An argument can be made that this 'breed' is the most evolutionarily robust non-wolf canid in existence. Extremely intelligent, and extremely long-lived (20 year lifespans) despite being a medium-sized canine. They almost never get sick (*at all*), and age astonishingly well. Clearly, something about that isolated New Guinea ecosystem agreed with them. Makes one wonder...

Maybe because, like all wild animals, they weren't bred to serve humans, who in that process disregard completely the damage they could be causing to the animal (Eg: pugs can't fucking breathe)

  • @DavidMGKiza

Reasons why they can’t be kept as pets: 1. They are carnivorous dogs. They won’t eat your pet dog food. 2. They need lots of space to run around, trees to climb, and lots of physical exercise because of their hunting instincts. They can’t be kept inside a home with humans. 3. They are aggressive dogs, who hunt in groups and can takedown much bigger prey, including humans. Their flexibility gives them the advantage to move fast when in a fight with other animals. A little child can be easily killed by these dogs. I come from Papua New Guinea (PNG) where these dogs lived. They are now a rare species but there have been some recent sightings of these dogs up in Mount Wilhelm, the Highest mountain in PNG (4509 meters). Although small, in size, they have been known to take down large pigs, cassowaries, possums, birds and other domestic pet dogs as well. People of PNG have great respects for these dogs and regard them as spirits of the jungle.

Thanks for those points David, but what do you think on any mixed breed benefits Dave, theoretically may be nice to get some of those genetic benefits into a sturdy and smart breed of domestic dog, (off course only if it did not present a risk to the wild singer gene pool, I am wondering in Papua if it does occasionally, be it rarely, knock up the village dogs or vice versa?), the good low maintenance health into old age, excellent joint mobility in old dogs, intelligence and long life stuff in particular (as the incredible bonds of humans with dogs given their short life give so much heart break another 5 or 6 years with any of my dogs would be a blessing they are all such loyal best mates) , but I guess you may always have problems even with a little bit of singer dog in your fido, be it mixed in a kelpie, blue cattle or JR Terrier etc , your chooks, rabbits and galahs are never going to feel safe and that will put your best laying hens off the boil.

I just saw the "singing dog" at the Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, North Carolina, they got it in a month ago. It didn't make a sound and looks like my old dog. You would never know anything unusual about it. I felt bad for it, all alone surrounded by big cats in there sanctuary enclosures. It was unfortunate, the dog was treated very poorly by whomever owned it previously before it was rescued. It is better here than in an abusive environment.

If they are bred as pets, they won't be able to survive in the wild. If something is wild it can learn to live with humans, but it will never be the same as something domesticated. Wolves that have been bred to be pets are still way too much to handle for most people. My point is that these ARE on the level of wolves. They can play with their trainers, but that doesn't mean they're lap dogs. They should be focused on boosting the tiny wild population before trying to make them pets.

There are a few parallels that can be drawn between the singing dog of new guinea and the people of new guinea: Adept at climbing trees, watching both the dog and the people climb trees is equally entertaining. So very agile. Also New Guineans tend to howl when we laugh. Almost in the same way the dogs do. If you have a group of them it all be in unison. Very time. And our heads sometimes seem a bit big for our bodies. I'm half New Guinean, love the people, love the dog breed.

My Indian pariah dogs also have those teeth as well as both having webbed toes and conjoined toe pads. Yes, my dogs were both from India and are 'purebred' which is a bit of a misnomer because as a landrace breed they aren't bred by humans. However, they have been in isolation for so long they are their own breed with a distinctive appearance, though they come in many colors and patterns. Their disposition is different than your average domestic dog. They are more alert and MUCH more intelligent. In many ways, they are also more like having cats. They are extremely independent and want attention only on their terms.

Yes, they can climb trees to a point (depending on branches). If you have ever had one, u know they do "come from a place inside themselves that is overwhelmingly wild in nature and will never be tamed." So, never leave them alone outside and always "keep an eye" on them while outside in public. However, keeping to these rules, no domesticated creature could ever replace a bond with them.

I don't think pet keepers can help the wild population. That's why I think efforts to breed this dog should be focused on keeping the wild population alive, not on molding them for the pet trade. But the focus seems to be on the later. Humans may have nothing to do with the wild population shrinking, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to help it. It also seems that most people buy these dogs for the novelty without really understanding that they aren't like most domestic dogs.

The NGSinging Dog reminds me in several ways of the Japanese Shiba Inu. Shibas are also an old dog - some say as old as 3,000 years. So, there is a possible link there???? Anyway, the Shiba is very independent, super clean, taking care of their own coats; will only come to you when they want to have you pay attention to them - both things very cat-like, which means very Singer-like. Shibas and Singers also look a lot alike - orange thick fur, their ear, shape of the head, longish haired tail, curled over the back. Today’s Shiba is a bit smaller in height than a Singer, and the length of their coat makes the Shiba look heavier. So if you want a Singer have a look at the Shiba!

Wolves are another animal. These dogs appear to me to be less reserved and of course smaller. I didn't say they were lap dogs, this video states that very clearly. What makes you think the pet keepers have some magic dust to help the wild populations? They are totally separate from each other and aren't impacting each other. I have an axolotl, they are numerous in captivity but almost extinct in the wild. We aren't responsible for that.

  • @blackbriar246

I don't have to be fully funding a breeding program for these dogs to have an opinion on how the issue of the wild population should be approached. There aren't many people breeding these dogs, nothing close to how much most other breeds are. I think efforts should be focused on the wild population foremost, since the breed originated in the wild. Obviously we aren't going to agree, so let's leave it at that.

These dogs stemmed from domesticated dogs that later went feril and over time through adaptation evolved into a seperate species. They and Australian Dingoes have much the same root ancesters. From what I've learned from people who keep them they can make good pets, but like many other types of dog, they have certain traits that require the right owner. I think some of the info in this video is wrong. I've seen them interact quite well with other dogs and children and they are shy but not aggressive. Their prey drive is toward small rodents and that type animal. Here's a video of a New Guinea Singing Dog trying to engage a domestic dog in play; kzread.info/dash/bejne/h4mJmdx6Zpe-Ybg.html

I don't think that's possible because dogs were domesticated about 15,000 years ago while new Guinea dogs were separated 30,000 years ago.

You didn't understand me or maybe you don't want to. The keepers of these animals are NOT decreasing efforts to preserve the animals in the wild, they are just captive breeding a cool animals and keeping pets. What are YOU doing to help the New Guinea singing dog? Otherwise you are just being a hypocrite.

You aren't making any sense. You think that just because something is 'wild' it means it can't be pet, regardless of the qualities of the actual animal. That is narrow-minded. If they are bred as pets, there will be plenty spare, and in effect that will save them from extinction. These clearly aren't wolves. Stop being so short-sighted.

no. A lot of races were made by humans just to catch our "awws" and be selled, and that's the reason they have a lot of health issues, like french bulldogs and basset hounds. Some of them can be operated and successfully treated, but prepare your wallet and your bank account...

If you where to take a vote however of Geographers, Geologists, Political Scientists... It would most likely be a Asian Island by a large margin. Pretty much ever map you find ether splits the island 1/2 Asian. (Which is Stupid) Or just has it as Asian. So I'm very sorry to tell you that your are mistaken. But this is one of those things like people thinking North America Only has Three Countries in it... (Hint: North America Starts At Panama and Includes The Islands in the Caribbean)

@@captainseyepatch3879 You are correct that continental boundaries are in some cases arbitrary or not well defined but absolutely no one in academic circles considers New Guinea to be part of Asia in a cultural or geological sense. The genocidal domination of Indonesia in West New Guinea as a result of Dutch colonization that is against the will of the indigenous people does often include the island being improperly included as part of Asia on maps by lazy cartographers. New Guinea shares a continental shelf with Australia and the two have been connected in the past by land when sea levels were lower. Both were part of the ancient landmass Sahul, a break off from Gondwanaland, while what is now Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines were known as Sunda, formerly part of Laurasia. The two have never been connected and have massively different biospheres illustrated by the Weber Line, Lydekker Line, and Wallace Line.

I don't understand why Dogs 101 had an episode with this dog... it's like having an episode for timber wolves. New Guinea Singing dogs are not pets. Apart from the fact there are less than 200 estimated on the planet and there aren't any to spare for pets, they're wild animals for goodness sake. You wouldn't have a NGSD in your house anymore than you would have a Pomeranian in a zoo. Which is the only place you should see a NGSD.
