Domenico Scarlatti - 3 Sonatas. K.490, K.213, K. 146
0:01 Sonata in D major, K.490 (Cantabile)
4:44 Sonata in D minor, K. 213 (Andante)
8:44 Sonata in G major, K. 146 (Allegro)
Sheet music available here...www.classicalguitarist.ca/publ...
Thanks to all who purchased the Vivaldi score. It really helps to financially support what I love doing. The sheet music for these sonatas has very precise fingerings, as I found it helped my students learn the pieces much better.
I will make 5 Sonatas available for streaming after the next video.
Here are three sonatas that were made famous (on guitar at least) by three of my heroes. The first sonata is inspired by a Spanish saeta, which is a slow religious piece usually for voice and percussion. The repeated rhythm throughout the sonata imitates what the percussion plays, while the florid melodies imitate the singer. One of the gods of guitar Manuel Barrueco recorded this on his famous "300 years of guitar masterpieces" album, which was hugely influential to me. I don't believe it was published, but it's a pretty straightforward piece to arrange. The double trills are so fun, I wish the piece had more.
The second sonata is one of my favourites, and in my mind is associated with John William's Seville Concert recording, although there are earlier recordings. The piece begins with a single voice, then a duet in an almost fugal style, and continues to grow in Scarlatti's distinct fashion. The light was beautiful that morning so we decided to show off the church a little. Thanks to my amazing wife for making this a much easier process!
The third sonata I first heard on a Leo Brouwer record that my old teacher Eli Kassner played for me. It is a quick little capricious sonata that can be played in less than 2 minutes if you ignore the repeats like I do. Like all my arrangements, i tried to honour the original score, which in this case amounted to substantial differences from the Brouwer arrangement.
I hope you enjoy these works and there will be another video with two more sonatas very soon....and 8 string Bach is coming.

I've been a cellist for my entire life...I wish I had taken this up earlier. I'm completely infatuated with classical guitar.

I know several cellists learned to play classical guitar. The best known was Konrad Ragossnig. He was cellist first and changed to guitar after listening Andres Segovia

I am a classical guitarist I wish I had taken up sitar it’s just out of this world no western instrument comes close to it
Drew, to listen to you and to see you while playing is just what we need in these days. For one who as an amateur has been practising guitar playing for over 60 years one wander how a human being is able to handle this instrument as you are.
Some of the best Scarlatti I've heard.
I, too am infatuated with the guitar. I listen to classical guitar pieces daily, as I have for 30+ years. I cannot play due to my disability, but am grateful for my good hearing. The guitar is ‘king’.
Unbelievable technique. Sublime. You’re my new favourite guitarist. Bravo, sir.
Love Scarlatti!!! Awesome interpretation by one of the best!!! Beautiful touch and so playful!!! Bravo, Drew Henderson!!! ❤️👏🔥
Sounds amazing! Tone, dynamics and speed, incredible control, Drew is the whole package!

Beautiful music of course. But what a master this man is of the instrument. I have never heard such mastery and musicality on a classical guitar. Brilliant.
Beautiful playing- both in execution and conception. You do know, don't you, that Scarlatti is next to impossible on keyboard... it looks like a bloody nightmare on GUITAR! Your r hand finger control is unbelievable. Well done mate. EXQUISITE. Man, you're so good I can't stand it!!!

@@JoanKSX after I listened Drew playing K490, I said....I need to listen the K490 played on harpsichord. I still like better the Drew guitar :) Unbelievable sound! 😍
I guess the "thumbs downs" are from folks with jittery fingers that missed the "thumbs up"? Not many people who can hit all those hammer-on's and pull-offs so fast and accurate. Really enjoyed this! Thanks!
Drew this is amazing! Your ease and execution while spending as much care in the musicality is so incredible. Particularly K. 213 is so beautiful congratulations 🥳
I love Scarlatti! I just watched the Now Hear This episode on him so this was great timing :) This was an incredible performance. I’m amazed at the level of control of dynamics and tempo. Also I’m impressed by your transcriptions! Thanks for uploading.
Wow incredible guitar playing and great performance The music is very very beautiful Amazing work 👍💕
Drew - wonderful thoughtful and passionate playing. As a guitar player myself for 60 years, I was fortunate to hear Segovia in person as he performed in Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Segovia had a presence from the stage. I see you with a similar composure and purpose. I grew up listening to the Scarlatti harpsichord Sonatas - father and son. Ralph Kirkpatrick's recording best captured (for me) the pace, playfulness and utter genius of the musical thoughts weaving in and out of the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas composed. This is the first time I have experienced the intensity of Scarlatti performed successfully on the classical guitar. I will look for future recordings from you. - Michael, 11Jul2020
Gorgeous playing Drew - masterful!
drew drew's precision is awesome!!! he needs to do more concerts!!!!
Drew, absolutely fantastic music making. I always expect the highest quality when I’m looking at a video you have produced. There’s never a doubt!
Exactly as crisp as it has to be when it has to be. I can tell that, despite your concentration, you're not taking the tone of that beautiful guitar for granted. This is really amazing. I have to listen to more Scarlatti...
Terrific performance! I adore the Scarlatti sonatas, and the Sonata in G has been a favorite for many years. I have never heard it played by a guitarist before. Thanks so much!
Bravo Maestro! 👏👏👏 And thank you for all brilliant interpretations. Please continue. 😊
Your videos are just so perfect. The lightning, the acoustics, the edits, the technique, but most of all: the musicality.
Sounds amazing Drew, always love hearing your playing!
Absolutely gorgeous in every aspect! From tone production to phrasing and musicality to stylistic approach to camera work and lighting -- fantastic!

Such beautiful music so beautifully and masterfully arranged and played. Loved every note and nuance of this. Fantastic!
I was soothed by the beautiful and wonderful performance. Thank you very much.
Beautifully light playing, great tempo control, good choice of Scarlatti sonatas, great setting and well-filmed. Thoroughly enjoyed it all. Great stuff!
Keep the music coming Drew Henderson, 👏👏👏👏 I am a big Fan of yours now. Love the Scarlatti pieces.
Bravo! So clean, so elegant, and very soulful... Thank you :)
Perfect as always! You definitely are one of the bests guitarrists of the world!
Bravo Maestro. Amazing performance!!!
Making it sound so effortless and natural, which is of course very difficult and amazing! Thank you.
Самый любимый из всех) По-настоящему тонко и чувственно, как бы я хотел вас услышать в живую, просто мечта....
Wonderful performance! Truly Outstanding! Bravo!
So good, I had to listen a second time right away. Yes, John Williams - the Seville Concert. Congratulations on a wonderful performance. The recording and the video are world class, right along with your performance.
Чудове виконання і досконалий звук. Щиро дякую за насолоду.
Wao.. siempre es impecable maestro. Me encanta!
I haven't heard this piece since Manuel Barrueco recorded quite a few decades ago and very excited to listening the flawless rendition by virtuoso guitarist Drew Anderson.
Great pairing of these Sonatas. K. 146 is such a great contrast to the D minor Andante. Amazing playing as always!

@@DrewHendersonGuitar Scarlatti translates so well the guitar baroque music to harpsichord, like couperin did to the baroque lute, is far more sofisticated than any guitar composer, sanz, corbetta, robert de visee, guerau.
Amazing 🙏🙏and what a sound!!!
Great performance. Congrats for such way you play Barroque music, essence and soul.
Drew que bela sonoridade, musicalidade e execução limpa, bravo!! Congratulations !! From Brazil
I have discovered Scarlatti through you...thank you...beautiful performance.....
Bravo. Bravo. Bravo. Excelent Mr.
Beautiful guitar sound exelent playing !
brilliant and the ornamentation...wow !!
Wow you must have started playing before the age of 3 to have obtained such a perfect form for those trills....Bravo
wonderful clarity and skill.
Que se puede decir...excelente,un sonido limpio ejecución perfecta!!!!! Además, un escenario perfecto para estas músicas.
Beautiful interpretations!
Thank you sir for sharing this transporting music, lovely.
An excellent artist with super nunce and technics....Mr. Henderson, i wish you health and much more success...
Incredible!
Outstanding! I have always held Barrueco's versions as the benchmark for Scarlatti on solo guitar (and of course the Assad brothers for the duo version) but you have just raised the bar. Delightful!
amazing, you should record an scarlatti sonatas album
Bravo!!! Thans to your beautiful playing~~~
You are one of the best guitarists I've heard in a long time : stylistically, technically, musically. Keep going!
Sehr schön gespielt.
Interesting discussion of the pieces and Drew's guitar heroes. Williams is my first guitar hero. My guitar teacher gave me a copy of the Seville Concert video in 1994. In 1996, we saw Manuel Barrueco at the Backyard outdoor venue in Austin. Drew and his duo partner, Michael, have become my young guitar heroes.
Very nice Drew...Congrats !
Your back with another beautiful song, loved it! Stay safe always and God Bless.

Excellent technique,and superb guitar sound
Having trained in guitar, but lost my skills from giving it up for a long time I am staggered to find out just how far classical guitar standards have come in the last 20 years. If there is a more perfect guitarist in terms of tone and nuance than Drew I would be surprised.
Hemels mooi, prachtig gewoon! En dat met kunst nagels ;) Super!
Fucking killed it again Sir Drew! You are a true virtuoso!! Its always a good day when i see you've posted! Keep it up man!!
Honestly, I'm no expert. Can't play the guitar at all. But I've always had a love for hearing it. And you are absolutely astounding. I could listen to this video over and over. Thank you so much for sharing it. Your skill is stunning to say the least. I'm totally subscribing.

I have watched all of your videos Drew and thousands of classical guitar videos. I can honestly say that I think you are the greatest classical guitarist alive today. Your technique and musicality are on another level. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent.
Great stuff, and such a crisp sound. Also picking the trills (which I've noticed is a contemporary way of playing classical) seems to work very nicely, and requires great technique. Well done. The infamous Scarlatti.
Always such a treat to hear you play. Please come play in Oregon when it is safe to do so!
Great job!!!! bro, I love Scarlatti
Amazing.
Que bien suena la guitarra en el ámbito de la Iglesia. Me gustaría estar aunque sea detrás de una columna para llenar el alma de esa musicalidad !
Simplemente Exquisito.

There are many excellent performances of Scarlatti out there. But this sits on a level way above others.
