    If I may add to this video. A little information that took me a while to find. After you've done your Dolby Atmos mix and want to render the Binaural mix all you have to do is set the renderer to binaural downmix and export the audio as normal. Another thing I found out (on official Nuendo channel actually 😁) was that in similar way to the above example, you can export your Atmos mix into any multi channel mix. Just set the renderer to a desired chanel configuration and while exporting make sure you set your Render as: to split channels. This method does require another step to finish the mix though. All exported channels has to be loaded into fresh multichannel session and then exported as multi channel file (non Dolby Atmos). It's a bit messed up proces but for PC users or those who don't want to spend extra money on licence for Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite it is a solution. 😉

    Thanks for the video, more detailed than the one done by Dom Sigalas for example. I do think binaural audio or similar is the future! This should make mixing easier with more space to place audio in, but a bigger job for the mixer/producer at the same time, although for the listener, I think they'll enjoy it! I would probably create an object from all the audio tracks for the best possible mixing experience. A hi-hat going round your head, a conga going front then back etc sounds good me thinks, at least, simple automation of layers to maybe a monotonous track can add so much interest.

    Really great video!!! Now I understand the routing of Dobly Atmos. Also great you have added other Youtubr-links for more information about this subject. Now I have find out that the loudness level of a Dolby Atmos mix must be at or below -18 LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) in order to play back correctly on a system or device compatible with Dolby Atmos. But what about mastering if you have mixed in Dolby Atmos? Greetings from Rotterdam

    Loving your videos, and now using Cubase Pro 12 again - having been Ableton for a long time, one question for you, that maybe you could do a video on - in Ableton you can create a chain on the channel, often Dry and Wet and effects on the Wet and then balance the volume of both - (other than Groups) is there a way to achieve this on Cubase Pro 12?

  • @LanewoodStudios

    @LanewoodStudios

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't think it is possible within a single channel in Cubase unless you use some sort of third party meta plugin like DDMF. But frankly I would just put the parallel chain in an FX track. If you then want to control the total volume with a single fader, you can either use a group or VCA fader. Does require more work than in Ableton if I understand you correctly.

    Great video. I heard that objects lose bass content (such as when moved out from a bed). What's your take on that issue? Also I wonder whether enough mixing tools are available to create nice and balanced mixes. I assume I need to use 7.1.2 reverbs as well as 7.1.2 compressors/limiters?

I’ve only used stereo tools so far myself and just multiple of them. I think the updated Seventh Heaven reverb is 7.1.x so that might be an interesting option for this application. You are welcome. Like I am explaining in the video I do not have a full 7.1.4 setup in my humble home studio and will likely not get one either. I was just using the binaural renderer to dip my feet into the water with Atmos. I'm using an RME ADI-8DS as interface for my studio.

  • @jrgroberts

    I know this is an old video and my comment is late. But I am moving towards Atmos setup and reviewing all the material I can find that is helpful, as this is. The big problem for me is the lack of custom HRTF profiles in the binaural renderer, and binaural rendering for me is an illusion that just does not work. I get a slight impression of height, and a tiny impression of movement from front to middle, but nothing more. My ears simply are not fooled. That means I have to wait for Atmos custom HRTF or set up 7:1:4 in my home room, which is awkward though not impossible. I have the same issues with HRTF in other default binaural renderers, and so I do wonder how many people are close enough to the default head size to hear Atmos spatial effects! Waves studio modelling does allow a custom head size and ear separation in the HRTF and that helps a lot...

  • @LanewoodStudios

    @@LanewoodStudios Maybe the binaural downmix algorithm requires some work, because I just saw another ATMOS demo (not from Cubase) that actually sounds more convincing, still not 100% binaural, but almost outside your head and with a clear front/behind difference. The Cubase 12 demo from Dom Sigalas is lacking binaurality too... so perhaps Steinberg has an issue here.

    @@gastonpossel Every head is different. There is not really a one-fits-all HRTF. There are special software packages out there including personalized measuring of the HRTF that will give you a better exoerience. I guess the general binaural renderers use a works-somehow-binaural approach. If one finds a solution that works for him/her, it will very likely not work for all others, with a little luck for a few others. So I think it will always be a compromise compared to actually having multiple speakers. But if all of this really takes off I’m sure it will be improved.

    Similar to how lighting works in 3D software, the real magic happens with completely accurate reverb. Great lighting comes not just because of the light source, but because of the accuracy of how it interacts with various objects in the environment. A big reason you can tell where things are in real life is because of the soundwaves bouncing off other things. In software with no reverb or surfaces to reflect from, the sounds are going in to a vacuum.

  • @gastonpossel

    @gastonpossel

    @@ViRiXDreamcore Interesting comment. Have you been into an anechoic chamber? I've been into several, there are no sound reflections on the walls or the floor (you walk on net over absorption wedges). You can't hear your own voice by airwaves but only by bone/tissue propagation. It's a very unnatural and disturbing experience, and we acouticians like to describe it as being on a hillside with deep soft snow and overcast sky (the closest natural scenario that sounds like this). Still you can determine the direction of a sound source (in fact, augmentedly, with no reflections to mess with it), your brain compares the level and phase of each of your ear signals. Level comparison also let you judge the distance in very close proximity, but with no reflections is harder to judge the distant of farther sources. In real life, we recognize signals with more reverberation as coming from a more distant source (that's an incredible feat of signal processing by our brains!).

    Great video. You just sparked my curiosity in this theeme that I already had rainchecked. Will you be using dolby atmos for all your recordings? as I understand from your video, the audiofile is the same, only metadata attached tells the playing device where to send the song's info to make it Stereo or Dolby Atmos.... so I would think, if I record everything from now in DA, it facilitates the entry of your music to some niches and renders it kind of future proof.... But, are there possible downsides? maybe Spotify or other stream services would unknowinlgy kind of penalize your songs with their processing of your uploading song file... or Is the common usual Stereo File secure in Dolby Atmos? (could the extra info on the file or in the metadata pose a threat?)

    Thank you! Well, the recording part stays the same it is just the mixing and mastering that will be different. Most artists that provide spatial audio seem to do it in addition to providing a regular stereo mix. That’s even the way our distributor requires it if you want to provide your song to Apple Music with spatial audio. You have to submit your song twice, once as a regular stereo wav and once as an ADM file. For my band Awash I’ve never supplied a Dolby Atmos mix for distribution but we may give it a try at some point.

    @@LanewoodStudios Of course, I understand that at this moment is just in the Mix and Master, I got that right, I even would just have to use de BinAural over earphones to simulate it (only have to outputs for stereo in my Apollo Twin X... next one might be a Steinberg interface, capable of scaling it to dolby Atmos... but not in the short time) But, you answered my question allRight. The Stereo File is submitted separatedly from the DA one. Got it! I might give it a try too, thanks a lot for your response and I will, in spare time, keep learning bit by bit from the links you commented and the next 500 Miles where they forward to 👍 , I already saw part of the first video and it is super interesting. ahoy!!! 🍻

    Thanks Line, yes I'm using the control room as shown in the video and have set the ATMOS bus with the renderer plugin as 'Main Mix' to be routed to the control room. Now the control room is setup with a stereo monitor pair so that's where the binaural signal end up in my case. The Cubase manual indicates how to get it working without control room as well though. Check the section called 'Setting up a Dolby Atmos Project Manually'. It can be a bit finicky to setup but when it works it works ;). By the way have you set your audio interface to 512 buffer size and 48KHz? If not it will not work at all.

    You can start with a stereo mix first and then convert it to a Dolby ATMOS setup and mix it for ATMOS. I think that is probably easiest if you've never done this.

    I haven’t looked for a multi-channel reverb in Cubase but I believe Liquidsonics has at least one. But you can also just use a stereo reverb and assign it to where you want the reverb to come from.

    Hi there great video, I just subscribed to ur channel. Question, How do i convert to spotify and apple muisc format from the Broadcast wave format? I'm told the cubase ADM export which is in Broadcast wave format isn't accepted on Apple and Spotify, as it will end up being a downmix version and not retain the positioning in the space. Thank you

  • @LanewoodStudios

    @LanewoodStudios

    2 жыл бұрын

    Where did you hear that? Because the ADM export is exactly the format that retains all the positioning for the individual objects. That is why these files are often so big because they contain the individual object audio.

    @@TheRealATema ok that's very annoying. I wouldn't immediately think Cubase's ADM export is to blame though. The requirements regarding delivering a spatial audio mix are quite strict. E.g. these are the requirement from distrokid and the ADM file format is only one of them: support.distrokid.com/hc/en-us/articles/4403029574675-Does-DistroKid-Support-Dolby-Atmos- If your peak levels or target loudness are incorrect the file may also not be accepted, and ADM export does not automatically take care of that. I would try to find out what exactly was wrong with the ADM file.

So this video is the other way around, first explaining of how it works, then listen to some spatial audio. But the video is mostly about understanding how Dolby Atmos works in Cubase and not so much how you would do a Dolby Atmos mix in practice. See the links in the description for that. And don't be cruel to your monitor please 😉.

    Every Music in Dolby Atmos I listened was messed up because people don't know all rules about sum and best placmet for different elements. I was disappointed listening how sounds cancel each other or don't have movement that makes sense and it dot me lost and I just wanted to stop. I think that new format will be more dominant because regulations are already voted and in law when overall production was lowered by more than half and no one will make Dolby Atmos equipment but 3D virtual algorithm is more possible to happen.
