I actually really liked the 2014 DVD of the movie, I have it in my collection and it's nice to have, 4K is definitely better in terms of the lighting, but DVD still stands strong for me.

His entire comment section on that video are filled with people calling out how he is either ignorant or blatantly misinforming people about Godzilla's film history and lore. It is kinda cool to see a fandom uniting against criticism

You’re conflating commercial success with cultural impact. They aren’t the same thing and skipper is correct. People still remember and talk about Jurassic park, it’s still a cultural icon. The same isn’t true for Jurassic world, I doubt many people could even tell you the exact plot of that movie or say it had an impact on their life. If anything Jurassic worlds commercial success only proves that Jurassic park is still a cultural icon because people were nostalgic for Jurassic park and wanted to see the world again.

The new Jurassic World films are too woke and convoluted, just like most of the Monsterverse films. Godzilla (2014) was fine, but not what I expected and Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) were okay follow-ups, all other Monsterverse films and series after that just seem way too goofy, not well organized, and without any real story.

He see it as "man vs nature" doesn't mean that's right. The whole origin concept of Godzilla is humans vs the monster they create and this concept reused over and over again even in Godzilla minus one, it's a call back for the horror and the danger of nuclear weapons and Godzilla is the literal representation of walking nuclear monster. There's no "nature" there, because it was designed that way to make Godzilla unnatural which why most of Godzilla's concept in the film include mutation and such. I would understand if he makes an argument of "man vs nature" for certain Godzilla's movie like in the anime maybe, but to generalized Godzilla as "man vs nature" is just blatantly wrong.

It's actually embarrassing how bad Skipper's video is. He clearly just wanted to cash in on the "hollywood vs. non hollywood" culture war shit created by idiots. If he did even the smallest amount of research his video wouldn't exist because he'd realize he was wrong. How do you just throw like 30+ movies and three animated shows into the garbage. I'm not even saying he has to watch all of them (although he said he watched a bunch of them before making the video so I guess he actually should have watched some of them) but if you're gonna make a big ass video making a point like "Hollywood should NEVER be allowed to make a Godzilla film" you need to do some research on the films. Hell he doesn't even mention how after Final Wars, Toho was cool with letting the franchise die. It's been said by a longtime Toho producer that because of the Monsterverse, Toho were inspired to make more Godzilla projects. Resulting in the creation of Shin Godzilla, Minus One, Singular Point and the Planet of the Monsters trilogy. Godzilla wouldn't be around anymore if it wasn't for Hollywood. Also nobody tell him that one of Minus One's director's favorite Godzilla films is the 2014 film lmao. Honestly he should make a followup video just admitting that he rushed that video out and didn't know what he was talking about. He'd probably get at least some respect back from viewers. Sidenote Godzilla vs. Megalon is goated, that film gave us the Jet Jaguar theme and tail sliding Godzilla.

In the monster-verse while the nuclear narrative not there, Godzilla still represents the balance of nature. This has been stated many times in the movies, in the first movie the reason Godzilla deal with the mutos, they would have overpopulated the surface and cause an imbalance. This hero isn’t even true, sure some people will see the him as a hero, but in a reality they still consider him a threat. This was proven when he attacked in Florida as this video shows.

​@@joshuab3039The issue is that scene should have been emotionally compelling. It was not. The MV suffers from abysmally low writing and dialogue. But any criticism of the MV is immediately met with this "thou shalt not criticize the MV, it is the mose sacred and holy of all things. Any criticism is blasphemy" and it is shut down. 2014 has a good premise and a good start. But after Cranston's death, it became flat. KotM tried to have the spectacle while remaining serious without devoting anything to the human characters to make you take it serious. Gvk and GxK are just outright parodies of the franchise, relying on bathos to turn any potential chance for seriousness or emotional connection into a joke, same issue that plagues Marvel.

My main take away from Doctor Skipper is that he doesn’t understand what Undertones are. Nor does he bother to look up what the inspiration for the movie’s even were. The original Godzilla vs Kong was an open criticism of Japanese TV culture of the time. The Monsterverse has undertones that speak to climate change. And keep in mind I myself am not that big a Godzilla fan. I never dug all too deep into this franchise and even I can tell you most of the movies have something to say. They just don’t push it in your face again and again.

It's always nice to see everybody come together and hate someone for all the right reasons.😊

Jurassic Park effect is actually the fact that after the Jurassic movies come out, you see an upsurge in funding and research and people taking uni courses relating to dinosaurs. It's a well recognised phenomena

I knew all I needed when he didn’t mention Shin at all and acted like Minus One was a breath of fresh air from Toho Editing and overall production is pretty good tho, I actually watched the full thing and got a few laughs out of it

good point on bringing up GMK, becuase that's another movie that proves skip-boy wrong, that movie shows that a Godzilla film can be dark and serious while also having goofy fun monster action

As someone who has only watched Minus One, is obsessed with it, and has had mixed feelings about the silly reputation of the series after learning what it originally stood for; what an L take Skipper has. We Minus One fans don’t claim him. The lack of research is astounding. Even I could make a better video. Also as someone who is Japanese I can’t help but laugh. He’s always been Gojira. Seriously this guy _has_ watched G-1 right? They literally call him Gojira there. And he has a reputation as a hero here too and is a beloved character. There’s a pizza chain literally named after Godzilla because it wanted to be as beloved as him. He has a cute Chibi version. He’s a Japanese icon as much as Goku or Pikachu. Our view of him is as both a destructive force of nature and a beloved mascot. Also I feel mentioning Shin would have strengthened his point, where the hell is it.

5th video I’ve seen of this guy and I haven’t searched for any of them

when you fail so badly you get a whole fandom to unite to take you down a peg:

Quite ironic that toho and monsterverse fans were fighting but united against the man who had the worst take I have ever heard that my grandma whos dead heard it from above.

I’ve quickly leaned from the replies I’m getting on his video that his audience are entirely children who don’t care about accuracy and credibility

great video. GMK is my favorite classic goji film. I definetly agree the reiwa film hare more impactful than the monsterverse. I actually cared what happened to the humans in minus one as opposed to anyone from KoM or vs kong. but I can enjoy the monster verse for what it is no problem as well.

Quick correction at 5:12, it wasn't shot that dark. The theatrical release was much brighter, somehow the editors screwed up the home release so that you can't see shit.

As a long time godzilla fan (I'm 24 and I've loved these films since I was at least 5 years old) this whole video skipper did on the franchise made me want to peel the skin off my face and scream

I mean, it's kind of funny how he tried to make it seem like Toho isn't shady as hell when it comes to copyright even tho this is the same company that was basically breathing in the necks of Legendary when making their movie, them asking for liscence money for their monsters is the very reason they rather make their own monsters and that after the 98 fiasco was so upset and pissed off at the way the US handled their IP, along with pretentious takes by Ronald Emmerich of all people, that they decided to reboot the whole series again, made a jab at the 98 movie by refusing to acknowledge it and then later on bought the right to the 98 monster, gave him a quick cameo, had the most one sided battle in the entire franchise and then got instantly murdered purely out of spite. Plus, it's a Japanese company. Japanese companies are the biggest abusers of copyright in the world. Also kind of funny that he thought Minus One was special because it critiqued the Japanese goverment even tho the franchise constantly does that whenever they can. Even most of the times they bring him back usually comes along with a critique of Japan itself. GMK? A critique of how the Japanese goverment at the time wanted to basically alter history to try and erase everything that happened in WWII. Shin? A critique and satire directed at the Japanese goverment after having such a slow and incompetent response to the triple disaster that was so bad even the Yakuza looked better by comparasion. And even now Minus One? A warning about why war is bad because of the current events happening and the attitude of some of their citizens trying to act like Imperial Japan. And that's from the top of my head

The fact he pretty much admitted to not doing research, while telling everyone to research shit is just... Also, he accepted a sponsorship of an ai image bullshit, while complaining about modern things not having souls. What a hypocrite

Honestly, the idea that the first response to a giant lizard is a nuke, kinda makes sense, they use their greatest weapon with no reason or idea, just for it to make the giant lizard even more poweful

WHAT?!? The Godzilla franchise is evolving past its original Themes and ideas, and making new refreshing takes on the character instead of making copies of the original 1954 film?!!? THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!

How someone make a video essay about a character with decades of trajectory, and sound so barely investing on that trajectory

I Went to go see the original video and I can now feel my braincells dying off one by one.

So much of what he says could just as easily be said about tons of characters and franchises that are big and long running enough. Like I’m a big Batfamily fan. The first few comics Batman was in were pretty dark and brutal and full of things that would not be particularly recognizable as being what Batman is looking at them today. He had a gun and killed, even. Both things that not only does modern Batman not do but his strict rules around them are now super deeply imbedded and important parts of the character. Then we got Golden and Silver Age comics and stuff like the show in ‘66 which is a night and day difference to put it mildly. And just…. Robin/Nightwing just existing even is a massively different tone and spirit. Like… Batman went from grimdark noir detective stories sometimes with supernatural elements to stopping goofy evil hijinx with a kid sidekick in pixie boots! And then he started getting darker and grittier again but now very differently so than those first few comics and now look where we are. The latest Robin is his son that was trained from birth to be an assassin and has to relearn how the world works now and resist his mother trying to drag him back, for Pete sake! Oh but there’s been stories with real messages and meaningful content during all of these eras, even the whacky light hearted ‘60s comics! And even today there’s things like Li’l Gotham and plenty of toned down content for children and families! And even the dark stuff has vastly varying levels of darkness. For every Victor Zsasz or Dr. Pig there’s a Condiment King or Riddler. Batman content in DC Universe Online is very different from the Arkham games and both are very different from his roles in Injustice games. That’s just how a big IP works and there’s nothing inherently bad about it. The kid stuff isn’t necessarily less valuable than the adult stuff just because it’s a different corner of the IP and for a different demographic. Its existence doesn’t make the other content stop existing. A massive IP that’s really successful is not going to needlessly confine itself to every single piece of it fitting into one specific box. No, they’re gonna wanna expand it. You can plug in any number of other IPs and have lots of examples of their different parts. Godzilla has different branches, Batman has different branches, even Pokémon has different branches despite them all still being pretty family friendly (Legends Arceus and Mystery Dungeon are quite different from the main games and there’s a card game and multiple very different anime and manga adaptations… the manga ones being quite famously different…). He’s acting like he’s made some deep analysis there or that it means anything but he’s just describing capitalism and an IP having success. Really not a revelation.

I love how people like Skipper conveniently forget that it was the success of the monster verse that facilitated Minus One’s existence.

Godzilla can be multiple things (like you said) I had the Monsterverse as a kid and Godzilla was ONE thing in the series but not in EVERY movie (again like you said)

I never watch Doktor Skipper or even know that he existed, when his video of "Godzilla doesn't work in America" came out, I thought he'll talk about something like massive culture different, histories in the 30s ~ 50s, those kind of stuff as a main point, so when all the hate suddenly appears, I don't understand it. Now instead of watching his video I decide to watch this instead. And holy shit he got it both wrong, no wonder why he got all the hate

1:09 That image that you're referring to is public domain, but not the movie and the character due to an error that has never been resolved to this day And because the image got the expiration date, not the movie. Godzilla will never be public domain

Look at the Steamboat Willie situation. Only that short is public domain not Micky himself isn’t. copyright laws are complicated. In that whole 2049 might just refer to the American cut only. Much like how apparently the English dub of Godzilla vs Megalodon dub was accidentally made public domain because of a similar error. That latter led to a studio thinking Godzilla was Public domain and tried to release their own kaiju movie with Godzilla in the title. Only to get sued by Toho when they found out about it.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen pretty much the entire fanbase unite on something 🥲 nice video, always glad to see a fellow Godzilla fan spreading the good word
