    the thing about collies being protective of children is very true. my grandparents had one, and when I was baby and I was sleeping, he'd sleep outside my door and get not aggressive but defensive over anyone that tried to come in, also he'd let me sleep on him and he'd protect me while I was sleeping. he did the same for my cousins. and he was also incredibly intelligent

    Lol... no. I love them but they shed a lot. I have 4 of them and If I were to brush them every day I would go mad. A couple of times per month is enough, if your not taking them to an exibition. And one of them really likes the rain( I think she has border collie blood), just imagine all of the mud. Sometimes I dont clean her right away and let the other dogs laugh at her. But she's shameless *sigh*

    I miss my collie, Randy was my best friend growing up. My family had him for 14 years but I knew him for 12 of those years. out of all the pets I have lost, Randy was one of the hardest. Even now nine years later, I still tear up about it. Collies are wonderful dogs, and make amazing friends.

I do not know the full story because I was little then. And Kasey was hit by a car as well! D: We lived on an 80 speed limit and it started right there darn you ole veihcles! I think the only thing I would of changed on this info video, was about the shedding, yes Collies shed but not as bad as people think, at least not when the collie is on a good diet, males shed once a year normally around their birthdays, females twice a year around their heat cycles, they don't shed like other breeds, I have fostered many breeds of dogs including Golden Retrievers, St. Bernards and so on! and the Goldens shed way .. WAY!... way more than a collie does. I think they should info people how they shed, because the general public might like they going to come home one day to find a whole other dog in the amount of coat one might shed, and its not like that with collies Especially if the collie gets a brushing even only once a month!

  • @superchubbles

    @superchubbles

    What's your recommended grooming schedule for a rough collie? I've heard a light brushing a few times a week, plus one long, thorough brushing once a week. How about bathing and groomer visits? Do they need to be trimmed pretty often, in your experience? I'm hoping within the next couple of years I can get a collie. I just adore them!

  • @WildeManorCollies

    @WildeManorCollies

    9 жыл бұрын

    superchubbles I recommend brushing them as puppies although they wont need it for grooming but for learning that brushing is good. I recommend brushing lightly at least once a week, and a full line brushing once a month or twice a month. if your grooming during their shed season then brushing them lightly daily followed by full line brushing once a week. Females shed twice a year and Males once a year. I never trim but that is because I show mine but you can ask a groomer for a trim but that means shaving them down, and I do not recommend that. there long coat actually protects them from the heat and sun because the top layer of outer coat is the one getting hit by the rays of the sun. but the under lining coat it cooler and protects the skin from sunburn. Learning to do line brushing is the best grooming advice I can tell you because that will fully brush them out if done correctly. But I will ad that I take the comb and brush out behind ears and elbows once a week to prevent matting. and I line brush the pants or skirt of a dog twice a month.

    Thank you for replying so quickly! Sounds like their coats are easier to care for than I thought, which is awesome. I've been doing plenty of my own research, but it's great to hear from someone with lots of collie experience. I want to do therapy training with my dog, so I definitely want to start with a puppy and get him used to grooming and all kinds of handling from an early, early age. The grooming was one of my biggest concerns, since I've never had a dog with a higher maintenance coat before. But it is sounding more and more doable. :)

    Agreed. I just had a Collie into the grooming salon I work at, and while he had some matting, he wasn't horrible. Besides, it's coat blow time, so the shedding picks up, and it they're not brushed, it can cause mats. I have a Great Pyrenees, and I find that he's not too big of a shedder, but come coat blow time (ie right now), the house is full of fine, white undercoat hair.

  • @colin6768
    @colin67686 жыл бұрын

    Damn - so many cool dog breeds. Collies, Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds, Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds to me are five of the most beautiful dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs are cool. Then of course you got Bearded Collies, Corgies, Old English Sheepdogs, Westies, Beagles, Dachshunds, Poodles, Basset Hounds, Labs, and Golden Retrievers. Decisions, decisions. At some point in time I want to get a dog or two or three but the most difficult thing for me is picking. I love all dogs (not too keen on Rottweilers, Dobermans - at least with their ears cropped, I like them much better when they're floppy, Chihuahuas, and teacup Yorkies). Our old neighbor had a teacup Yorkie and even though he was cute he was too yappy for my taste. So it's going to be tough choosing. Plus I love cats too. Wish I could own and take care of 50 or more :) Dogs and cats are like cheese puffs - you can't resist them and you just can't have one.

She was a rescue dog, and the previous owners had her vocal cords taken out! ( I'm guessing it was because she used to bark a lot, but still WHY???) She was about 15 when we had to have her put down in June, 2015. :( But all of my family on my dad's side has had collies! I love them! They are the best dog, loyal, gentle, easy to train, smart and beautiful creatures!! My ex babysitter had one of these dogs. Coincidentally he was named Lassie, but her daughters often nicknamed him "Laddie" and "Pipsqueak" because of his barking. He was a fairly well behaved dog and was allowed in the front yard unlike his dalmatian sister. He was also like a grumpy old man at times meaning that if he's sleeping, don't pet him or he'll bite. Unfortunately he had to be euthanized because of diabetes.

    As for other grooming, just a little combing behind the ears every so often to prevent matting and I wash him once a year (in spring because it helps to get rid of the wintercoat faster). Collies are some of the easiest dogs to keep, I really don't get how they come up with this intensive grooming bit. Shorthair breeds may require less grooming, but you spend that time picking those short hairs out of your clothes (short hairs go through, long hairs stick on top and can be more easily removed)

    My collie is a white collie with a tan face and a tan spot right above his tail. His ears were taped down by the breeder, but his sister kept pulling the tape out, so one of his ears is folded down, and the other is pricked. I think it makes him look 10 times cuter!

    I think smooth collies are much better than the rough type. I find them much more appealing :) can't wait for when I move out of home so I can finally get a smooth.

    Now I'm thinking about buying/adopting Collie. I have big yard, forest near by, big open space and there is always someone in house so dog would never be alone for longer than few minutes. I have plenty of time so I would have no problem with grooming one once a day. This may be perfect dog for me :)

    I find it so strange that almost nobody talks about how independent minded this breed is. It may depend on the lines but my female Collie is incredibly stubborn and will use her intelligence to get into trouble often lol. They are good dogs but they don't listen to your every word like a border or retriever.

    Since I was a child, growing up watching Lassie, I had planned to get a Collie when I had a place of my own. But that massive thick under coat has kept me from doing it. The original Lassie did NOT have that much fur. Collies of old, did not have the coat of fur the modern Collies have. I live in TN and our summers are sweltering with heat and humidity. I just think our summers would be brutal for the modern Collie coat. I also live on several acres of land with all kinds of brush to get stuck in that coat. But should I ever come across a Collie like the Collies in the past, I just might get one. For now, I have Australian Shepherds. Which is how I know what dealing with long fluffy coats are like. But my dogs have nothing like the coat of a rough collie. Although my young one comes pretty close.

    I don't mind shedding as long as it is a long coat breed. I grew up with beagles and that hair weaves itself into thing. The long-haired mutt we had always shed it clumps so it was very easy to clean.
