You can, in fact, load a pre-made pretender in game. You have to press ctrl+L in pretender creation menu. I heard they wanted to improve UI in Dom6, i can't fathom why would they hide that option.

I actually like the Caveman with the net. They expand decently well since they can tie up the enemy en masse, and you can mass produce them even in Sloth + Turmoil scales. I think you quickly want to transition into mass freespawn Mouflon with the Tartalo, since you can make them in many provinces and each Tartalo summons 2 Mouflon per turn. It could quickly get out of control since the Mouflon have zero upkeep, kind of like Sceleria. It's true that the Shaman is pretty stinky, so you might struggle with research, but I think that when buffed with Nature/Earth/Air buffs from your combat mages (including the forest only ones), this nation could become seriously terrifying. IMO, you have to think of them fundamentally as a "buff my chaff" nation. True, it's not the kind of nation that has good anyfort mages, but when it comes to an actual war, you only need so many Big Combat Casters, and your cap mages/forest foreignrec mages fill that role nicely. Don't forget that Cavemen have above human HP and Strength as well as Fire+Cold res, and with Mouflons having upwards of 20 HP, your armies aren't very vulnerable to late game AOEs and remotes. Heck, if you can find a way to get big Fire yourself, your dudes would tank Fire Storm pretty well...at the very least, you can Barkskin them without actually gaining Fire Vulnerability, which is something.

That’s a good point, I barely considered the summons at all and mostly thought about the big cap only mages. It does make it harder to mass cheaper mages since forts are so expensive in Dom6, usually not until way later can I start to afford several of them. Probably I underestimated this nation, but it’s still very unorthodox.

Yeah, they're definitely a very weird nation. I don't know how good they will end up being, but we'll probably need a fair bit of experimentation before we have a solid grasp of how the nation should be played.

Pyrene gets out of Fort commanders with summon allies for mufflon and cave cows. This means exponential production of mufflon and cave cow armies. A player would counter you with things that check MR, but the ai you can swamp with pyrene. Unrelated imo the best caveman is the cheap one with the greatclub, because at least he deals 22 damage. They die like flies but kill like angry cavemen with clubs.

I think with the economy changes in Dominions 6 you need to be careful about going wild buying expensive mages early, I've watched several games in a row now where the player has struggled to put together enough gold to get forts started while buying 400+g mages every turn, that they then have trouble using because they don't have high level spells and items researched. With the increase in mage and infrastructure prices along with the increase in indy strength requiring more spending on troops as well, I don't think you get enough gold to easily pull that off anymore without crunching your income with upkeep. Maybe you could afford it with an awake expander giving you an extra province every turn but that's more dangerous now too.

@@CairnEnjoyer I hope that's the case and there's more strategy now with what mages you should buy and when, but it might be that some civs can still do fine spamming their most expensive mages and the ones I've been watching just have economy problems. It seems like the game has slowed down a bit overall though and is punishing players for trying to build up a super strong mage corps too fast. We'll have to see how it plays out as the community adjusts to D6, that's just what I've been noticing from the first few test games people have been posting.

  • @dogebestest7187

I want to oike this nation but in practice they are kind of annoying to play. My idea was to take a Drakon to expand with anf then focus on the forein recruit e2 mages as thugs since the cap only giants with hammers can make 5 gem items for 1 gem, so idea was 2 ~250 gold thugs with 5 gems worth of gear each operating in kill teams with a third Rain of Stones guy added as fire support once ylu get evo 7. But i was rather disappointed with the thugs, as they are not priests so are hard to bless. You can forge them bottles for cheap, but idea is to have them as budget as possible so that bottle is like 20% of allocated gem budget. So then i figured ill just give them recup on the bless as that doesnt require being actually blessed but then their effectiveness even in pairs is limited. You could stack them on the same square to layer regeneration temper flesh and moss body with one and iron skin, temper flesh and temper armours with the other. That will destroy small comitments of troops and may be good vs players but ai seems to commit enough on large enough scale it would frequently fail and you cant layer more buffs as they will fatigue out and get chopped up. Another idea i had was to buff the ever loving fuck out of the cudgel and rocks cavemen. They are undisciplined but due to having the sticks and stones attack they waddle forward and then stop to yeet shit and can be then buffed but logistically its annoying to have it planned in advance to lead them out of the caves to meet with the forest mages whos recruitment spots are also very vulnerable as you must keep them unforted its just frustrating

I've seen you make quite a lot of newb mistakes in this playthrough, and FYI, that is perfectly fine. You have a lot to learn about Dominions, and that is a good place to be in actually, because a lot of the fun of this game is in learning and experimenting and trying different things out. What I do take issue with is that in the start of the video when you review the national units you make a lot of judgements about the nation that are flat out wrong. You don't know Dominions and how it works (that's clear) and then you go on to say "I don't like this or that unit". Well, you don't understand how these units synergize with the nation, or even how the nation should be played effectively, so your not really in a good place to judge it on camera. In fact, all of Pyrenes units have a use case. Like all nations, not all the national units will be used in mainstream builds, and some are thrown in to flesh out the national lore, however, as you demonstrated, they all can be used to great effect when used effectively. Your use of Sorghina's is another area where you showed you don't understand Dominions and how the units are used to wreak absolute carnage on a battlefield. You used like 5 of them to thug a throne province without a supporting army, without first pinging the province to even see what was in it, and furthermore, the province was not even bordering one of your own. So, you threw like 2000 gold down the drain for nothing, and how you used them was completely wrong for what they do. Next, why did you choose a basic scout as your prophet? There are cases where prophetizing a scout makes sense, but this isn't one of them. In another instance, you once again go after a level 2 throne this time without pinging it, and you throw hordes of chaff troops in I guess thinking a bunch of indy bokemonos will be able to take on not just some of the better stuff that guards a throne but also the mages too! Granted, it doesn't take a massive army to take these thrones, but it does take planning and a strategy. Using your national troops, priests, and mages to synergize together to create a battlefield that favors you. Understanding the magic system is also critical when using your mages, and understanding when and how many mages you need to bring to a fight are also equally key. You need to come up with a magic strategy to win the game with Pyrene even before selecting a pretender chassis, so that you know how to set your pretender up in the first place to fill the holes that your nation has. My advice is that you should watch KZreadrs like Lucid Tactics, and Das to learn the basics of the game, and there are A LOT! Dominions is an extremely complicated game, and it has a really steep learning curve. Maybe the biggest learning curve of any game. You did as well as you could given your experience level. Keep trying and learning! PS. Nobody, and I do mean NOBODY knows all there is to know about Dominions except for the two devs that made this game. Everyone else is still learning!

That’s true, especially in Dom6 I’m always trying to improve. I’m going to join a few multiplayer games soon to help get some real practice. To be honest playing SP is not that useful for improving your skills beyond the very early expansion. I definitely judged the nation harshly, after playing it here and seeing some of the comments I think I could manage it much better next time. Even at the end I got a bit lazy and just started teleporting my god onto the thrones to nab them. I’m looking forward to improving and keep making Dominions and other content.

@@CairnEnjoyer I advise you to keep doing SP with the nation that you intend to try out in MP first until you have a good build and national strategy. MP games can be brutal, and hard to learn from when you just get stomped by more experienced players that really don't have much interest in teaching you. Watch Lucid and Das and other KZreadrs that have a lot of playlisted games out there. They tend to be fairly long winded in explaining things, which is nice because its easier to watch them make mistakes and then lament about them so that you get to learn from it to!!
