Similar but different, just how it was meant to be. Its a customers choice. Choices is what people want. Nobody is going to choose one of them because it can or not stay within 1/2 second of the other on a track. Looks, ride, style, price. Its all good. Thanks for the vid.

man i'm really feeling that 135, and its a lil more practical

245hp porsche vs 300hp bmw. if they had used the cayman s, which puts out 295 hp (assuming the 2008 model is used here) then there would be no contest.

So.... The Cayman is 6.000£ more than the BMW. The Cayman S is even more expensive...maybe it's faster than the 135i. Invest 7-8k£ into the 135i (to be as expansive as the Cayman S) only for performance and let's see which one is the fastest

think about price for comparability, the BMW in this spec is already £4000 cheaper than the Porsche when new.

135i has gotten amazing reviews, cayman is still pretty cool though. cayman s would be more fun but of course considerably more expensive.

I own a 987.2 Cayman it is the best car I’ve ever driven in medium and high speed corners. Testing it on orange cones in the parking lot and a drift test is a joke. The low center of gravity with the mid-engine flat6 is amazing at 140 mph in big sweeping corners. The grip, feel, control and low curb weight make it an amazing car. Drive one if you get a chance. (I’ve owned 3 BMW’s and a 911 and the Cayman is the most pure sports car experience when it comes to agility, balance and handeling.)

So much of this has to do with driver ability. I've never driven a 135, but I did just test drive a Cayman this afternoon and I've got to say, that's a badass car, regardless of whichever wins on this UK show...

yeah it very well might be but I think in order for that to be possible the cayman would have to be slightly redesigned and changed a little, when you look a 911 turbo the front grill is better for intake there are side intakes, better wing, and it has a wide rear end for better control, so if porsche reworked those factors into the cayman then maybe it would be faster.

Dude tiff is from the original top gear. This is more an intelligent show while top gear is an entertainment based show.

And the fact of the matter is, park both cars on the street, and the Cayman is the one that get's looked at. It's good looking from any angle.

@TheCarVlogger That would be a race. But I think Porsche is really selling its badge here - for the same price tag, 1 series beats it everytime. I mean, the 1M Coupe (340hp)costs as much as the Cayman (245hp) here in Portugal (73.000€). Ridiculous.

I am biased but I drove both and I love the BMW. I can even drive it all winter in New England. Try that in the Cayman. Both are nice though

both are great modern cars but i would personally take the cayman

the old cayman with no diff, a tall ratio 5 speed box and a 2.7 simply isnt powerful enough to beat the beemer! the new 2.9 with a better six speed gearbox, an lsd and more power would be a good comparison. both great cars!

Fifth Gear is actually a pretty old show with more than 10 seasons. It was supposed to give straight on facts while Top Gear is more about entertainment. This is their own show.

I'm not saying the Bimmer's slow...but the cayman guy said it, "it's not gonna be a fast lap time, but it was fun", If they had one consistent race driver qualifying both cars...i don't know if it would've turned out like this. Good fun though. There's a 335i that runs around town here...he's really quick. Only a tune and cone filters. Runs low 12's. Pretty ridiculous for what it is (leather clad GPS grocery getter)

Note: not the Cayman S. Granted, that one is quite a bit more expensive. In USA I think you can get only the S model, though.

@blinstrub They are comparing the 135i to the Cayman, with the BMW costing $10,000 less than the Cayman. You want to compare it to the Porsche Cayman R? Maybe grab a 1 series M coupe or just get a 335i, tune it and do the standard bolt ons, and in either of those situations, walk away knowing you have a car as fast or almost as fast as the Porsche, while having the ability to put a couple people in the back seat and saving money in the process. I drive a Porsche though, so no saying I'm biased!

maybe but the 911 turbo and Gt2 have blistering 0-60's and top speed's Im not saying it isnt possible but I doubt that a fully engineered cayman is going to get from 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds anytime soon which is what the new turbo is capable of

A BMW beating a Porsche. What is this world coming too. Indeed. Perhaps the Porsche needed a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, a warm up lap and then it would nail the corners. Personally I lose the backend on mine in corners all the time but only because I nail it to the wall. A BMW will NOT stand up to race track abuse all day and then service as a grocery getter all week. A Porsche will hammer nails at the track all day and then drive you home. As a car collector I speak from experience.

Easy, TTS is just epic looking, Caymen looks pretty good, don't understand why people think it's ugly, but I think it's epic too. Though as I said earlier, 2009 TTS is amazing. I think the 911 series are ugly, but that's me.

I think if Porsche wasn't worried about the Cayman eating into the 911 Carrera market the Cayman would have been a nicer car and could have easily smoked the 135i. It's a shame how they sort of held it back.

You can get the Cayman in 2.9 and 3.4 flavors. Those would be $13,000 and $16,000 more than the 135. Im sure the results would be different if they chose to run either of the above engines. Then again the large difference in price. The 135 is just to boxy for me. I will continue to drive my E46.

@nomainreason The Porsche may be a bit 'overpriced' but at least it doesn't have turbos and its intercoolers to maintain. Also, it seems to be more of a driver's car since it has more confidence around the corners but BMW does better in the straights.

the 135i really is a quick car. Its just a shame that it looks like its preggers

I don't like the BMW 1-series but anything with a backseat and a usable trunk gets my vote out of hand.

I'd like to see the 370Z in this comparison. Still, I'm surprised the Porsche was slower. . . But of course, BMW's are always nice. :)

ever heard of the m1, or the z8? those were legendary supercars built by bmw, and continue to be worshipped by gearheads today. also bmw is gonna make a 911 and r8 competitor called the i8 soon

I would have loved to see them switch cars later because the guy in the BMW 135i wasnt all that great, I know he ended up winning and all but Tiff is just an amazing driver he could have really ruined the Porsche on aspect of the testing.
