Doing Real Science (and Breakdancing) In Zero Gravity

Support the channel by visiting www.curiositystream.com/medlife and use the code 'medlife' for a year of CuriosityStream and Nebula - where you'll find 14 and a half extra minutes of footage at the end of this video!
I got to do some real science in weightlessness! A total of 23 whole astro minutes in freefall. This wasn't a tourist flight but a real life science campaign with the European Space Agency and NASA. It really was a dream come true. I've wanted to do a parabolic flight ever since I watched 'The Making of Apollo 13' (the movie not the actual event) as a kid and learnt how they filmed it. I guess this will be the closest I'll get to going into space!
Huge thank you to Neil Melville,
Ruth McAvinia,
Anne-Clotilde Duchesne,
Sébastien Turay,
Karina Marshall-Goebel,
Rosita Suenson, Lars, and all the scientists I met and chatted to on the campaign.
As the channel scales up, I'm really trying to commit to things I've wanted to do but previously told myself I don't have time or money to address. The first on that list is subtitles, which I'm going to do my best to provide for every video if I can. Sometimes they're uploaded a bit last minute/impromptu and I'll endeavour to get them up afterwards, but I'm now working with a company to get subtitles in place before publication if possible. To everyone who uses subtitles - sorry it took so long.

It is actually quite important that the plane be the correct age, otherwise it would need to be modified. Once the plane is modified they would need to either have it marked "EXPERIMENTAL" or apply for a whole new type certification for the modified plane. Neither of those options is particularly good. If the plane is "EXPERIMENTAL", then you can't perform any paid service with it whatsoever (not even for ESA), you can't fly IFR, you can't fly over populated areas, and you have to notify every single passenger every single time you fly that the plane has an experimental certificate. It's a hassle. Applying for a new type would solve these problems, but aviation administrators (understandably!) move at a glacial pace when certifying new types, so it would take way longer than just finding an older plane in good condition. This is all assuming that it works roughly the same in France as in the US, which is not a bad bet, but there may be some subtle differences.

@@tissuepaper9962 That’s not exactly true. Just about every kit aircraft has an experimental cert and they can fly over populated areas just fine. The airworthiness cert will have an exception for flying over dense areas while landing, taking off, while directed by ATC, and when maintaining a high enough altitude. There are very few situations where none of those exceptions apply.

When the plane goes down, it has to go down at the same speed as the people inside are falling without air resistance. I never realized that during the zero-g sections, the plane is actually pointing down. All the cameras are always held in the same orientation as in level flight. But I guess in free fall, there really is no sense of up or down. They probably covered up all the windows to avoid make things even more disorienting and distracting.

Excellent video, as usual. Don’t know if it’s the audio quality or my bad non-native english speaker ear, but it seems you had a slightly different accent while lying on the plane compared to what I was used to hear, sounded a tad more British than usual. 😄 Also, I cried a little when I saw you and other doctors and scientists donning procedure masks with huge gaps and the sporadic nose slips. I hope that when the next airborne virus pandemic comes we will have finally forgotten this pesky droplet dogma in favour of aerosol science. Cheers!

Have not even started but massive props to the bloke that is spinning you at the beginning 😮 that is some serious strength to get you into motion that fast and to then stop you on the spot before the next parabola. I would not have even thought that would be possible with a child without near popping a hip out on the stop in those straps. *Edit, Neil is a bloody legend.

I have to keep pausing these videos and recover from the weird wobbly slightly nauseous feeling I get when watching medical things to do with hearts and veins/blood (That video about exercise with MRI footage of blood flow was difficult). But I watch these because they're just too damn interesting, not to mention amusing 😉.

I came here from the Nebula channel to elevate the KZread algorithm for this vid to a stratospheric heights... Aaanyway... Thanks for including the plane tour with briefings of the sci experiments onborad the flight (on Nebula). Was hoping you would relate the Dzhanibekov Effect to your rigorous excercise programme, but I understand - there was no time for frivolities. On a different note, closer to your field, does a heart experience strain during the changeover from zero G to hyper G - as in your own heart/Philips experiment (is there a back pressure thump, or is the inlet chamber suddenly gulping too much blood - is that a good thing - could it be used as a prescription for narrowing of ventricles (here you go: 3 vomit comets twice a week), etc)?

You young'uns and your break dancing! Well - done! I've never had the nerve, the physiology, or parental permission to break dance! (Well, maybe the physiology...) and no desire as a 20 - something. And every year would bring the law of diminishing returns into play.

What I admire about you above all: Your lack of fear. The lack of not doing some things that interest you because it's scary as heck. The way that man spinned you. Or that he touched you. It seems like you have never questioned it, I don't think I could do that... And, besides, the video is generally super cool, so keep it up👍🏻
