Dominant Solo Victory! | Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2023 Highlights - Men

Спорт

Liège-Bastogne-Liège is the oldest of the five Monuments, with its first edition being held way back in 1892. The race known as La Doyenne (The Old Lady) is 257.8km long, backloaded with climbs including the legendary Côte de la Redoute (1.6km at 9.4%) and the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons (1.3km at 11%). Tadej Pogačar's aiming to make it an Ardennes triple to sign off the sping classics season in style!

ofcourse completely and fully agreed !!!, he does win many races he participates in, but his riding style suits that people do not begin racing against him, annd that he just races and attacks plays also in his advantage.

What an era we are living in. Grand Tour winners being World Champions and multiple Monument winners. This feels like what 50s until 80s must have been like. Shame, we couldn’t see Pog and Evenepoel battling it out. Respect for the win though! First double La Doyenne win since Bartoli in 98.

Great victory by Remco Evenepoel!! When I looked at his face before his attack I could already see that he seems to be at ease while the rest was already struggling. Basically 5 to 6 riders dominating one-day races and 3week tours was at first exciting, and it is when several of them start at the same time. However if only 1 of them starts it gets very boring. Great ride from Evenepoel, but prefer the gap in skills between riders wouldn't be this big.

Even if Soudal didnt have a team to pull back the break, Ineos or any of other teams would want to control it. Even if they wouldnt, Remco dropping everybody by minute and a half means that he can take 2 and a half minutes on tired break if he attacks solo from 55km out. With one rider clearly a level above anyone else, it doesnt look like a true team sport.

@@cervin1865 Based on what we saw over the last weeks, it would have been a close battle between Pog and Remco, with Pidcock as an outside contender. But I don’t think Remco could have won without his team keeping the break (and Tratnik, who was flying) within reach. Vervaeke destroyed himself pulling the peloton ahead of Redoute . In addition, van Wilder set such a suffocating pace on Redoute that apart from Pidcock everyone was already boiling when Remco attacked. A great team effort, with Remco closing it off. A damn shame that Pog wasn’t there. It could have been an epic battle.

As someone who was an amateur bicycle racer for over 25 years, and the survivor of more crashes than I really care to remember, I can tell you that is easier said than done. Plus one time I did keep my hands on the handlebars during a massive pack sprint finish crash, I ended up with a severely sprained wrist, as my thumb got bent back on the bars when I went down, so that doesn't guarantee lesser injury.

Attila Valters (the jumbo rider who signaled to the motorbike) thought that the camera motorcycle was sitting too close in front of the peleton which was creating a draft and allowing the Soudal-Quickstep team to push the pace faster. Jumbo-Visma had their rider Jan Tratnik up the road in a break away so Valters wanted to make sure that the peloton wasn't getting any help from the motorcycles as they chased down the remaining breakaway.

I don’t know what it is, but I don’t like Remco. He is a great champion and has got incredible talent, but I don’t like seeing him win. It seems like there is less soul or drama in his wins. I have more feeling with Wout, Pogi and VdP, is it because they are more likable guys? But in the end it is ofc completely my problem, because he is going to win a terrible lot.

I feel the same way, and I'm Belgian. I think it has something to do with his 'swagger' attitude. He was a footballer for a long time, and he brings some of that Christiano Ronaldo 'look at how awesome I am" attitude. I mean, the win celebration today.. its just cringe for me. I prefer a more humble personality like Tadej.. who just seems to enjoy himself.

@@dclark142002 Yes, much more humble, in interviews, in the way he celebrates, the way he deals with adversity etc. Again I'll compare to football: Remco is Christiano Ronaldo, Tadej is Lionel Messi. They obviously both know they're good, they both show it, but it is just different style. That is how I see it anyways.

Dominant solo victory without Tadej Pogacar in the race is superfluos , in my humble opinion . I mean , statistically speaking , check the procycling stats for these two riders : Pogacar and Evenepoel . There is enough to see who is who . Not to speak for this spring results and races and , why not opponents . Tadej races against : Van Aert , Van der Poel , Vingegaard !!! And Remco raced against ... ?!? I mean , in UAE tour he was surpassed by Adam Yates in one stage with some climbs ... What are we talking about ? No one remembers Tour de Flanders 2023 ? No one ? Why Remco whasn't there ? All I'm trying to say is Remco take a very easy victory without Pogacar in the race . And I do have a question in my mind : Why Pogacar crushed from the favorites ? Why him ? Why not Evenepoel ? And another one : Why a favorite rider for this race did crush ? I guess these are some good questions . I am not sugesting anything at all . But still , why did Pogacar crushed ? He never crushed like this to abandon the race . And another one : If he is the nr 1 in the world , why is someoene else champion in the world ? Why , because won a one day race ??? 🤣🤣🤣 It must be change the championship style from a one day race to a at least 7 days tour . And now we are talking . Isn't cycling about endurance and strategy ? Hope Tadej will recover fain and fast ! He rides way to nice and so different , in a very good and entrtaining way , than all the other cyclists . And I forget , didn't Tadej won Il Lombardia with Remco in the race ? So ....

Were you watching the same race? Evenepoel attacked on La Redoute, only Pidcock was able to follow and he blew up. Then Evenepoel simply increased his gap until he got over the Roche aux Faucons, then too it easy on the wet roads to the finish. As the Pidcock said when interviewed, he decided that there was now way they were going to catch Evenepoel, so he settled for a place on the podium.

Most boring monuments race I've ever seen tbh. Evenepoel also the most unlikable winner - comes across as super arrogant, used to being entitled from too young an age perhaps? He's constantly whinging during the race and it all seems so calculated and passionless with a lack of humility. He is superstrong, I'll give him that, but...nah! Oh well, nevermind - I'll be rooting for Roglic, Pogacar, WVA and Almeida.
