Dominions 5 Basic Nation Analysis - LA Bogarus

Ойындар

Bogarus is one of those very, very interesting nations. In the midgame, the Bogarusian mage corps is extremely powerful and flexible, capable of finding a way around almost any defense and cleaning out almost any style of opposing army - and in the lategame, Bogarus is one of the most potent Blood nations of the age. It's getting to that mid or late game that's the problem, because the troop lineup they have access to is almost entirely garbage! Bogarus is one of the few nations I would say NEED to take a god capable of expansion, and careful research prioritization in the early game is crucial to ensure that you have the countermeasures you need to ward off a quick rush from your neighbors - but if you can manage it, and get to turn 20 or 24 with a reasonable number of provinces, Bogarus' extremely potent communions will suddenly open up a huge and powerful variety of battlemagic and national summons.

    Man, the five-fold angels have got to be the most disturbing thing I have seen in this game so far, and in Dominions that's a pretty high bar. Also, I find it pretty hilarious that these guys are spies, you'd think the no hands and giant skin wings would give them away...

    well, the most disturbing thing about them it's that they real-life based (that's some hardcore Orthodox Christian Protestantism to you) and if their skopets' sects were able to hide from KGB, surviving right until 90s when surviving members came out due to proclaimed freedom of religion, the chances are they would be able to hide from feudal authorities in dominion setting too.

    I want to mention that if one goes full scales (and you should with bogarus) then bogarus heavy cav is enough for a decent expansion (if played well, you can even get 20+ provinces on test games against no other nation). But is tricky so practice it a lot.

    Well it's not a unit that solves all of this nation's problems. But at 17 research points a pop, and potentially 20 if you go max magic. Getting to level 3 research before contact with other players isn't out of the question. A host of options open up at level 3 for Bogarus due to their magic paths. Simple air elemental spam would probably deter or end most cap rushes.

    Wouldn’t taking high scales on Bogarus be waving a flag to everybody in the general vicinity “I have hilariously dangerous magic access, have amazing research, and am a blood nation to boot, I have nothing that can kill your experienced expansion parties except mediocre cav, and this is the best shot your going to get.” Seems like Sceleria’s threat level without any of the chaff generation.

    For anyone watching this now, GC's video is great except for one part I respectfully disagree with - you don't need an awake Pretender or a hell bless to expand with Bogarus. The key to expansion is the holy 3 Eparch. At only 145 gold and 2 commander points, you can recruit 3 every two turns to support your expansion troops. They are essentially evocation mages with their smite attack especially if you have a good one like Astral, Air, or Death. I can reliably get 13-16 provinces by turn 12 using just Eparchs, a small number of Mala Druzhina, and the Voi militia with javelins. 5-6 Eparchs will melt even a heavy cav province as long as they have blockers. This tactic opens you up to taking an expensive rainbow or dormant titan or even a meme incarnate bless for your recruit-everywhere sacreds that comes online after turn 12 without wrecking your scales. For example, I have Chill Aura - Stygian Flesh - Luck with a Dormant pretender and only had to take -3 scales.

    i've done the firebird thing, and they don't really pay for themselves in gems, what they do is spawn shitloads of mines my capital had like 7 mines of different varities, running around with all of them spawned labs semi-reliably and that gave gems so if you do that enough i guess you could get your gems back. or they might actually pay off in general gem income, just not in fire.

  • @miniaturecolossus5242
    @miniaturecolossus52425 жыл бұрын

    CG, I'm sorry to ask but did you even try to expand with scales? Because as other have said, it is completely possible. The tricky part is getting those first few provinces in you cap circle so have enough resources to mass that heavy cavalry. After that the cavalry just steamroll indies in enough numbers, which you can get since you took great scales. Also, since no unit is cap only you can start filling your cap circle with forts as soon as you have the money, and you do have a lot of money since your recruits are not that expensive in terms of gold and, again, you took great scales. Also Master of Names in magic 3 will research crazy fast. Rushing someones cap with an awake expander is quite risky since pretenders take big penalties in enemy dominion, so I'm not sure how much of a worry this is in reality. As for Zhayedans, they only have 11 MR, which for a 125 gold hard to mass sacred is not much. I haven't tested it but I would guess spells like mind burn and paralyze would do quite a number on a squad of Zhayedans. Also, I think you're underselling the Fivefold angel. They're only 10 gold/year more in upkeep than the Occultist, and this is probably worth the extra blood level when hunting. And it's Bogarus' only recruitable sacred mage (not counting Skopets obviously) so they benefit from whatever bless you might have. Btw, Black hoods are good for patrolling before you get access to upkeep free summons.

    I did, and yes it *can* work - emphasis on can. It can also very much not work, or at least bottleneck you awkwardly, because Malaia Druzhina aren't all that much better than indie Knights or LA Heavy Cavalry in general. In my opinion it's a pretty significant gamble, and let's be honest; Bogarus' early game is already a high-stakes gamble. Trying to play full scales Bogarus is absolutely BEGGING to get rushed by two or three neighbors simultaneously.

    @@GeneralConfusionPlays What is about Bogarus that makes you think they are so much more dangerous than any other LA blood nation like Ulm, Ragha, Mictlan, Xibalba etc? Why would there be so much more of a rush to kill Bogarus than anything else? And, yes there is a risk that expansion goes poorly, but how is that really different from most nations? Hell, even with an awake expander there is still a risk it gets nailed by the RNG and you fail miserably. Also, if you take great scales you can make due with fewer provinces and you'll look less tasty to your neighbors as well. (This depends a bit on the meta though.)

  • @GeneralConfusionPlays

    @GeneralConfusionPlays

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@miniaturecolossus5242 Bogarus is a better target in the early game because they're easier to kill. Ulm, Ragha, and Mictlan all have fairly solid early-game answers - Ragha, in particular, is hell on wheels in the early game. Bogarus, on the other hand, just isn't scary before they hit research level 5 or so. Since Dominions greatly rewards winning wars with minimal loss, preying on a relatively weak nation early on is excellent strategy; that way you grow without giving up much, which helps you snowball enough to hopefully be in a dominant position over your rivals in the midgame. It's not that lategame Bogarus is a better Blood nation than lategame Mictlan - though I would say that their strong S/B access and variety of available crosspaths makes them competitive - it's that fighting through Malaia Druzhina is easier than fighting through a larger number of hellblessed Jaguar Warriors.

    Miniature Colossus there are a lot of late age independents that will give you problems expanding with only heavy cavalry. If the resource heavy provinces in your cap circle have Knights, crossbow men or barbarians in large numbers it will slow you down a lot as you try to amass enough heavy cav early. You will also have large attrition especially to independent crossbowmen. The much bigger reason you need an awake expander is because you are an easy target otherwise. If you are only massing heavy cavalry the opponents with heavy blessed sacreds will run you over and it's likely to be 2 or 3 of them rushing you in an attempt to compete for the prize of your capital.

    Kievan Rus is a fake name made up by western historians. No fucking person living in the region called it like that. It was Rus (or Ruthenia), plain and simple. The very concept of independent state and a nation on it's own in Ukraine's region was fabricated by Austria not sooner than in 19th century to destroy Russia from inside by separatism movements.
