    Small thing to note about the Hydra tamer: They can swim together with the Hydras. So If you want to surprise them with a river crossing, they can do that but Warior Sorcs can't.

    One other minor aspect of Sauromatia is that you have really excellent heroes. Two powerful mages with air-death crosspath for wailing winds / wind of death shenanigans, or magic phase fog warriors or high death stuff (A2S2D4N4 who is also stealthy and a healer and an A3W2D4 spell singer, who does have homesickness 20 but has high mapmove and access to cloud trapeze), and another mage who is basically a witch king who rolled a good random and a good 10% random: D4N1B3 on the same chassis. It does incentivize leaning into luck just a bit more, although it may usually be a scale that gets dropped to afford a better bless. Luck also has a small impact on improving the quality of your crossbreeding, which you'll likely be doing a decent amount of as a mid to late game chaff source with your easy B/N access.

    I'm going to explain to anyone interested, why Oiropatas are the most Overrated Sacred unit in the game. Blocking the shine of one of the Greatest Sacred Ingame. I think it is a huge mistake to overlook the Androphag, and it can be easy if you just look at their Stat Card. Compared to Oiropatas, Androphags have (1) more STR, (1) less DEF, (2) more HP (from (11) to (13), which is almost 20% more), (1) less MR, and slightly less PROT. Only differece is their hats, Oiro wear a (18) PROT Half Helm, Androphags wear (9) PROT Reinforced Leather. Combat speed is a bit slower (16)v(18), map move is (14) instead of (16), and they have only the Snake Tattoo whereas Oiropatas have Snake and Horse Tattoo. Now this in itself might not make them worth 55G instead of 45G (almost 20%). The (2) resources more for Oiropatas is negligible, and they have same Recruitment Point Cost (46). The key to what makes them great is their Mount. The Androphags Lizard Mount is one of the most useful ingame. Firstly, its bite does a bonus (20) Poison + Fatigue Damage compared to Oiropata. Its only (10) vs Size (4), and (6) vs Size (6), it can still stack up over a battle on any enemy though, and should not be underestimated. And the most useful part of this Mount will ensure they wont go down without a few turns of Bite Rolls. The most useful trait of this Mount is one you cant see from the stat cards, infact the only way to get your full gold out of this unit is if they manage to die. This is because after the sponge on top of the Lizard dies, the Lizard will keep on fighting. It will stay blessed, and has a whopping (28) hp. The only downside is they have a small chance to attack your own units. I have never seen a Lizard attack another Lizard Rider yet though. This means you have essentially 2x the raiding party early game. If one of your sacred DPS cav dies, you get a HP sponge Monster that is still Sacred that spawns on the tile they died in. The only downside is, after the battle their Lizard will wander off, so you can't keep them. Another few useful traits is that at (28)HP, they are close enough to (31)HP regen threshold to be boosted. With a Regen+ (4) HP from blood bless they become pretty good frontline "chaff", especially since HP bless woks on both forms. Normally you would need some other blesses, but the Bless Tattoo (10)Magic DEF works pretty well. Especially because you can give them Barkskin pretty easily to get all 3 defense layer rolls. This will give them (12) standard, (10) Natural, and (10) Magic Defense, paired with (17) base DEF and (12) ATT (ATT is your Parry Chance). This is without a Bless, but you need to Awaken Tattoo, and then protection spell, so you don't get them at their "full" potential instantly. You can get enough research year 1 to get Enchant 3 and some Alteration, so a Dormant God Bless will come in at around the time you reach their full potential. You can block most mundane attacks (Note Province DEF) without a thought, and have lots of chances to Regen. The first forms 17 HP (13+4 Bless) and second forms 32(28+4) mean this unit technically has 49HP (41+8) with this bless. This means they can survive for a few rounds of combat against almost anything, and wade into Chaff. Remember, this isn't even a great Bless. My point is, this unit is so underrated its insane. You can literally base your entire strategy around this unit and do well. Oiropatas wish they were as good as Androphags. -Androphag Gang

    Side Note: Occasionally some of the Lizards will stay under your command. I don't know if there is a roll against the commanders morale or something (potentially Luck scales might help?), but you will only ever get a few. They are not blessed (although they stay blessed the entire battle they lose their rider in), and undisciplined, so they are of limited use without a bless. Having a few in a Castle with some Skele Spam mages can add some chunk to your defence in a pinch. Also, their Bite Attack has strength added to it once they lose their rider. Its not a huge deal, but going from (15) damage to (20) (Blood Surge[+3STR] and +2 str earth bless) can be useful.

    Thank you for speaking up for our gang! I'd love to add that androphags can swim (and have swamp survival), as can literally the cheapest leader in the sauromatian roster (hydra tamer), making them situationally more mobile than oiorpatas.

    This nation is worth checking out in Hellenika, for the info of those reading. They get spells that the Witch Kings can cast that bless anything in an AoE but cause 25 poison damage (e.g. Hydras). So you look through mod inspector for PR15+ units and you find things like Swamp Drakes, which if you get blood vengeance in your bless and +10 PR, work real good. Also those D1 can cast a spell for 0 gems that converts a province from Growth3 to Death3 and generates money in the process, and they get free nature gems in Death provinces, so you can farm your crappy swamp and waste provinces for gold and nature gems.

    Armour of twisting thorns: 2N3B so it would be hard to do without, say, making a god who at least has strong blood/nature. Something I've done is take the Black Bull so that he can jump expansion and later create the first version of the armour. I'd say one of the main goals of witch kings is basically to prep for Vampires and add a little blood to communions

    Blood is the cheapest path to empower because you get get slaves more easily than other gems, so it's not actually too difficult. If you get a blood random, you empower once for 45 slaves, and then hand them a thistle mace and you're golden. You'll want a blood 3 anyway to climb blood (they can make blood thornes, and with one and a set of the armor, they get to B5 and can forge the other boosters as well) and potentially open you up to getting vampire lords later anyway.

    one more thing that I found funny with Sauromatian WS is that they have war casters so if you go shroud late communion slaves with reinvig + regen/recuperation WS can thug with advance and cast spells

    Witch Kings seems more of a lategame thing where you want them for rituals - and when your commuions can get disrupted. Witch Kings are 15 HP 16 morale sacred mounted casters with armor, so it should be easier to keep them alive and you only need to gear the one unit rather than the three Enaries you could be replacing them with. The versatility of sacred status can also matter, you *could* for example get a larger bless and replace their armor to get them 22 map move and 20 HP. And if you ever find yourself on a bad map, swimming could be just the thing you need.

    This nation has to be one of the strongest and well balanced in the game. They've got everything and they dont have to depend on randoms for mages. Communions, invun tattoos, skele spam, national spells, fortune teller, poison archers, 100 cav options, raiding, high map move, native spirit sight, disposable fluffers, inspirational leaders etc etc. Its annoying for this nation to have everything when some nations have like 1-2 that arnt hot garbage or no spells or mages that depend on 10% random to be ok or leaders that are +0 with 60 max. That poison bite on the lizard cav is useless since it doesnt work on large units. Why would you ever need to fatigue stun a human size?

    The one thing they don't really have is divine magic. Holy 1 is going to be as high as you'll ever get outside of your one prophet until conjuration 7. This means a.) you don't have a quick and easy countermeasure for undead spam and b.) blessing large packs of sacreds is going to be a pain. Not a crippling weakness, but definitely an annoyance.

    @@GaldirEonai You can slot a blood random sorceress into a communion and use her to cast divine blessing. I think their greatest weakness is the total lack of earth magic, no earth buffs, no crystal gear and no earth thug gear is all pretty bad.

    With the witch king you can also try taking some luck scales and transformation. There's a chance they will get a bonus to a magic path. The chance of death its fairly low but there is a chance of getting foul spawn and potential feeblemind affliction. So you could take a recuperation bless to help mitigate that problem. Which would give a minor benefit to your main sacreds which are cap only. But it might be fun to play with. The hydras, you can Gift of reason and give them like a stone bird and some flying boots and just send them off to go kill stuff. Also seems fun. With the androphag it seems like it has a second model once the main one dies (serpent), but after the battle you don't keep the mount if the main unit is killed. With the serpent it has 28hp and generally slightly worse stats and it has "stupid" keyword. However with this double model type you can combo it with certain spells like Haunted forest on your dominion. (ench 8 5N 1D) 60 nature gem ritual. Anyone (yes even enemies) slain will return as manikin those manikin will fight for you in battle. Only applies to battles in your dominion btw. life after death (ench 7 and 4 death. Witch king can cast it. combat spell). Which allows slain friendly models a chance to fight again as undead. With the double model here you get 2 undead. value! + swarm or howl which would give you more manikin and then soulless. I think. So what I'm hoping happens is your main unit dies you get a manikin, then your serpent model dies you get a manikin, then either of them die you get a soulless undead. I'm not quite sure how the mechanics of it works but I think at the very least it's a strong anti-SC option and a way to get some extra defence if the enemy is pressing you hard. The manikins are gone after battle I think? But anyway even with just the haunted forest if you can push your dominion forward you can get free soldiers from killing the enemy and when losing your own warriors. Might also be kinda cool seeing undead soulless hydras? I suppose the smaller hydras would be effective chaff to combo with that spell. And then after the battle you can cast carrion reanimation on the battlesite to get a refund on all the units who just died. And i'm sure there's a bunch of other spells you can wombo combo on top of that but that is the main part of this strat. It is unfortunately very high in enchantment at research 8. But it could help tip the scales in a big late game showdown.

    Sauromatia is most definitely one of the most interesting nations in the game. One thing I find quite strange is how they are similar to EA Ctis. They feel very similar while playing.

    Androphag leaves their lizard behind when they die, but only for that battle. The lizard is sacred but stupid and has no armor so it's not all that great. That's why they cost 10 gold more.

    It will still have the poison bite attack right? I guess it's just for that poison and the swimming means it can team up with your hydras to do river crossing attacks. Probably not worth the cost but it's got a niche use.

    Oh yes, I like me some Sauromatia, great troops and sick thugs is my jam. Nature, death and astral combo is awesome, add blood to it, that's the shit. Great power curve with skele spam and foul vapours, into late game Vamp and Tart options. Shred armies with poison and cav, dick thugs with soul slay.

    Looking for guidance for Dom 6. Specifically, how do you think the Hydra Tamers getting tight leash affects the relationship with Hydras? Being able to script them should make them more manageable.

    Sauromatia is based on Scythians and Sauromatians. Also Amazons, but those were inspired by the previous two.

    I think it is "Sarmatians" in history, but yeqh they and the Scythians are the inspiration for Greek "Amazons" 100%

    ​@@McHobotheBobo Sarmatians is the more common term, but Sauromatians is also correct. They often refer to different archeological time periods, with the Sauromatians being older and Sarmatians being younger. Wikipedia gives a good general overview en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarmatians

    I think you mean Gift of Reason. Divine Name only works on mindless. And I would generally say no, they only have misc slots from what I recall, so you're only gaining the opportunity to buff them. If you had easy access to Iron Warriors, maybe. But you have high death, so better to make rings of regen for bane generals or wraith lords.

    Wouldn’t the Witch Kings be decent thug options, I mean they could cast a few self buffs, personal regen and soul vortex, and then go in if you have them a decent weapon.

    While that is possible to do, thugging is the job of *cheap* units and the Witch King is anything but that. Rare and expensive, they are too fragile to be SCs and have no stealth to evade counters so doing it against a compentent opponent is asking to lose it. Instead, use 400 gold worth of cav to take provinces and keep the Witch King for things only they can do - rituals, forging and battle magic without a communion.

    Why not forgett about Warrior Priestesses and just recruit indie priests? I mean sure they are a lot more durable, but 130g doesn´t justify that I think. You could thug I guess, but thats kind of missing the point just use Warrior Sorceresses if you have equip or even recruit more Oiropatas if you don´t. The only reason I could see is to not slow down your armies if you are going for full cav - just seems so niche and overpriced.

    Lots of reasons. 1. i want a lot of warrior sorcs. 2. i can do smaller expansion parties on guard commander. And sabbath -> divine blessing isnt lul its :muscle:
