Bought a Suburban once that probably never had it changed and the SUV had been used to tow horses at one point. Worst transmission I had; fluid was pitch black as soot and yet it was so thick that you couldn't move the gear shift easily so maybe the seller pulled a used car lot trick. The trans rear gear went under a month after purchase. I still have it since I had someone work on it for relatively cheap; $1,100 in 2015. He did it as a side job out of his garage.

Though I own a vehicle for long-distance drives, I'm always on my bicycle for any distance shorter than 7 miles, which is within 90% of points of interest. Your health, bank account, and the environment would improve significantly. Driving is a lot more costly than most of us think. One retirement guru estimated that the cost of driving is $15 per gollan of gas used, of course, he's adding up the depreciation of the vehicle and other negative externalities associated with driving.

Also worthy of mention is if you change the tire/wheel size (think wagon wheels), you MUST have the transmission reprogrammed to accommodate the different size. Otherwise, the transmission will slip, creating heat and damaging the torque converter.

Correct. I have a manual transmission truck which I purposely purchased because it was a manual. Easier to repair and less chance of a break down than an auto transmission. If only North America embraced manuals the average repairs would be significantly reduced.

Great video, you really demystify what can go wrong with an automatic transmission on a "modern car"! Unfortunately, I bought Ford's line about not changing the transmission fluid on my 2011 F-150 until I saw one of your videos. I did it at around 134K, but I drive very gently and don't pull a trailer, so hoping that it will go over 200K miles now. During the fluid change, the mechanic said the fluid looked pretty clean, and the magnet had normal break-in shavings. I will change it close to 60K miles from now on and follow your other tips. Thanks, brother!

Another reason to keep your cooling system in good shape is that some transmission coolers are built into the radiator, if the radiator gets too hot it can crack, and if this happens to the passage with the transmission cooler the coolant will get blown into the transmission creating a strawberry milk shake that will dissolve the clutches in your transmission.
