Dolgochification Part 1: 009 Bachmann Rheneas To Dolgoch!

The first of a two-part video following the conversion from Bachmann Rheneas to the Talyllyns Dolgoch in 009. Classic narrow gauge engine, and a crowd pleaser at the railway itself.
This conversion uses the Narrow Planet 'dolgoch conversion kit' which comprises of 3d printed, etched metal, and lost wax brass details.
the second part will show the painting, lining and finishing of the engine..soon.

Great Video and nice job with the conversion - some thoughts though if I may. 1. removing the coal in the bunker would be best done with rotary burrs in the Dremel. 2. I dare say Bachmann uses baked enamel paints so there is no need for primer. If the job is clean enough you could just prime straight over it rather than remove but just use a light spray from can or airbrush. 3. fitting resin or etched parts needs either CA or UV cured resin glue. I find the rubberised black CA good for the purpose as it gives plenty of time to position, is thick enough to fill gaps, shows up where it needs to be sanded back smooth removing the need to later fill.

Now that's a clever kit, using the 3D printed bits foe the structure and etched brass/nickel sheets for the detail, it's much better than trying to faff about getting perfectly accurate small detail on 3d printed plastic! Probably acts as a bit of scaffolding too so the cab isn't so fragile

Nicely done, I had a go at this kit a few years ago. Wish I had thought of using the Dremel to file those coal loads down I did mine by hand file. The extra details are certainly worth the extra effort, I did find it odd that you have to source your own parts to get the model looking like the prototype (mine is based on the loco around 1950) rather than everything you need being in the kit.

Hi George I'm surprised you did this given your passion for authenticity as this is not 009 and you can see the difference also you have concerns over the fourdees finish have you ever seen one I have one and can assure you the fordees models are excellent level of detail is second to none .maybe it has something to do with your love affair with all things westcliff of which I have Douglas which you raved about well fourdees are far superior .with regards to westcliff it took approx 7 weeks to get my Douglas due to very poor communication with Alec the one that arrived was very poor and Alec did replace it which took another couple of weeks but the replacement was satisfactory

  • @GWilliamsonModels

Hi mate, I have used fourdees a number of times in the past, and I have their body to use for Edward Thomas, but I’m just not comfortable with the finish I’ve seen on the Dolgoch body. This has nothing to do with westcliff though, the kit is narrow planet, and yes, westcliff do have print issues aswell, as any 3D print will, but I find their details appear much finer. But yeah, I know there’s issues around contacting Alec, they’re working full time, in uni, and got this on the side. They’re working on a website which should help with that

Just a minor note: the whoosh at the beginning comes out *incredibly* loud through headphones compared to anything else in the rest of the video (at least for me) which can be a bit disconcerting - might be worth trying to tone that down a bit if it's feasible to do so.
