams in Piestany, Czechoslovakia in 1987. Canada was going for gold, leading 4-2. Then a fight broke out, both benches emptied, and a 20-minute fracas erupted. Former NHL coach Don Cherry, always lenient on hockey violence, applauds the Canadian players. In this clip, he tells sportswriter Michael Farber that sacrificing a medal to fight the Soviets was simply "our Canadian way."

Michael Farber, a guy who never played hockey is asked to do a national live interview. Yup that's CBC.

That’s exactly what I just said. Leave it to the communist broadcasting Corporation to bring in a flagrant communist idiot. This guy has to be the most useless tool I’ve seen in a while.

This interview launched Don Cherry's career. Cherry was speaking on behalf of all Canadians, as we felt it was unfair that Canada got the shaft, after the Russians initially jumped the bench. All the media and commentators were throwing the young players under the bus, and Cherry was the first one to openly defend what had happened.

wpgjets4life Cherry's career with CBC began in 1980, but his popularity and reputation in Canada enhanced and increased in an absolutely HUGE way after this interview with Farber and his interview with Brian Williams.

Sometimes defending yourself and your comrades is more important than international hockey rules.
I'm from the United States and I think Don Cherry is awesome. It's hockey nothing more and Cherry is pure hockey. I love it!
Fucking rights Don Cherry
I hope Don Cherry mails cheques to Farber. This is the clip that made everyone agree with and like Don Cherry.... Made him millions.
I love Don Cherry! So brutally honest and correct!
Farber is the kind of guy that calls his wife's boyfriend "sir".

cherry is right 100% if I'm the Canadian coach is send the boys up and over as well!
Don Cherry is one of the nicest, greatest men I've ever met.
Don Cherry: A true patriot!
OMG! Farber is talking about how smart Kordic was? Priceless! Nuff said.
Don Cherry is a legend
Canadian's who love hockey, but haven't warmed up to Don Cherry yet, I believe are sorley misdirected. You don't have to love everything he says, but frankly, Canadian's who want the game of Hockey to be a proud Canadian tradition, need to realize what Cherry has done for Canadians in all these years. Cherry defends Canadians in an abrasive manner, and everyone gets made at Cherry forgetting that he was actually defending Canadians and Canadian hockey, lest we forget!
"those foreigners over there!" hahahahah
Michael Farber really has a set of balls to present his argument. He didn’t answer Grapes’ question about his son being one of the Canadian boys when the Russians went over the boards.
Man this old video of and even older video i love it
It was always tough for Canadian teams to win tournaments in Europe back in the day. The odds were always stacked against us. Referees, schedule, stick work and a lot of BS. They were lucky to win gold. But looking back, might as well go out in a blaze of glory.
Farber looks like the father from Family Ties. Stick to dealing with Mallory and Alex, dude...
"It's an unfortunate incident. You don't like to see 20 kids punching 20 other kids, its not a disgrace.. it's hockey"
no matter what the consequences you back your team up, I finished my minor career doing it, our player got his helmet knock out and was down on the ice getting punched in the face and the lines men were to busy worrying about 2 others players talking so i dropped the gloves and went in, its the thing to do no matter what a team backs a team up, you win as a team, lose as a team and in this case get disqualified as a team but the loyalty factor, gold medal or not is something to be proud of
He still writes for Sports Illustrated. He's a great writer but Don was right, they had to stick up for their teammates
Farber wouldn't know which end of the hockey stick goes on the ice.
fighting is a part of hockey. hockey's a physical sport. if you dont like it go do ballet..or play soccer
Cherry is right as always. This Farber guy though, he's clearly never played a day in his life.
I’m on Don Cherry’s side like probably every Canadian
Farber, don't even try to match Cherry's wit with hockey. Cherry is right, they did what they HAD to do, they weren't left with much of a choice. Farber answers his questions like a politician, Cherry answered them like a man, straightforward. How convincing was Cherry? Well, watch the video again, even Farber at the end of it starts leaning his way just to avoid looking foolish. The woman picks up on it which is why she kind of chuckles at the end.
that's not just don's philosophy. that's all successful Canadian players philosophy. we're raised that way by every coach along the way.
Fucking right! Don Cherry speaks like he's got a pair
im from usa but i love hockey no matter who plays and at 4:28 to 5:36 don cherry speaks the truth
Oh, I truly miss Coach’s Corner.
lol why does Barb think shes above this topic, pffft she did nothing as far as relevant broadcasting
I'm an American and I totally 100% agree with Don Cherry.
BEST INTERVIEW EVER!!!
thanks Don! Telling right
Canada is gonna play hockey regardless if there are medals. Don was right! In his opinion
I searched for the brawl on wiki, but couldn't find anything.
i surely agree with Cherry. the players did the right thing and stuck up for each other.screw the medal and screw Farber too
love cherry used to watch his tapes in hockey camp
Farber ended up flip flopping at the end, hence the facial reaction by the female journalist. Cherry was right, you don't leave your teammates out there at risk. It only takes one player to go over the boards to set off a chain reaction.
i love her laugh at the end to what the guy says...lmao
Don Cherry: "Thank you Barbara" -camera cuts- Don Cherry: "Shithead"
RIGHT ON Don Cherry
Does anyone know if Farber ever played hockey, Ice hockey I mean. Not ringette, or field hockey or table hockey. Real hockey.
How obivious this was set up by the russians?? All farber is missing is a damn bow tie? The fight is unavoidable and how can he advise the Cdn coach to have his 16 players watch 20 russians beat up 6 Canadians. If he did then sombody should have beated the crap out of him! Canada RULED only the russians to compete with at that time and that why we got booted out of the tourney! Pretty sure farber's biggest fight was to get the courage to ask a girl to dance and bet he folded on that too:)
The truth of the matter is ( coming from interviews from players like Brendan Shanahan, and a few others), the entire Soviet team was off the bench before any of our guys went over the boards.
Farber seems to be one of those people with no honour. I play hockey and i swear to god if i was sitting on the bench and one person on the opposing team jumped the boards i would be there in a heartbeat. Its people like this guy who is wanting to take the toughness out of hockey.
anyone who says let your teammates get not just beat up but literally jumped by 2 or 3 guys so you can get a power play obviously doesnt know hockey or has ever played it. 1 on1 fight is different or a 5 on5. if its 10 on 6 and russians are going over the bench 2 fight then the canadiens are more then right to fight back. screw the game at that point its about sticking up for your teammates. but seriously americans, canadiens and russians are the only countries that fight because they have balls
The fact that I have no idea who the guy in the right is and everyone knows don cherry kinda shows who won that debate
Oh Farber.................you are WAY out of your element against Grapes!
Farber is one of the politically correct and he wouldn't answers Cherry's question. He would be considered a coward and be blackballed by his teammates.
I disagree with Cherry 99.9% of the time..this is not one of them. Proud of these young men..real Canadians!!!
god i love cherry
Farber looks like the dad on "Family Ties"! Also - check out his comment at about 1:20, when he says "According to stories that I've seen, 4 Russians..." So, he didn't even see the game, and now he's saying what the team should or should not have done?
"under no circumstances should you fight" is an absurd thing to say. You've got to stick up for yourself, and that means sometimes fighting.
@Yareakh Your powerplay. But in this situation it was the time to play fight, to stick up for a team mate is more important then winning the gold.
Of course, the CBC would criticize Canadian hockey players and coaches. Aren't they the same ones that wanted a Senate hearing on Shayne Doan to have him removed as the Captain of Team Canada?
God I love Don Cherry, even though he is a knob, he usually is right. Don Cherry for PM. Be alot different country, for the better!
I bet that Journalist has never been in a fight ever.
@Midnightrambler3760 Here, Here! Even a 6 to 5 disadvantage is unacceptable.
@Yareakh No, I do agree with farber to a point, and I also agree with Don Cherry you can stand on the middle point of the fence. What I think was that if you do see someone out number your guys and have one laying out down cold like Don cherry said you have to stick up for your team, for the player, for your friends and your son. Now if that was my son i would of jumped over the boards and deck the guy and make sure he pays the price. But there are situations in games where you can be smart
wow...don looks soo different..this vid is soo old
“Can’t guess what motivated the Russians”-back then, the tournament went as follows: you played each team once, team that finishes in 1st place wins gold. They were down to the final game with these circumstances: if Canada won by 5 or more goals, they win gold, any other outcome: Russians win gold. It was early in the 2nd, Canada was up 2 goals, looking like they were going to go on to blow them out and win by 5+, Russians knew if they could somehow stop the game, they would win gold, so they started that fight!
Good old Barbara Frum...the best in the business. She finally stopped rolling recently, as her son is now a little closer to the side of good over evil.....
you mean he's not?!?
@berezin99 Hey I'm American... we don't want him over here either! if he loves the Reds so much, send him over there!
Love Don Cherry.
Five World Junior Championships in a row... Just to name a few.
Great to see "Hamilton" above Cherry.
What was Farber's point? I was distracted by the fact that he'd out-dressed Don Cherry.
Hell would anyone remember 1987 WJHC if there wasn't a brawl? Enough said.
i agree don cherry is god, you fight when you have to.
Well dons right here....
farber keeps refering to "stories hes heard, seen" so it almost sounds like he hasnt even seen the fight
Farber seems to studdard alot when Cherry says stuff to him
RIP Barbara Frum!
I wonder if Farber someone jumped Farber on the street and just starting punching him if he would say "It's against the rules, I can't throw a punch back." I think you would push back.
Don we miss you
You have to protect your teammates, period.
i agree with Cherry. the players did the right thing and stuck up for each other. screw the medal
Probably never played the game. Read the rule book all you want but you better know how to play the game.
Don Cherry is right
Michael Farber later died in a hockey fight...
“It’s not a disgrace, it’s hockey!”? And yet they should have just skated to the bench and not throw down. Pick a side.
Nice sweater vest Farber
Farber looks like Russian comic Yakov Smirnoff. Don Cherry is totally correct here.
@l3iiSON Wow, that literally had nothing to do with hockey.
"It wasn't right, but it's the thing to do". That doesn't even make sense.
I'm glad this other guy isn't a friend of mine. He'd let ya get jumped and not even help.
@vidlivs You know what Anglophones means right? English-speaking people. Hence, Americans are anglophones as well as the British and most Canadians.
@pem82sox Yeah, we just had the Olympics here a few months ago. The whole world was here and the whole world was watching. Yeah, nothing big ever happens here.
gotta love the media
