Dogs 101 - POODLE (STANDARD) - Top Dog Facts About the POODLE (STANDARD)
Check out More at BrooklynsCorner.com
The Poodle is a dog known for its proud bearing and stylish appearance, which comes in different varieties based on size. The Standard Poodle is the oldest breed in the group and is of European origin. Its earliest ancestors might have been herding dogs from Central Asia, which evolved into a German water dog variety. These were eventually standardized in France in the 15th century, where they functioned as water retrievers. Apart from being an excellent hunting companion, these versatile dogs have been employed as guard, as guides, in the military, as wagon pullers and found much fame as show dogs as well. They reached the US with the French aristocracy in the 1800s, and have remained a popular pet and show dog.
Time for some Ruff Trivia:
- Which of these is NOT a size-based variety of Poodles generally recognized by Kennel Clubs?
o A: Giant
o B: Miniature
o C: Toy
What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.
The height of the adult Standard Poodle is between 15 and 21 inches, and weight between 45 and 65 pounds. It is a well-proportioned dog, with a curly, harsh and dense single-layered coat. It sometimes appears to be walking on stilettos because of its small feet. The skull is slightly rounded, with ears folded over close to the head. The eyes are dark and oval shaped, with an alert and intelligent expression. Standard colors are black, brown, grey, brindle, sable, red, apricot and white.
Grooming: The Poodle is not a heavy shedder, but the hair it does shed tends to become caught in the surrounding hair. This can cause severe matting if not removed frequently. Coat care for show dogs can take several hours every week, and is best done by a professional. Owners tend to cut the coat of non-show or retired dogs down to low-maintenance length. Brushing of teeth, trimming of nails and cleaning of ears have to be regular.
Temperament: Contrary to the standoffish stereotype that the breed has, the Poodle is actually a very friendly breed that enjoys human company, and should not be left alone for long periods. Among the various Poodle groups, the Standard Poodle is considered the best for families with children, as these dogs are less likely to get physically intimidated.
Training: The Poodle is one of the most intelligent breeds and can be trained easily for obedience, to perform tricks or for different kinds of jobs. It is a fairly active breed, and requires physical and mental challenges to stay happy. Daily walks combined with play sessions are recommended.
Health: The life expectancy of the Standard Poodle is 10 to 13 years. Some common ailments seen in the breed are Addison’s disease, gastric dilatation volvulus, thyroid issues, tracheal collapse, epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis, renal disease, hip dysplasia and cancer. The breed is also very susceptible to ear infections.
Good looks, intelligence, versatility and a friendly nature - there isn’t much that the Poodle can be said to be lacking in. If you can provide the effort it takes to maintain its looks, you will get to know why the Poodle is the favorite of so many dog lovers.
Find out if the Poodle would be a good addition to your home. Now you can visit Brooklyn’s Corner.com to take our quiz and find out which dog would be the best match for you.

I have had dogs since I was fourteen, and I was lucky to have some wonderful dogs, loving and intelligent ones. Now, I am 52, we bought us a standard poodle, he is 4 months old, and I have fallen crazily in love with him. I have never dreamed, there could be a dog not just loving and intelligent, but so funny, so full of life, so present at any time, such a huge personality, almost human. I am amazed every day.

I always wanted a standard but could never afford one...around here they range around $2500. Then I came across a lady who bred daughters and sons of champions. The grandparents of these pups were all OFA and PRA checked clear....she decided to stop breeding due to the work and expense of keeping them...she had 3 males and 3 females. She had only one female pup left....her color is a silver beige. I told her I could afford $600. and since I had clipped dogs for 50 years ( yep, I’m 70) and offered a large fenced in yard, she agreed with a spay contract. In the beginning (I got her at 10 weeks) she was so full of energy, I thought “oh no, what have I done”. My vet had several standards, and he told they don’t mature until they are around 2 years old....he was right! But by 2, she is the sweetest, gentlest, loving companion I could have asked for. If you can handle the first 2 years, they are the most fabulous dog you will ever own.

I agree- I have enjoyed all of my former dogs: Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shep, Golden/Shar-Pei mix; but the Standard Poodle is my favorite all around- smart, sweet, obedient (if you can survive the puppy stage), loves all people/kids/animals- until they don't ...(ie. suspicious stranger- then she goes Cujo...which works for us!)

I had a toy poodle that was the best dog I could possibly imagine. My parents got her bc I wanted a dog and they read that poodles were quiet. She was quiet, but so gentle and sweet -- I don't understand why people just assume all toys are yappy and hyper. My mom got breast cancer right after we got her, and even as a puppy she was right beside her 100% of the time, just watching over her making sure she was okay. She was also wonderful with elderly people -- very gentle and loving to all of them, even if she didn't know them. AND SO SMART! I swear she could understand so much of what we were saying. She knew SO MANY tricks and words, and you could combine them -- even if she'd never heard the combination before -- and she would know what you wanted. What was so funny was that she tried to be protective too! She was great at alerting us whenever someone was outside, but bc she was so tiny she wouldn't go investigate unless you went with her as backup. She was the greatest gift of my life.

@@a.d.c7941 I bought mine , a male parti standard who is 5 months old now , from a breeder in a little unheard of farming town in Illinois. All I can say is look at the parents, both parents were there when we visited. She had all his vet records an a guarantee of good health from her vet. I've had good luck in the past an I'm not worrying now. I take great care of all my animals . I believe a lot of their health issues come from food. Do your research and please consider a raw diet with a grain free dry / wet food mix. I can't begin to tell u all the things I've corrected in my dogs since I became aware of the lies the pet food industry led me to believe. From crusty nose to itching an skin issues to siezures. Yes , my 9 year old Chihuahua had 3 to 4 seizures a year that I thought could be an older age issue....but I put him on a grain free , raw food diet an he has not had 1 seizure in 2 years an he's a completely different dog. Anyway my standard is a complete joy an he is so smart. You will not regret getting one I'm sure !

The Poodles sizes go as follows: Toy under 10 inches at the withers, Miniature 10-16 inches at the shoulder, Standard is Taller than 17 inches at the shoulder. However it is VERY uncommon to find a Standard under 22 inches. Also you do not have to maintain a long, luxurious coat on them. There are at least 15 different acceptable hairstyles for Poodles and also since their hair is so versatile you can even turn them into different breeds (Most common is to make them into Bedlingtons) and also Poodles can rock Asian styles very will since their hair fluffs out nicely and can be sculpted quite easily so you can even make it so your Poodle does not actually LOOK like a Poodle..... I think Poodles need to make a comeback and we need to stop breeding Doodles.

Former dog groomer and animal shelter tech here. I love the different hairstyles and lengths that (I feel) only poodles can pull off. I've only had mini poodles (1 as a child through my teens, another through my 20s) but I really want to own a standard poodle this time around. I absolutely agree with the doodle comment. I think goldens and labs are great breeds on their own, but the whole mixing with poodles for a "hypoallergenic" dog, is just ridiculous. It doesn't always turn out that way, and lots of doodles end up in shelters. Besides, poodles are perfect. There's a reason the breed is one of the oldest.

@@Nil-tz6gy Uhm no. Poodles are actually happy-go-lucky............. I don't know what ones you've met but wellbred Poodles are actually similar in temperament to Labs and Goldens because they are RETRIEVERS. In fact, the are one of the Original Retrievers and are the foundation for many a sporting breed. The Poodle, Labrador AND Golden Retriever clubs all condemn the mixing of these breeds as they are actually ruining the breeds themselves.

They are anything taller than 15 inches. There are a few other facts that are wrong so I recommend looking at the AKC/CKC/and UKC websites.

Such wonderful breed of dog, this video did not do them justice at all. Poodles come in many colors, and sizes, not mentioned here. Would have taken just a few minutes longer to mention that PCA has decided that in the US we can only show 3 varieties (unlike for example in Germany, where Kleins which are basically small Standards, have their own variety) and only solid colors. United Poodle Association is here in the US, and their standard for Poodles allows basically all colors and color patterns except merles (which doesn’t occur naturally in our breed). Ignoring facts like UPA promoting beautiful multi colors like parti colored Poodles sends many puppy buyers straight to the arms of puppy mill doodle breeders, when they could find a beautiful black and white purebred (yes, AKC and UKC register multi colored Poodles) Poodle of any size, and with some easy research they could find one from a breeder who does all health clearances! Poodles are also such multi purpose dogs, excelling in practically every dog sport, as well as in service dog work and therapy dog work. They served in WWII and were awarded medals as war dogs who saved lives! So please don’t think of a poodle as a foo foo dog-they are amazing creatures and there is no need to pay big money for a “doode” when you can buy or adopt a poodle that will give you years of joy!

Yes they do. They shed their hair like we do, it's just different than a dog with an undercoat and fur. In small amounts, and it gets stuck in the curls, which is what causes matts to happen.

Don't let it stop you. They are all possibilities but if you deal with a reputable breeder you'll probably not have to contend with any of them, particularly hip dysplasia as the parents will have been tested and will be clear.

Honestly most of those are going to be listed for ANY pure bred dog, breeding IS inbreeding. Fortunately because their popularity in showing and as working/service dogs, there's many excellent Standard Poodle breeders around the country. Basically you want to look for 3 things: 1. Health testing is the most important. A good breeder will be very up front about the health testing they give their dogs and should freely share that information if asked. 2. Showing their breeding stock. Even if you're not into dog shows (I'm not), a successful show career for the parents is essentially a 3rd party seal of approval that the dog has most likely been carefully bred. 3. A good breeder will take a puppy back and will often contractually require that the dog be returned to them in the event that it cannot be cared for or is no longer wanted. One more thing, don't be turned off by a breeder's janky website and don't be sucked in by a slick one, "the worse the website, the better the breeder" is something I've heard more than once.

I would avoid all the doodles because you never know what you’re going to get. A nicely bred standard poodle is a wonderful dog. My standard is extremely well-behaved, not hyper at all, and has never damaged anything in the house or on my property. He’s fine with being left in the house alone. A lot of it has to do with knowing how to train.
