Sams trains Factory Era 1 Mixed freight wagons , unboxing, Testing, fiddly coupling bars derailing

Nice era 1 wagons , I had problems coupling the wagons together with the supplied bars, (warning fiddly and time-consuming).
When using the tension lock coupler supplied derailing in reverse over points. more Tension lock couplers please two for each wagon a must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for me.

Hi Paul, thanks so much for buying some of the wagons and for your video and feedback! I'm so sorry to hear you had derailment issues - but I can give you some solutions/support! 1 - Try using the barrels. The flatbed is very light without them, and the barrels are quite weighty, which is another reason they were included! 2 - Perhaps try using a different loco, as the Hornby 08 has a long wheelbase which makes the couplings swing out quite a way, which can pull small/light wagons off the track - I think it looks like that's what's happened here. Ideally these are designed to run with small, early steam locos - and I couldn't replicate these issues when I tested the wagons with those. 3 - If you're not satisfied, drop me an email and I can arrange a return and refund for you. Nobody should have to put up with products that don't perform 100% as they should, so please don't put up with this is you are unhappy! Thanks again for the video and the feedback - the couplings are indeed very fiddly, but unfortunately they have to be that way to be compatible with Hornby's locos and stock :( All the best, Sam :)

Hi Sam, thank you for taking time to message, and view the video, I know I am running the wagons on the wrong loco, and I should have era 1 steam. I don't have any of the early steam locos yet. but I am planning on getting one soon once funds allow. I was going to add some weights underneath all the wagons, just to give a better weight and ride. I did make a school boy error in purchasing these as I wanted for them for my layout Cromford. but forgot I was building in N gauge, not oo gauge this time. BTW I am happy with the wagons, keep up the good work with designing wagons and locos, your models are well designed and great value. All the best

Sam, how do you load the van as there’s no doors on it? 😮

The wagons look very well printed, but as delivered they are not intended to be fully finished RTR products. They can be made to look a lot better when putting some work in. Remove the fine spider threads which you see on the underframes and some other parts, and sand smooth the van roof and underframe parts where you can get in reasonably. Light scraping with a pointed scalpel blade gets you in the difficult to get to places. The wagon bodies are good as they are. Then some painting in the colours of choice, maybe a light coat of spray putty on the underframe to hide the layering of the printing proces. I would add some 10 grams of weight to each wagon, in the form of loads or when leaving them empty use 'Liquid Lead' glued to the underside which is fine lead shot sold in bottles to add weight in those places where you can't use lead off cuts or wheel balancing weights. These wagons are a nice initiative and a great addition to the era 1 locomotives and coaches sold by the major brands

I would send them back to the retailer for a refund. That's what Sam would do.

Excellent review Paul, and particularly refreshing as it doesn't mention cost, is respectful to the manufacturer and doesn't try to advise whether to buy or not to buy, leaving viewers to make their own minds up. I have bought products from my local model shop which have had a bad review on KZread, and have been perfectly happy with them and their value, hence my reticence to heed 'recommendations' based on one persons view of one example. Well done, first time I've seen your channel. Hope to see more, as it seems to me the hobby needs more like you.

The reason the flat wagon kept derailing on the first test was mainly because you had a light wagon pushing heavier stock through the pointwork, curves. I always marshal heavier stock nearer to the loco.

I have been informed PECO narrow gauge wagons share the same de-railing issues anyone have any info on that. The close coupling issue is one I tackled with my own range of narrow gauge rolling stock, that have been on test for 8 months and seem to have passed the smell test. One of our first releases when we go live Mid Aug/Sept 24..... By the way our 009 axle box's are a bit more detailed and have GWR on them ;) As for the packaging.... that is very poor, the product should come in blisters.

Yes I agree these do need more weight, not sure how to add to the flat bed wagon, but the coal wagons, weights can fit under the coal loads and box van weights can fit inside.

@@henrybest4057 I don't think the extra weight of the barrels will stop it as they are very light, I think its the tension lock coupler that is the problem, I am going to try the tension lock on all the wagons, to see if its just the flat bed which has the problem. I should have tried this on the video. I am still happy with the wagons

Nice review. The wagons look ok for 3D printing which of course is inferior to injection moulding. If you can find any lead shot of the small weights that they used for fishing years ago, you could find ways of adding that to increase the weight.

@@andrewhead6267 Hi Yes 3D printing will never be as good as injection moulding, but looking at them on a layout through your normal vision, they look fine, Thank you for the tip on the fishing weights, good idea.
