This is the only video where I’ve seen the owners 100% on board with the training, allowing themselves to understand their mistakes to learn beyond them, and taking full focus and action toward training. They’re not very experienced with dogs but they definitely are willing to learn, and that’s the kind of behavior that should be expected from a dog lover. The desire and patience to learn about dog behavior and how to correct bad ones.

Yeah I liked how Jeff really took it on board and regretted the way he previously tried to train Sylvester. It's not a personal attack when somebody tells you that was the wrong way to train a dog but some owners take it that way. I wish a lot of dog owners realise that dog training is not necessarily a one size fit all kind of gig.

When I got my dog he had been abused and on the streets in the past, and he had all of these behaviours but worse. The most important thing has been that he trusts us. Nowadays he is still a bit spooked by the harness but he is okay as long as someone other than the one putting the harness on stands with him and pets him (we say that's his emotional support human). He can keep moving around bikes and cars where he would freeze up before.

I used this "do not pull on leash technique" on a puppy I trained in 3 days flat back when the show was still airing. (Wasn't my dog...). Started out scared of walks and then started to love them, but had a perfect heel every time. It does work, but it's honestly easier with younger dogs than older ones.

@@lathafalls7675 Training is more effective since the dog will be focused on you and eager to learn. Using the techniques, the dog was engaged with me as much as with the walk, which also meant better communication overall. For example at a part of the walk, the dog would look up at me as a signal to ask permission to run with me and would stay in perfect step as we ran for that short bit. It has other advantages than "perfect heel".

Small dogs actually do tend to be more aggressive. Of course, it really comes down to the individual, but it’s tied back to an instinct thing. He's just a nervous dog, scared of novelty, and everything outside is novel therefore scary. He may not have been exposed to many new items or environments as a puppy. My dog was like this as a pup, more aggressive when scared though, it took AGES for her to build confidence and get used to everything (she used to raise hackles and bark at traffic cones, plants, bin bags, paper blowing in the wind, strangers, balloons, scooters, skateboards, wheelchairs.... and way more). Shes now 7 and she's just getting over her fear of strangers. Shes still occasionally wary if a stranger approaches us from behind or if someone is very noisy, but she no longer freaks out at every person we pass on the street. Shes also no longer so scared of new objects, she'll sometimes growl a bit under her breath but will go and slowly check out a new object instead of freaking out and staying away from it.

@@khirsah666 same. No idea what my dog's past is, but she's always been very cautious about objects in people's hands, especially poles. It's gotten a lot better over time, and I've done exactly what you've done too with the 'touch'. I'll also put the object on the ground and do it that way first if necessary. Also doing the same thing Victoria did with the leash helped: pick up object-> treat. Raise object-> treat. Move object->treat. With some objects (not all) she'll let me pet her with them too. Just keep working on it, and your dog with slowly trust again.

I want to take a minute to reiterate what Victoria said at the end about how the circling back training for Sylvester's pulling problem Is "tedious but if you stick with it , then you have many many years of wonderful walks with a dog that doesn't pull." Boom. That is the key to all dog training and even child rearing. ( think about Super Nanny teaching parents how to get parents to teach their children to go to bed and stay in bed ) It is repetitive but it works with consistency and then you get to just enjoy the fruits of your labor forever. :)

We got a 5 year old rescue dog (Lab/ Staffie cross) from Dogs Trust (UK) 13 years ago. He was found wandering the streets and was very thin. He was very nervous when we brought him home and let him settle and get used to everything, but he has never wanted to go for a walk. He is so terrified that we can’t even get him through the gate. He shakes so badly he can’t move and it was so stressful for him and us that we gave up after 4 tries. He was always very active in the garden and house, chasing balls and enjoying himself. He is now 18 and has really slowed down to the point he won’t play with toys any more or run round the garden and eats very little. He had been very ill, having a seizure just after Christmas, and has gone downhill since then so we are enjoying every minute we have left with him as he has been a gorgeous dog and amazing addition to our family. It will be devastating when he leaves us.

Touch command definitely works on fearful dogs. My dog used freak about anything in humans hand (he crash to a door because my mom was holding eggs in her hand) stick, chairs, bottles etc. He still scares if it's a stranger or a male holding an object. For example when my brother (even tho my dog loves him and he's his favorite play partner) holds couple of glass bottles, he gets scared and goes back, my brother crouches and hold bottles and say touch. He gives a good sniff and he is fine with it. We can carry sticks or chairs without scaring him.
